  • ONE STEP BEHIND THE SERAPHIM by Daniel Sandu producer: EAVE graduate & Romanian National Coordinator Ada Solomon is in post-production. The film is inspired by Sandu’s own experiences during the five years he spent in an Orthodox high school meant to prepare youngsters for the Theology Faculty, and then priesthood. The story is told through the eyes of Gabriel, a 15-year-old boy who wants to become a priest and is admitted to the specialised high school. He befriends three colleagues, but their connection with an older, difficult student, Olah, will bring them to the attention of Father Ivan, a priest willing to expel all those who do not observe the ultra-strict rules of the establishment. The film was shot in September 2015, February 2016 and May 2016 in Bucharest and the city of Focsani.

  • EAVE project RADIOGRAM by Rouzie Hassanova, producer: EAVE graduate Gergana Stankova is in post-production. The story is set at the beginning of the 1970s in Bulgaria, when the communist regime considered Western music a national threat. In a small village in the Rhodope Mountains, the only source of information and joy is Ali’s radio, but the device is destroyed in a fight. Ali will then decide to travel 100 kilometres to buy a new radio for his rock’n’roll-obsessed son Ahmet and the other villagers. The story is inspired by events in the life of Hassanova’s grandfather and father. A major part of the story centres on the fact that Ali and his friends are Muslims: Radiogram will also explore how the religious minority was treated in Bulgaria during communism. “People were united against the regime and found hope in music and in each other. It is this banned music that inspired my father's generation to seek their freedom in the late 1980s”, says the director. The project still needs to secure a final part of its budget in order to complete post-production. “The biggest challenge is the licensing of the rock’n’roll music, which is so difficult to achieve with such limited financial resources,” Stankova says. Produced by Menclips Ltd and Filmocrajca, the film was supported by the National Film Center in Bulgaria and the Turkish Ministry of Culture.

TALL IDEA PRAGUE 2016

New festival Vertifilms will present films in previously damned "vertical" format

August 10, 2016 - First festival of vertical films - Vertifilms will be held at the National Gallery in Prague this November. Along with screenings of international films shot in portrait format, the winning works of the competition TALL IDEA PRAGUE 2016 will be presented. Creators can enter their vertical films starting on September 1.

On Thursday, November 3, in the Convent of St Agnes of Bohemia will be presented films in format, which was previously condemned, but now is currently gaining more and more supporters. "Vertifilms Festival, the first of its kind in our country, aims to highlight the uniqueness of the vertical image. It is format, in which portraits been historically painted, and which is bringing a completely different perspective of the film image. We are pleased to cooperate on this project with Moving Image Department, which has been running for more than a year as a part of the National Gallery in Prague in the Trade Fair Palace. This connection is a proof of the uniqueness and aesthetics of video format that was previously viewed more as a mistake, " says festival director Krystof Safer.

Vertical films will be screened at the imposing canvas nearly ten meters high in the premises of the church of St. Salvator. "Vertifilms is a great supplement of exhibition series Moving Image Department by which the National Gallery in Prague in 2015 expanded its dramaturgy to showcase contemporary creators in new media. Vertifilms is part of the 5th chapter and we are glad that we can give a project based on the polarity of the phenomenon of classic film and completely novel form," says Adam Budak, the Chief Curator of the National Gallery in Prague.

From September 1 to October 28 can creators of contemporary vertical films in enter the competition TALL IDEA PRAGUE 2016. Anyone from around the world can participate by sending his film format 9:16 in length from 1-10 minutes. Festival closing ceremony will be on the same day, November 3, preceded by conference on the phenomenon of vertical video.

Two day event now completely free to attend for industry

FOCUS is set to take place on the 6th and 7th December at the Business Design Centre in London. Following the inaugural event last year which saw over 180 exhibiting organisations from 44 countries, the event will now be completely free to attend for members of the production industry.

Developed in consultation with leading industry bodies, including Advertising Producers Association, BFI, British Film Commission, PACT, Production Guild, Production Managers Association, UKIE, WFTV and UK Screen, two days of content strands will include panel discussions, presentations and  workshops. Informative and thought-provoking sessions will cover film, TV, advertising and interactive entertainment, designed to help the production community maximise screen value for all content types and budgets.

At FOCUS delegates will be able to meet with international film commissions, studios, locations and production services. It’s an opportunity to get up to speed on the latest film incentives from around the world and network with peers at the FOCUS Lounge Bar and festive parties.

Registration is now open at www.tlgfocus.com
