MILK TEETH by Mihai Mincan is in production

In production

  • MILK TEETH by Mihai Mincan, producers: EAVE, PUENTES and TTB graduate Radu Stancu, EAVE graduates Monica Hellström and Konstantinos Vassilaros is in production. The story: As the last person to see her sister before she disappears, Maria (8) finds herself trapped in a world of deceit. Consumed by the loss, she takes it upon herself to find out what really happened, navigating through a universe of muted confusion, in the twilight of the Communist era. As Maria starts feeling that she is getting closer to uncovering the truth, a strange world opens up, threatening to take control of her. The only way to fight against it is to rely on her friends and imagination. MILK TEETH serves as a powerful allegory of Romania’s transition from the Communist era to the hope of a new society after 1989. By representing darkness and void as visual symbolic elements, the film portrays the uncertainty and fear experienced during this period. Maria’s quest for truth mirrors the nation’s desire for justice and accountability. She represents the generation that seeks empowerment, and change becomes vital in a time and place that finally show glimpses of prospects of a free world (producer Radu Stancu). Radu Stancu is producing with Ioana Lascar through Romania’s deFilm in co-production with Cyriac Auriol through France’s Remora Films, Monica Hellström through Danish Strom Pictures, Konstantinos Vassilaros through Greece’s StudioBauhaus and Pavlina Angelova through Bulgaria’s Screening Emotions. The co-production is backed by the Romanian Film Centre, the Romanian Office for Film and Cultural Investments (OFIC), the Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée (France), the Danish Film Institute, the Bulgarian National Film Center, the Greek Film Centre, Media Investment Communication (Romania), ARTE Kino, Avanpost (Romania), Creative Europe MEDIA, ERT Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation, Cinema City (Romania), the Society of Authors, Composers and Publishers of Music (SACEM) and Agence Nationale de Gestion des Œuvres Audiovisuelles (ANGOA). The project was developed at the Torino Film Lab – Feature Lab 2023 programme, where it received the grand TFL Production Award and the Green Filming Award. The shooting is currently taking place in Romania, at Bucharest, Lupeni and Vulcan (Hunedoara county).

  • FRONTERA by Judith Colell, co-producer: EAVE graduate Katleen Goossens is in production. Filming of the historical thriller telling of the adventures of a group of people who, despite the threats to their existence, put their lives at risk and flout the rules imposed upon them in order help Jews escaping from Nazi repression, is taking place over six weeks in the region of Pallars and on location around Barcelona. The plot unfolds in 1943, after General Franco has blocked the route for Jews fleeing over the Pyrenees to escape Nazi repression. At the customs office in a border town, Manel Grau, a civil servant with a Republican past, decides to disobey orders, helped by Juliana, a local resident, and Jerôme, a French people smuggler. They all join forces and begin a crusade to help as many Jews to flee as they possibly can. But then, Manel will be trapped in a dangerous odyssey that will revive within him – and within his wife, Mercé – old ghosts of the still-recent Spanish Civil War. “Today, more than ever, there are millions of people who are forced to flee war, hunger and the brutality being caused by their leaders. On the other side, there are always people who help, people who condemn those who run away, and people who turn a blind eye as if nothing were happening to them – people who put themselves at risk and people who don’t,” explains the director. “I believe that film is a weapon for raising awareness and for condemnation. And, as a fast-paced, action-packed film, FRONTERA is also exactly that.” FRONTERA is a production by Coming Soon Films (Spain), Diagonal TV (Banijay Iberia) and Bulletproof Cupid (Belgium). It has secured support from the ICEC, ICAA, Screen Flanders (a VLAIO initiative in conjunction with the Flanders Audiovisual Fund) and the Belgian Federal Government’s Tax Shelter, as well as BNP Paribas Fortis Film Finance and the MEDIA programme. It also boasts the involvement of RTVE and 3Cat.

Being the daughter of a woman incapable of loving her child has deprived her of the ability to experience authentic and loving relationships, not only with others but also with herself. When she meets a terminally ill patient and his loving wife, she encounters a love that fundamentally changes her life. Marko Škop penned the script together with Zuzana Liová, and he is also the producer of the film through Slovak Artileria. Alice Tabery of Czech Cinepoint is the other producer of the film, while the Slovak Radio and Television is co-producing. The Slovak Audiovisual Fund, the Czech Film Fund and the Slovak Radio and Television are supporting the project. Filming takes place on locations in Bratislava and the surrounding areas.

The second and final session of PUENTES, EAVE’s European-Latin American co-production workshop, starts today, on November 26th  in Montevideo (Uruguay) and will run until December 2nd!

The carefully curated group of Latin American and European participants will come together once again to develop their projects, enhance their careers and company structures, think globally, and forge strong professional connections between Europe and Latin America, all under the guidance of the experienced PUENTES experts.

Experts and programme

The core tutors include Head of Studies Fernanda del Nido (Setembro Cine, AR/ES), Script Consultant Jacques Akchoti (FR), LATAM Consultant, Workshop partner and expert Agustina Chiarino (Bocacha Films, UY) and Group Leader Sophie Erbs (Gaijin, FR).

Nico Avruj (Campo Cine, AR) and Bárbara Francisco (Pasto, AR) will join us as guest experts, sharing their invaluable insights on Latin-American–European co-productions and collaborating with platforms during plenary sessions.

In addition to plenaries, group work sessions, and individual meetings with the experts, the second week of PUENTES will feature a special group session on company planning, titled 'Building a Sustainable Business', led by Group Leader Sophie Erbs.

PUENTES URUGUAY for local professionals

As every year, a special local workshop for Uruguayan producers will take place alongside the international PUENTES program from November 26-29. Local participants and the international group will share plenary sessions and networking events, including 'My Country at a Glance EU,' where our European producers will provide an overview of the financial aspects to consider when co-producing in their respective countries.

Interview with EAVE Marketing Workshop Heads of Studies Alya Belgaroui-Degalet and Sarah Calderón

Alya and Sarah, you are the Heads of Studies of the EAVE Marketing Workshop for the 8th edition this year. Do you remember the first edition and your expectations and feelings about starting this work?

Alya Belgaroui-Degalet: I remember exactly how Tina (EAVE CEO Kristina Trapp) came to me with this big and ambitious project. I was nervous about being up to the task, but working with Sarah made everything easier. Her great efficiency and shared vision reassured me about designing the workshop, and thanks to her and Tina, I felt surrounded by supportive, empowering women, warm and welcoming people who push you to your best.

I have to say that after 8 years it's still a lot of fun. We initially drew from our various marketing experiences, following a film’s journey from production to release. We follow a film from the point of view of international sales and distribution, we prepare for the world premiere with PR and journalists. We also talk about national distribution, and at the end of the sessions we always try to think outside the box, make a suggestion for the next step, for the future. The workshop adapts every year; the first sessions stay the same, but the last ones evolve with new ideas, reflecting marketing’s constant changes.

We work closely with long-standing tutors, like Boris Pugnet and Michael Arnon, and more recent ones that joined us along the way like Manori Ravindran, Elena Neira, Guillaume Boscher and Elie Nebot. The presentations also reflect what we have done in previous years and they are in constant motion because we exchange a lot of information and case studies throughout the year. Many of us work together in other capacities and this allows us to be in constant contact.

Sarah Calderón: I can only mirror Alya’s words. Although at the beginning it seemed like a huge task, being with Alya and backed up by Tina, we all felt the vibe of an incredible team right away. We were very quickly surrounded by an amazing collective of mentors that mix charisma and the highest standards in marketing. Our priority is to keep both at the same level. As co-heads of studies, we really complement each other’s knowledge and skills and we have the same vision about many aspects. When we don’t, we get to easily convince the other one and for the best.

Both Alya and me had children in between this workshop and being co-heads of studies allowed us to assure the good work and support each other in our personal lives. Because of our tandem, we’ve been able to also develop our careers very steadily in parallel to our EAVE tasks.

Did the pool of participants change over the years?

Alya Belgaroui-Degalet: Yes, in the early years the workshop was more producer orientated because EAVE is so famous for the EAVE Producers Workshop. Now there's still a large proportion of applications from producers, but it’s more balanced and we try to create a balance in the selection as well, because the idea of the workshop is to create a network where the atmosphere is non competitive, where we are happy to meet a big variety of professionals because we can learn from them. So now we have a good balance of producers, distributors, sales agents, professionals working with platforms, funders and representatives from festivals and markets, from many different countries. This mix adds value to our discussions and plenary sessions, representing all areas of marketing.

With Sarah, we have developed this idea even further: At each plenary session, we ask 1-2 participants to take the stage to speak for 15 minutes about their work and achievements. The "EAVE idea" is that we are not in a teacher-student relationship, but that we all have our experiences to share. To balance different profiles, while most participants are around 30, we also welcome younger talents with 2-4 years of experience. Having varied perspectives is enriching, especially in marketing, where image evolves rapidly. A mix of newer participants, often more connected to social media, and experienced participants with more stories creates a dynamic, impactful workshop. The goal is not to debate each country's audience in detail, but to share as many ideas as possible and be honest about which work well and which don’t - drawing from our own mistakes. Learning from mistakes can often be more valuable than from success stories!

Some national funds have told us they changed their funding systems to better support marketing after our workshop. For example, Eurimages came to the workshop last year because they were working on a new funding system with a focus on marketing, and we exchanged a lot with them about what could be helpful for the film. We realised that the new EUR 50,000 support scheme implemented ideas and structures from our workshop.

Sarah Calderón: In the last years we’ve been able to put an important focus on inclusion when it comes to the selection. Many regions in the world don’t have a developed audiovisual marketing trade and their films struggle to break through the noise of the international marketing, so the workshop is crucial for them. Through tactics like the EAVE scholarships and affirmative action, we often welcome BIPOC participants coming from all over the world including South Africa, Nigeria, Brazil and Colombia, for example. The ethnical and cultural background enrich the selection and the perspectives towards audience thinking.

Are some projects being successful after the workshop?

Alya Belgaroui-Degalet: THE SETTLERS and LIVING LARGE have been successful Marketing Workshop projects recently: LIVING LARGE won a main award in Annecy and was nominated twice for the European Film Awards 2024, while THE SETTLERS received the FIPRESCI prize at Cannes 2023. HOUSEKEEPING FOR BEGINNERS won the Queer Lion in Venice, the Silver Q-Hugo at Chicago, and was nominated for the European University Film Award in 2023, THE ORDINARIES was nominated for the LOLA Awards 2023 and for the Crystal Globe at Karlovy Vary in 2022. TOTEM won Best Children’s Film at Cinekid and scooped the Grand Prize at the NYICFF in 2022.

In terms of projects, we try to pick a mix of projects in development and post production, both independent small projects and larger projects, so we can work deeper or differently depending on the film. This year we have selected 2 documentaries, one per group, and we have even selected TV series, so we are also diversifying in terms of format. We're not just looking at film marketing, but also platform marketing, because that’s a very different market: people watch films on their mobile phones or other devices.

Sarah Calderón: Some years ago, we also had LAMB, represented by New Europe Film Sales, which became a very important film in the arthouse-genre space, it was in Cannes and received the Prize of Originality of Un Certain Regard, it also won at the 2021 European Film Awards, won Best Film at the 2022 Edda Awards, and was sold everywhere.

Through our alliance with Europa International, we train several sales agents to work hand-on-hand with producers. We have had The Match Factory, True Colours, Charades, Autlook Film Sales, mk2, Goodfellas, Films Boutique, Intramovies, Heretic, LevelK, and more.

We are now looking to intensify and scout projects in postproduction stage and in the series space. We need more advanced projects to work with more certainty and clear images in certain sessions. Marketing in development stage is crucial but sometimes it can get a bit vague and we want to be crystal clear about the use of marketing tools across all stages. We are currently looking into possible institutional partnerships to boost the participation of postproduction stage and series.

What do you find relevant for producers and for marketing professionals to learn, to focus on in order to be successful in today’s film business?

Alya Belgaroui-Degalet: How you differentiate yourself from others, how your film is special – that’s what you should emphasise in order to do good marketing. You should also create an audience, a fan base or followers as quickly as possible who will follow the project from the beginning and be there when it is released. Those are my two most important pieces of advice. Always think differently and don’t be afraid to not use the same tools for different marketing efforts. Don’t be afraid to say: let’s talk about this film in a different way.

Sarah Calderón: For us is all about a strategic structure along the production phases and giving importance to the marketing narrative and the images. What we try to show along the week is how your project can grow from the simplest concepts to implementing sophisticated tools in digital promotion, like AI and VOD marketing. These new things will never work if the basis is cracking. Alya, Michael, Manori and myself work in areas like international positioning, early audience identification, PR to get the basis very clear. Participants end up realising how important it is to start early and they leave the workshop with a very clear structure of what they need to do at every step.

Another important part of our job as heads of studies is opening to new mindsets. For example, Elena Neira, specialist in VOD marketing, does a wonderful job making us dive into the mindset of the streamers and making us shape contents for them. She also uses Think Data reports, developed by The Film Agency, to open up ways to use data and gain capacity of negotiation and empowerment. Through EAVE’s investment, participants get a free subscription of six months to Think Data reports allowing them to discover the competitive advantage of working with data analysis and shading a light into the VOD numbers.

How do you tackle AI at the workshop? Do you personally use AI in your daily job?

Alya Belgaroui-Degalet: We introduced a plenary and a group work session on AI at the Marketing Workshop. AI is scary for many people because it is a new tool that we need to understand. It takes some time to get used to it, but that was also the case when the mobile phone or the internet came along. Once you understand it, it’s not that complicated. We aim to explore how AI tools can be useful in daily life or marketing. I often use ChatGPT to correct English in important emails and brainstorm new ideas, like a film title, as a final step to add fresh perspectives to my own work, to help me think differently. When working on a film, we use AI to create initial poster concepts based on keywords, helping producers visualize the mood, though it won’t replace designers or photographers.

At mk2, we are focused on the future of AI in cinema. We even introduced an AI experience room in the theatre where visitors can explore new tools for 10 minutes before a film. An mk2 team member keeps us updated on the latest AI tools, which is a great resource. He, Elie Nebot is working now with us at the EAVE Marketing Workshop opening our minds and eyes to the fascinating opportunities AI can bring to film and audiovisual marketing.

Sarah Calderón: Yes, we are actually implementing AI as the most recent adoption giving participants an overview of the opportunities, but also showing them a critical approach. We invite them to be early adopters while remaining very critical in many ways and to define their red lines according to the emerging legislations and good practices. We also make them aware of the impact on the environments and in politics and try to promote a responsible use always in synch with humans. This year we used mainly ChatGPT and Midjourney at the working sessions and participants worked on their own teaser posters, stills, thumbnails, titles, loglines and briefings for designers / photographers. They felt much more confident with the tools and discovered the usages in a very positive way.

We create synergies with other workshops like the EAVE AI Skills Booster and the EAVE Producers Workshop where we can exchange with other experts like Espinar Gabriel, Creative Director of The Film Agency and Petri Kemppinen, tech consultant. In this way we can stay fresh and informed about the developments of AI.

AI in Film Marketing at EAVE Producers Workshop - Insights of an Exploration

We are happy to share with you The Film Agency's blog post by Eduardo Carneiro that summarizes key takeaways from the EAVE Producers Workshop in Karlskrona, Sweden, in October 2024,

The session entitled "The Use of AI in Marketing Tools" by TFA Creative Director Espinar Gabriel highlighted how Artificial Intelligence can enhance creativity, streamline marketing processes, and offer new tools for film professionals, while still respecting the human touch, and addressing the ethical concerns surrounding its adoption.

EAVE also tackles AI at the annual EAVE Marketing Workshop taking place right now in Luxembourg. A plenary session "Artificial Intelligence Opportunities in Marketing" and a group work session "Artificial Intelligence Tools" by Elie Nebot (MK2 Films, FR) will expand on the topic in detail. In December 2024, EAVE will present its first online AI SKILLS BOOSTER workshop dedicated to film professionals interested in delving into AI, headed by Petri Kemppinen (Good Hand Production, FI).

One of the central themes of the presentation at the Producers Workshop was the emphasis on AI as a tool to augment human creativity rather than replace it. Studios have already integrated AI technologies for over a decade, allowing filmmakers and marketers to work more efficiently. However, there is still resistance in the independent film sector, which could widen the gap between major studios and smaller production houses.

The Art of Prompting for film and Series AI Marketing

Before talking about the tools, it’s important to highlight the effectiveness of them as a critical skill for filmmakers and marketers. Espinar Gabriel explained that successful AI applications require clear and specific instructions. Whether it is generating a visual concept or summarizing a script, users need to collaborate with AI by providing detailed context and iterating on outputs.

Here’s a clear and easy-to-follow structure to help improve your prompts and avoid brief or vague instructions:

  • Act as if you were [Role]
  • [Verb] [What] [Why]
  • [Topics to cover]
  • [Format]
  • [Style]
  • [Tone]
  • [Audience]
  • [Context]
  • [Other considerations]
  • Ask me any questions you deem necessary so you can provide the best possible response

This skill, termed "the art of prompting", is expected to become one of the most valuable assets for film professionals moving forward!

Essential Tools: Text-to-Text, Text-to-Image, and Text-to-Video

Several AI tools were described during the workshop, with practical examples demonstrating their relevance to film marketing. The tools are categorized as follows:

  1. Text-to-Text Tools (Early-Stage Strategy and Planning):

AI models such as ChatGPT, Copilot, and Gemini are particularly useful for speeding up time-consuming tasks such as benchmarking, writing (Loglines and Synopsis), identifying selling arguments, generating creative ideas for digital campaigns, and many others.

  1. Text-to-Image Tools (Pre-Sales Images):

Tools like DALL·E, Firefly, and MidJourney can help develop early-stage visual concepts such as poster designs, mood boards, teaser images, script covers, and many others pre-sale materials. These are vital for marketing and sales efforts, giving filmmakers the ability to create visually appealing marketing content even before the film is shot.

  1. Text-to-Video Tools (Pre-Sales Videos):

Emerging AI technologies like Runway and LTX Studio enable filmmakers to generate dynamic videos from stills or create sizzle reels, providing a cost-effective way to produce marketing materials such as trailers and promotional content in early stages of the project development.

AI for Script Analysis and Audience Insights (Script Stage or Acquisitions)

Largo.ai, a tool that the TFA team frequently uses, was presented as a prime example of AI for script analysis and market forecasting. By analyzing script pages, Largo.ai offers insights into emotions, genres, and audience potential, helping producers make data-driven decisions. The tool also allows marketers to benchmark their projects against comparable films and predict audience behavior, offering valuable strategic guidance in the pre-production phase. TFA has been utilizing this tool for several years, and rather than replacing their roles or diminishing the client base, it has proven to be a valuable asset. Its insights have enriched our analyses, providing an additional dataset that complements and enhances human expertise.

AI First Steps about Ethics in film and series AI marketing

The workshop highlighted the growing relevance of AI in film marketing and distribution. From script analysis to visual content creation, AI tools offer unprecedented opportunities for filmmakers and marketers to innovate at every stage of a project.

However, these technologies must be adopted responsibly, with a focus on ethical considerations such as transparency and bias prevention. As a company policy, TFA discloses transparently to clients when they’ve used any AI tool with their projects and campaigns.

Moreover, TFA encourages industry professionals to work within established guidelines, such as the EU Directive and Hollywood Guilds agreements, to ensure responsible AI application.

Those who embrace AI's potential while safeguarding creative integrity will lead the future of film marketing, making it more dynamic and efficient.

EAVE session in Thessaloniki: The Human Factor

AGORA Talk: The Human Factor

In partnership with the European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs

on TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 15.00 - 16.30 at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival

In the world of European film production we often talk about our environment as a “people’s industry”. We discuss the necessity of maintaining good working relations with one another, especially since the co-production model is the prevalent way of making films happen. There is one type of relationship that lies at the very core of any producer’s work, and it is the one between the producer and the director. This panel will examine the importance of the human factor that runs through this key professional relationship, the power relations that exist at its core, its intricacies, boundaries and potential.

Speakers:

  • EAVE graduate Amanda Livanou, Producer/Founder - Neda Film
  • EAVE graduate Vanya Rainova, Producer - Portokal
  • EAVE graduate and Romanian National Coordinator Ada Solomon, Producer - Hi Film Productions
  • Moderator: EAVE graduate Konstantinos Kontovrakis, Producer
