Guria, a poor region in western Georgia, in the 1990s: The Gurians, for whom progress has not yet arrived after the collapse of the Soviet Union, struggle for their daily survival with great passion and inexhaustible resourcefulness. Zuriko, a 45-year-old hazelnut farmer, has debts but no wife. His best friend Gela keeps trying to set him up, but so far no woman has satisfied his mother-in-law's demands. So Zuriko decides to take matters into his own hands. His son Achi also has a woman problem. The teenager is hopelessly in love with Eka, but she also has his eye on Beso. While father and son are busy with their women's affairs, life in Guria goes on as usual and the inhabitants try to get by with little clever tricks, humour and singing. The film is produced by Olena Yershova through Georgia’s Kino Iberica in co-production with Pascal Traechslin through Cineworx Filmproduktion (Switzerland). The project was supported by the Georgian National Film Center and the Georgian Chanting Foundation, the Hubert Bals Fund, the Zurich Film Fund and the Swiss National Film Fund. Filming is scheduled to start in the spring of 2023.

The fictional feature is based on Mitevska’s four-part TV series Teresa and I, produced by Sisters and Brother Mitevski production and co-produced by the public service TV broadcaster Macedonian Radio Television. BIRTHDAY GIRL by Michael Noer is shooting

  • THE GOVERNESS by Joe Talbot, producers: EAVE graduates Ed Guiney and Angus Lamont is shooting. The US firm A24 is joining forces with the UK’s BBC Film for an adaptation of French author Anne Serre’s novel The Governess. The New York Times described the novella as “prim and racy, seriously weird and seriously excellent; a John Waters sex farce told with the tact and formality of a classic French fairy tale”. It tells the story of three governesses employed to look after four sons on an estate. It soon becomes apparent that the ladies have not been employed for their ability to sing lullabies. The governesses spark the imaginations of the boys in their care (and many others) and excite the bohemian couple who employ them, and then the ladies try their best to forget about domestic chores by having erotic adventures. The film will star two-time César-nominated actress Lily-Rose Depp, alongside two actresses who have shot to international fame in the past year: the SAG-awarded South Korean star HoYeon Jung and Norway’s Renate Reinsve. The film was developed with the support of BBC Film, which is co-financing the movie adaptation, penned by director Talbot alongside novelist Olivia Gatwood, together with A24. It will be Talbot’s second movie. Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe will produce for Ireland’s Element Pictures, with Rob Richert, of Talbot’s Longshot Features, and Angus Lamont.

  • GEFILTE FISH by Andrei Cohn, co-producer: EAVE graduate Dan Wechsler is shooting. The film, loosely based on the novella An Easter Torch by one of the most important Romanian writers I.L. Caragiale (1852-1912), is set at the beginning of the 20th century and questions the inverted mechanism of anti-Semitism. Leiba Zibal runs an isolated inn together with his wife and son, living alongside the peasants from the neighbouring village in an atmosphere of “hostile tolerance,” as the politicians of the time described the relationship between the Romanian population and the Jewish community. After Leiba throws out his lazy employee Gheorghe, during the Passion Week, thereby leaving him “without food to put on the table for Easter,” Gheorghe is menacing to come back on the night of the Resurrection. The film will be produced by Anca Puiu through Romania’s Mandragora in co-production with French Shellac films and Swiss Bord Cadre. GEFILTE FISH will be shot entirely on location at the Oltina lake, in the Constanta county (southeast from Bucharest) in April-May 2022.

  • BIRTHDAY GIRL by Michael Noer, co-producer: EAVE graduate Esko Rips is shooting. The film is being shot at Tallinn harbour, on Tallink ferries on the shore and at sea, in Tallink Spa & Conference hotel, as well as in Black Box Studio in Viimsi, over the course of 24 shooting days. The reasons why the film will be fully shot in Estonia are: “The main events of the story unfurl on a cruise ferry. We were looking for a location that would allow us to shoot the whole film in one place, and where we could find a trustworthy local partner. In Tallinn, we can use the ferries that are docked in harbour due to the pandemic, still waiting to return to their duty”, says the producer. Producers of BIRTHDAY GIRL are Rene Ezra and Matilda Appelin from Denmark’s Nordisk Film Production in co-production with Andreas Kask and EAVE graduate Esko Rips through Nafta Films.

THE HAPPIEST MAN IN THE WORLD is in post-production

  • THE HAPPIEST MAN IN THE WORLD by Teona Strugar Mitevska, producers: EAVE graduate and Macedonian National Coordinator Labina Mitevska, EAVE+ graduate Danijel Hocevar, EAVE graduates Benoît Roland, National Coordinator Bosnia Herzegovina Amra Baksic Camo, EAVE graduates Maria Møller Christoffersen, Sébastien Delloye is in post-production. The film tells the story of Asja, a 40-year-old single woman living in Sarajevo, who meets Zoran, a 43-year-old banker, at a dating event. Zoran is not there looking for love though, but for forgiveness. During the war in 1993 he was shooting at the city from the opposite side, and he wants to meet his first victim. Now, they both have to relive the pain in their search for forgiveness. The film poses many existential questions: How to live with war? Is there life after war? Is there love after war? And when does war stop? Labina Mitevska of Sisters and Brother Mitevski (North Macedonia) is producing in co-production with Vertigo (Slovenia), Terminal 3 (Croatia), Entre Chien et Loup (Belgium), SCCA/Pro.ba (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Beofilm (Denmark). The development and production have been supported by the Creative Europe - MEDIA Programme, Eurimages, the North Macedonia Film Agency, the Danish Film Institute, the Belgium Tax Shelter, the Croatian Audiovisual Centre and Film Fund Sarajevo.

The rich programme of the plenary sessions for the TTB workshop is prepared in collaboration with FOCUS ASIA. It features a co-production case study of PLAN 75, which will premiere in Un Certain Regard in Cannes this year. The film is produced by TTB graduates Eiko-Mizuno Gray and Jason Gray (Loaded Films, JP), in co-production with TTB graduate Alemberg Ang (Daluyong Studios, PH) and Urban Factory (FR). Urban Distribution International handles sales. The case study will be moderated by Christophe Bruncher (TTB Head of Studies).

Another session will focus on Asian film distribution: post-pandemic, pre-what?, featuring speakers such as Todd Brown (XYZ Film, US), Silvia Simonutti (Wild Bunch, FR), Michael Werner (HK), and CAO LiuYing (Paralax Film, CN), moderated by Patrick Frater. The TTB participants and Focus Asia industry guests will also get an overview of the current European distribution landscape in a panel with Svend Jensen (Arthouse, DK), Christine Eloy (Europa Distribution), Eve Gabereau (Modern Films, UK) and Sabine Hofmann (Polyfilm Verleih, AT), moderated by Patrick Breski.

Furthermore, the TTB participants will have the opportunity to receive feedback on the marketing and distribution potential of their projects from top-notch Asian and European distributors such as Vincent Quek (Anticipate Pictures, SG), Kana Koido (The Klockworks, JP), Pamela Lingyan Bai (Beijing Hugoeast Media, CN), Alba Fouché (Eurozoom, FR) and TTB graduates Stephan Holl (Rapid Eye Movies, DE), Samantha Faccio (Tucker Film, IT) and Fernanda Renno (Fidalgo Film Distribution, NO).

The workshop will also provide further insight into private equity. TTB group leader Bianca Balbuena (Epicmedia Productions, PH) will share her expertise on how to work with equity investors. Individual meetings with TTB experts will be organised on topics such as Asian films and festivals with Roger Garcia (HK) and sales opportunities with Agathe Valentin (FR). TTB’s script consultants Clare Downs (UK) and Nayeem Mahbub (SE) will focus on developing their scripts.

All participants will have individual meetings with key industry professionals of Focus Asia, to foster new collaborations between European and Asian professionals. These meetings will take place onsite and online on the specifically designed platform of Focus Asia. EAVE Interview: BLACK MIC MAC - expanding African storytellers’ audiences

Nicola Ofoego, British-Irish-Nigerian participant of EAVE Producers Workshop 2022, studied economics at university and began trading bonds in investment banking. While navigating the world of finance and sales, she studied at NYU Tisch Film School in her spare time, continued her education at evening classes in London, then self-trained in Paris by immersing herself in French cinema culture, and finally left banking to find her way into the audiovisual industry, her true passion.

A week at the American Film Market with the Kinology team as an intern was a major breakthrough: she met many buyers and, with her proactive approach, made acquaintances that later led to job opportunities and to a broad industry experience in France.

At Mondex et Cie., she worked as a production assistant then associate producer on art documentaries, while also working as an acquisition agent for TMG Concorde where she identified and negotiated acquisitions of primarily French feature films. She also worked for Pathé International in their sales group.

After Concorde was bought out, she started working for MAREMAKO, identifying potential remake sources both in and outside of France, as well as for the acquisitions team at France TV Distribution, who have distributed films such as BETWEEN TWO WORLDS by Emmanuel Carrère (Cannes Directors’ Fortnight 2021), A RADIANT GIRL (Cannes Critics’ Week, 2021) and the TV show CALL MY AGENT.

Nicola recently launched her own production company OKU-TINE and is working with Pape Boye (former head of French sales company Versatile), on a new Paris based venture called Black Mic Mac, which finances and packages African film and TV content. Black Mic Mac is part of the Logical Pictures Group.

“We want to work with producers working in this region, to help them bring their projects to light, and we want to expand their audience, especially the European audience.”

The first film they have taken on board is HALO DAZE, a film by South African filmmaker Sibs Shongwe La Mer. His feature debut NECKTIE YOUTH (producer: EAVE graduate Elias Ribeiro) premiered at the Berlinale Panorama and won "Best South African Feature Film" and "Best Director" at the Durban International Film Festival in 2015.

The original focus was on “entertaining” African stories from Africa, but it will likely expand to include the African diaspora, including the Caribbean and filmmakers of African descent in Europe.

What does entertaining mean in this context? “We are not here to reinforce stories about war and sad African people, and we do not want to engage in stereotypes that have been consumed by Europe or the West in the past to reinforce a certain image of Africa. Of course, we all like movies and arthouse films, there’s going to be despair and horror and terror and drama… but we just want the films to be empowering whether it is for the filmmaker or for the people in the story.”

“I’d love to have a conversation with any producer or filmmaker who has some form of track record or interest in the region, who understands what we are trying to do, who thinks we have something in common that we can talk about.”

Nicola has been selected to EAVE Producers Workshop 2022 as a participant focusing on career development.

“I spend my time on a lot of different things, and I wanted the opportunity to better understand the production process, how to take the lead on projects, and really start working on projects that I am most personally interested in. On a personal level, I was struggling to manage my time, and I also wanted to have a larger network of like-minded film professionals in Europe."

Her production company named OKU-TINE, actually means “fire fire”: “oku” in Igbo (her father’s language), and “tine” in Irish Gaelic (her mother’s language) are both words for fire.

One of the most advanced projects in the slate is an eco-thriller from Trinidad by filmmaker Lauren Marsden, to be shot early next year with Mental Telepathy Pictures. An art documentary called WHY MUSIC by Mexican filmmakers Aarón Fernández and Jesús Muñoz is in development. Their previous film A PHILOSOPHER IN THE ARENA was very successful a couple of years ago: it was nominated Best Documentary at five film festivals including Buenos Aires, Monterrey, Guadalajara and Montréal.

“I think I’ll always have the acquisition angle because that’s what I have been involved with and what I enjoy. But for production, it's also important that I recognise early on the projects that I think have potential, and I want to be the one to take them forward. Rather than coming in at the end and saying «here is some money, go and do your thing».”

The 12th edition of EAVE+ takes place from April 9-14, 2022 at Hotel Mama Shelter in Luxembourg. The workshop will gather 14 experienced producers from 11 countries and 7 seasoned industry professionals to discuss the structure of their companies, best management practices and new business models

Thanks to our partnership with CineLink, Vasilis Chrysanthopoulos (plays2place productions, Greece) and Danijel Pek (Antitalent, Croatia) have been selected from two previous editions of CineLink to participate with a special scholarship.

Transforming Companies, new business models and company constellations, which we will explore via a series of inspiring company case studies by Jonas Katzenstein (augenschein Filmproduktion, DE), Petri Kemppinen (Aurora Studios, FI) and Carole Scotta (Haut et Court, FR).

“I ran my company on a small scale, but participation on EAVE+ workshop offered me some new ideas and tools how to empower and structure my future business model and network.”

Jozko Rutar, Spok Films, Slovenia, EAVE+ 2021

Top-notch business and management coaches and industry professionals will tackle the business requirements of running a sustainable film company.

EAVE Finance Consultant Linda Beath (Ideal Filmworks, IT) and Marc Bordure (FR), General and Financial CFO of the French production company AGAT FILMS & Cie / Ex Nihilo, will explore the topic of how to develop an efficient slate of projects. Marc Bordure will also tackle questions related to company finance, and Linda Beath will dig deeper into the topics of company formats, platforms today and company development policies.

Management coach Michael Comyn (Fearless Organization, IE) will work with the producers in individual meetings on team leadership and management skills.

EAVE+ Head of Studies Jani Thiltges (Samsa Film, LU), will lead group discussions following each plenary session and analyse the individual company cases of the selected participants.

Additionally, participants will be able to go into more detail into the topics which are most urgent and most important to them and to their particular companies, during one-to-one meetings with the EAVE+ pedagogical team and with each other.

EAVE+ takes place once a year in Luxembourg with different experts and curates the most urgent, contemporary topics for each session according to industry needs.

EAVE+ is supported by the Creative Europe - MEDIA sub-programme of the European Union and the Luxembourg Film Fund.

GREEN FILM LAB - call for the second workshop in Palma de Mallorca

Green Film Lab, the programme wishing to invest in training European cinema professionals on green practices promoted by TorinoFilmLab - laboratory of the National Museum of Cinema - and its partner GREEN FILM - a Trentino Film Commission’s project, in collaboration with EAVE, is ready to receive applications for the second workshop of 2022, that will take place in Palma de Mallorca (Spain) between 29th and 31st July, thanks to the collaboration of Mallorca Film Commission, Fundació Mallorca Turisme and Consell Insular de Mallorca.

Green Film Lab targets

  • European production teams developing a fiction or documentary feature film - at an advanced stage of development - who are willing to make their shooting more sustainable
  • film production professionals eager to hone their skills on how to work on environmentally friendly audiovisual productions
  • green managers (professionals working in the field of environmental management, even if not linked to audiovisual context) interested in learning how to apply their expertise to film sets.

The applications to participate can be submitted until 3rd June, here.

GREEN FILM LAB aims at a more sustainable audiovisual industry and it is truly committed to changing mindset and habits regarding environmental issues in the field.

Each workshop is open to 24 participants selected to work in groups under the guidance of green manager tutors with wide experience in film industry, on feature film projects almost ready to begin filming.

Through a practical, project-based and hands-on approach, the participants will learn how to apply the current best practices in terms of energy saving, transport, accommodation, catering, set decoration, waste management, recycling and communication.

The training is based on the Green Film Rating System and its two main features: the sustainability plan and the certification process for audiovisual projects.

Overall, the programme includes a number of intensive 3-day workshops that will be held along the year in different European countries and regions, in collaboration with various film institutions and funds, proposing the same contents and structure. Green Film Lab will propose one last workshop on 14th-16th October in Sitges (Spain), in collaboration with Government of Catalonia, Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies, Catalunya Film Commission and Servei de Desenvolupament Empresarial. Applications open on 15th June.

Green Film Lab Head of Studies is the Italian producer and TFL alumnus Giovanni Pompili that will work with Louise Marie Smith (UK), founder and managing director of Neptune Environmental Solutions and with Morgane Baudin (France), producer, consultant and trainer on sustainability for film & TV.

Green Film Lab is a programme of TorinoFilmLab and Green Film, promoted by the National Museum of Cinema and Trentino Film Commission, in collaboration with EAVE. Supported by Creative Europe – MEDIA Programme.
