EAVE interview & masterclass with producer Ed Guiney
Ed Guiney, Element Pictures, producer of Yorgos Lanthimos’ THE FAVOURITE and Lenny Abrahamson’s ROOM on the production of the TV series NORMAL PEOPLE, based on the acclaimed novel by Sally Rooney and directed by Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie Macdonald.
- You are known as very successful producer of rather unusual films for the big screen. Why did you want to adapt Sally Rooney’s novel for TV?
Because its an incredible novel and I thought it would make a brilliant TV series – very simple really!
- The protagonists in ROOM and FRANK are everything but „normal people“. So why did you say that Lenny Abrahamson and Sally Rooney’s novel were „meant for each other“?
As a writer Sally writes characters with such clarity and depth that they cease to be characters in a novel and become living breathing people who you believe exist in your orbit. Lenny has a similar gift as a film-maker. He can remove the lens between the audience and the characters on screen and in such a way that you feel that they cease to be fictional characters but become real people with whom you believe you have an intimate connection.
- What makes the novel interesting for you?
As above, its incredible honesty and its ability to create such rich characters with whom one empathises so deeply.
- Why did you choose to produce 12 episodes of half an hour length instead of six one-hour episodes?
It’s a character centric piece rather than a plot driven piece so we felt this would work best in shorter 30 min episodes or chapters. It felt like there would be too much pressure on plot if we made them hour long episodes.
- Does your approach to the work as a producer for a TV series differ from your work as film producer?
Not really to be honest – its all about supporting the work of outstanding creators who have something unique to say.

Olmo Omerzu was in the midst of shooting his latest feature-length film when it was interrupted by the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. The film crew returned to the set to shoot the remaining ten days’ worth of material, wrapping on 14 June. The story follows the ageing patriarch and owner of a family company, an electronics factory, who sacrificed his whole life for the firm. He finds out that his long-time accountant stole huge sums of money, and she became a victim of an online scam. This situation has a severe impact on the protagonist, his whole family and the future of the company. The film is being produced by Jiri Konecny of endorfilm, and co-produced by Slovakian outfit Punkchart Film, Slovenia’s Cvinger Film, France's Melocoton Films and Czech Television. Several events and misadventures help Ducu decide on how he wants to move on. The film's budget is coming from the Romanian National Film Center. Call for EAVE producers: Join the European VoD meetings in Venice!
Dear EAVE Producers,
The European VoD Meetings is the first European professional training especially conceived for the Video on Demand sector, organised by EuroVoD and co-funded by the Creative Europe MEDIA Programme.
The next workshop will take place from 1 - 4 September 2020 in Italy, Venice (San Servolo Island) in partnership with the Venice Film Festival & the Venice Production Bridge, through the organisation of the VoD Market Day.
The goal of the training is to reinforce the competitiveness of the European VoD platforms, preserving the richness of the cultural diversity of their catalogue, through the transmission of know-how and peer-to-peer learning, by fostering the implementation of innovative projects, producing an updated and comprehensive analysis of the needs of the sector and its opportunities, and stimulating a better comprehension of the dynamics that could influence the circulation of European, arthouse and independent films in Europe as elsewhere.
The training open to 40 executives and intermediate professionals working in digital distribution is born from the urgency of the European VoD platforms to network and benchmark, fostering the dialogue within the chain of rights and with the service providers, feeding a knowledge economy for the benefit of all the industry and finally to the european creativity. Video on Demand is a young sector the industry based on innovation and gathering different knowledges and backgrounds in tech & film that need a constant up to date: transparency, communication, data analysis, cooperation, confrontation about the hot topics of the business, development of new projects, acquisition of technical, artistic, marketing, trading and management tools.
Thanks to a special partnership between EuroVoD and EAVE, you can benefit of 200€ rebate on the EuroVoD training fee which is 1050€ including accommodation and full board.
Please note that participants from European countries at low audiovisual production capacity may also benefit from a MEDIA scholarship.
The applications for the EuroVoD meetings training are now open, until June 30th, 2020.
To submit your application and for more information visit https://www.eurovod.org/european-vod-meetings or you can contact Silvia Cibien: scibien@eurovod.org.

Co-production in a post-pandemic world
The sanitary crisis has shaken up the independent cinema industry. Whereas the wish to return to ‘business as usual’ is strong in all players, our societies have transformed and we have to define the parameters for a ‘new future normal’.
What are the opportunities coming out of the crisis? How can independent producers find new ways of collaborating on an international level? How can we support diversity in cinema? How can training programmes change and adapt the proven, collective know-how of an industry which does not know structured innovation, research and development? And how can film markets support the transformation of the industry?
Leading independent producers from Russia and Europe will explore pathways for a possible future of independent (co-)production in a panel discussion moderated by Erwin M. Schmidt.
Speakers: Didar Domehri (Maneki Films - FULL HOUSE), Natalia Drozd (CTB Film Company, Titus Kreyenberg (unafilm), Riina Sildos (Amrion), Artem Vassiliev (Metrafilms)
