SØRFOND - NORWEGIAN SOUTH FILM FUND
- ACCESS project MADNESS AND HONEY DAYS by Ahmed Yassin Al-Darraji, producer: ACCESS graduate Maytham Jbara was supported with 500 000 NOK. The Jury stated:
“There is something rotten in the state of Denmark” is the key line in Shakespeare's Hamlet. Applied to Iraq under President Saddam Hussein, one truly can say the same. When the protagonist and theatre actor in Madness and Honey Days accidentally offend the tyrant in public, certain death or detention in a psychiatric ward as insane are the only options. The jury is impressed by the creative script, depicting a protagonist who completely dives into the role of Hamlet in a psychiatric ward to stay alive. It gives a surprising, and at times both hilarious and bleak, perspective on how to survive under a regime where all missteps are punished with no mercy. The script moves between the morbid and the laughable, and gives an inventive take on where the madness actually is confined in a society governed by a brutal dictatorship. To use a cultural icon like Shakespeare in this plot gives the film a universal dimension, while the Iraqi director uses his artistic capabilities in an impressive way to scrutinise the history of his home country.

EAVE announces new Heads of Studies for the prestigious EAVE PRODUCERS WORKSHOP
EAVE, European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs, is proud to announce that Tamara Dawit and Jennifer Sabbah-Immagine are joining as the new co-Heads of Studies of the well-known EAVE Producers Workshop, starting from the new 2027 cycle.
They take over from Oscar-nominated producer Lise Lense‑Møller, whose nearly three decades as Group Leader and eight years as Head of Studies have been instrumental in shaping the programme into one of Europe’s leading training initiatives for producers and industry professionals.
A New Chapter for a Landmark Programme
This leadership transition comes at a moment of continued success for EAVE.
"I am incredibly grateful to Lise for the many years of her invaluable contribution in shaping and developing the EAVE Producers Workshop. Working with Lise has been a daily source of inspiration for me. I am thrilled to welcome Jennifer and Tamara in their new roles - both are not strangers to EAVE and have also been contributing as consultants for several years now.
We will continue our mission of empowering producers also in the future, delivering professional excellence, resilience, and adaptability through high-level 360 training, where professionals can hone their professional and personal skills and competencies while also getting insights into different approaches, solutions, and cutting-edge innovation." – says EAVE CEO Kristina Trapp.
Lise Lense-Møller, who has guided the programme with dedication, intelligence and expertise, reflects on her role and the transition:
“In parallel with producing, EAVE has been a big part of my work life and a source of constant inspiration, professionally and personally. On all levels, EAVE is by far the best 'workplace' and the best team I have ever experienced: brain, heart, professionalism, efficiency, and achievement-wise. Despite an incredible workload with upwards of 37 workshops every year, they are always ready to listen, adapt, and improve, and they always do it with a friendly, no-bullshit, and solution-oriented approach. I simply have never experienced anything close to this anywhere else, and it has been an immense privilege to be part of.
This is also true for the many meetings with talented and dedicated participants and experts, who each bring their unique experience and insight to the table. The profound and generous interpersonal and professional sharing, which has become such a hallmark feature of the EAVE experience, helps people grow and find their voice and place in a challenging industry, which they, in turn, then help shape.
Though sometimes exhausting (as very intense schedules are another EAVE hallmark), it has been deeply gratifying and motivating to be with EAVE for all those years. I, too, have learned a lot, but it is time to hand over the baton. I am very happy that Tamara Dawit and Jennifer Sabbah-Imagine, who are already treasured members of the EAVE family have agreed to take on the Head of Studies role, and I look forward to seeing the impact they will have on the EAVE Producers Workshop. I know they have a lot to offer future participants and the organisation, and I wish that they, just like I have, will find the experience to be a source of endless inspiration.”
Tamara Dawit is an Ethiopian, Eritrean, Ukrainian, and Canadian producer, creative sector policy advisor, and founder of Gobez Media. An EAVE alumna, Tamara Dawit, has served as Head of Studies for EAVE’s ACCESS BIPOC programme in Canada, the Sámi Producers Lab, Inclusive Production Practices On Demand, and EAVE’s Impact Think Tank. Outside of producing, she has held leadership roles at FACTOR and the Canada Media Fund, supporting the development of creative sector policy.
“Joining Jennifer Sabbah-Immagine as co-Head of Studies is both exciting and humbling, particularly following the remarkable leadership of Lise Lense-Møller, whose impact on generations of producers is immeasurable. I look forward to working with the EAVE community to support producers as they navigate a rapidly evolving industry and bring bold, ambitious stories to audiences around the world.”
Jennifer Sabbah-Immagine is the founder of The Copro Agency, a consultancy specialising in structuring international co-productions. She has worked as Line Producer, Head of Development & International, Business Affairs and Producer at Big Sister. An EAVE alumna, she has served as a finance expert for the Producers Workshop, as group leader for EAVE’s CHANGE programme and the Arab Producers Lab and is one of the mentors of Inclusive Production Practices On Demand. She also serves as a consultant and advisor for co-production markets, institutions and production companies.
“Taking on this role with Tamara Dawit and alongside the EAVE Team is both moving and a great honour. As a former graduate in Lise Lense-Møller’s group, it is especially meaningful to contribute to a programme that has long shaped the values, ethics, and practices of our profession, while carrying the responsibility of empowering producers who will define the future of our industry and bring their visions to the world.”
The EAVE Producers Workshop is a year-long, residential training programme that brings together over 50 producers from across Europe and beyond for three intensive one-week workshops each year.
EAVE graduates become part of a unique and active network of more than 3,000 European and international producers that forms one of the pillars of the independent film industry. At the recent Cannes Film Festival, for example, 40 films by EAVE producers were selected, and 15 awards went to the EAVE community, including the Palme d’Or for FJORD (producers Dyveke Bjørkly Graver, Andrea Berentsen Ottmar; co-producers Katrin Pors, Jussi Rantamäki), Best Director for FATHERLAND (producer: Lorenzo Gangarossa), the Jury Prize for THE DREAMED ADVENTURE (producer: Jonas Dornbach) and the Caméra d'Or for BEN’IMANA (producer: Samantha Biffot, co-producer: Ingrid Lill Høgtun).
EAVE's Enduring Mission
Since its founding, EAVE is committed to upskilling producers and providing them with professional tools and competencies as well as insights into cutting-edge innovation. In doing so, EAVE is building a diverse international community of producers, embracing a wide range of nationalities, career stages, company set-ups, and perspectives. The organisation actively supports gender balance, equity and inclusion, and the participation of producers from emerging film industries, in the firm belief that diversity in the room enriches the training experience. EAVE also places producer care and work-life balance at the heart of its values, recognising that sustainable careers are built on wellbeing as much as expertise. In parallel, EAVE is committed to the green transition, encouraging environmentally responsible practices across the audiovisual industry.
The EAVE Producers Workshop is co-funded by the Creative Europe MEDIA sub-programme of the European Union, the Film Fund Luxembourg, and a range of national and international partners.

EAVE Producers Workshop 2027 now open for applications!
EAVE, European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs, is one of the leading training and development providers for producers in Europe, renowned for its EAVE Producers Workshop.
Apply by August 17th to the most prestigious training event for producers!
Who is it for?
EAVE is aimed at producers (fiction, documentary and TV series), who are already working in the film and television industries, and who wish to expand their operation internationally by increasing their knowledge of producing and co-producing in Europe and by building up an international professional network. We also welcome applications from associated branches of the industry – e.g. commissioning, funding, legal and finance, festivals & markets, media administration. Each year 56 participants are selected from most of the EU countries and beyond and take part in three one-week long workshops.
Please check the section “Applicant Profile” for more detailed information.

How does it work?
Half the participants attend the course with projects, and it is an excellent means of development through intense focus on the project with colleagues and experts throughout the year. The other half come to EAVE in order to focus on developing their companies or careers. Most participants attending with a project also bring their writer for the first two weeks, which enables producer and writer teams to benefit together from one-to-one sessions with script experts.
During the first two workshops, participants work within groups led by experienced producers and with several experts on script analysis, development and production financing, legal aspects of co-production, marketing, pitching, packaging and more. In the third workshop, some 50 Future Partners (commissioning editors, national and regional media funds, financiers, sales agents, etc.) join the participants to discuss the projects, companies and careers of the participants, a process which offers unusual access to Europe's Key Industry Players.
EAVE graduates join a unique network of active European and international producers, which forms one of the backbones of the industry. Furthermore, EAVE participants and members benefit from our partnerships with the leading European film festivals and markets, where EAVE facilitates graduate participation.
“The EAVE Producers Workshop allowed me to see and structure my company in a much clearer and more strategic way, moving from a project-by-project management approach to a short, medium and long-term business plan. On a practical level, I also closed a co-production for one of my projects with a colleague from my group.”

Sessions
Positionality & Power in Producing
A self-reflective session exploring how identity, privilege, and social location shape the roles, relationships, and influence of producers and key creatives. Participants will map their own positionality in relation to their project and examine how to apply principles of equitable creative process.
Developing with an Inclusive Lens
This session centers the development phase as a critical site for embedding equity, care, and intentionality into the creative process — ensuring that the project vision and pathway to production are clear, transparent, and inclusive for all producers. Participants will explore how to shape their project vision using care-based development frameworks, including collaborative story design and consent-driven research, to create a roadmap that guides the project from concept to production.
Inclusive Financing & Budgeting
This session introduces inclusive budgeting tools and financing strategies that promote equity across the production lifecycle. Topics include fair compensation, and practical tips for building budgets that reflect shared ownership, transparent practices, and community benefit. The session also addresses how to navigate currency imbalances in international coproductions.
Inclusive Co-Productions
This session explores how to build co-productions that uphold creative equity, financial fairness, and shared IP ownership and revenue participation — particularly when working across regions or countries with differing resources or systemic advantages. Participants will examine strategies for negotiating fair terms, drafting inclusive contracts, and navigating legal frameworks that support respectful collaboration, transparency, and long-term sustainability. Emphasis is placed on building co-productions as equitable partnerships, not just financing arrangements.
Inclusive Production Practices
This session offers practical tips for managing productions across diverse cultural and geographic contexts. It covers inclusive hiring, cross-cultural crew coordination, and ethical casting. Participants will explore safer set protocols, power-sharing approaches, culturally sensitive scheduling and inclusive catering practices. The session also addresses production and post-production workflows that prioritise access, consent, and psychological safety.
Accessibility in Production
Dedicated to creating accessible production environments. Includes planning for physical, sensory, cognitive, and communication accessibility across locations, documents, workflows, and on-set practices.
Equity in Distribution & Audience Engagement
This session explores how to design distribution strategies that center equity, access, and cultural relevance. Participants will examine festival and grassroots pathways, language justice, and co-created rollout plans while addressing how to share distribution rights, territories, and revenue ethically across coproducing partners. Emphasis is placed on avoiding extractive models, engaging communities as partners, and ensuring that marketing, access, and target audiences reflect the values and contributions of all collaborators.

In memoriam: Agustina Chiarino
EAVE mourns the passing of Uruguayan producer and EAVE graduate Agustina Chiarino, beloved member of the EAVE community, long-standing Group Leader and mentor of EAVE PUENTES, and one of the most respected and influential figures in Latin American cinema.
Born in Montevideo in 1977, Agustina dedicated her life to cinema, nurturing talent, building international collaborations, and supporting original voices. Trained in Political Science, Communication Studies, and Creative Documentary, she combined intellectual rigor, creative curiosity, and an extraordinary generosity of spirit throughout her remarkable career.

Agustina was a producer at Control Z Films before co-founding Mutante Cine alongside Fernando Epstein, a company that became a key force in Latin American independent cinema. In 2022, she launched her production company, Bocacha Films, continuing her lifelong commitment to discovering and supporting new stories.
Her filmography reflects both her artistic vision and her dedication to auteur cinema. As producer, she was behind acclaimed films including GIGANTE, EL 5 DE TALLERES and LAS OLAS by Adrián Biniez, HIROSHIMA and 3 by Pablo Stoll, TANTA AGUA by Ana Guevara and Leticia Jorge, and ALELI by Leticia Jorge. As co-producer, she contributed to internationally celebrated works such as BENZINHO, LAS HEREDERAS and MONOS. The films she helped bring to life received recognition at major festivals including Cannes, Berlin, Venice, San Sebastián, Sundance and Toronto.
Beyond her achievements as a producer and co-producer, Agustina was a passionate advocate for Latin American cinema and international cooperation. She spent eight years leading project development and co-production initiatives at Canal 10 in Uruguay and shared her expertise as a lecturer and mentor at institutions across Latin America and beyond. She worked as a tutor and advisor for numerous prestigious programs, including Biennale College, BrLab, BioBioLab and, most notably, EAVE PUENTES.
For many years, Agustina was at the heart of EAVE PUENTES. As Group Leader, mentor and collaborator, she guided countless producers through their professional journeys. Her insight, intelligence and sharp understanding of international co-production were invaluable, but it was her warmth, empathy and genuine care for people that made her truly exceptional. She had a unique ability to create trust, encourage dialogue and help others believe in their projects and themselves.

Agustina’s impact extends far beyond the films she produced and the workshops she led. She helped shape careers, build lasting partnerships and strengthen the bridges between Latin America and the international film community. Her presence lightened up every room she entered, and her generosity and unique energy left a lasting mark on everyone fortunate enough to work alongside her.
The EAVE community mourns the loss of a dear colleague, partner, mentor and friend. Her legacy continues to resonate through the filmmakers she supported, the stories she helped to bring to audiences around the world, and the community she helped to build.
Our thoughts are with her family, friends, collaborators and the many whose lives she touched.
Agustina will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.

Locarno Open Doors Reveals 2026 Selection and New Scholarship by EAVE and FFL
Open Doors, Locarno’s co-production platform and talent development programme for filmmakers from equity-seeking communities and regions where artistic expression is at risk, announces its selection for 2026, a bold and diverse slate of voices from across the African continent.
On Monday, August 10, a jury of industry professionals will award financial and in-kind prizes to selected winning projects. New this year, professional training organisation EAVE, together with the Film Fund Luxembourg, will offer a scholarship for the EAVE Marketing Workshop, worth EUR 4,000.
Now in its second year of a four-edition cycle dedicated to 42 countries in Africa, Open Doors presents its Projects, Producers, and Directors programmes, bringing together a generation of filmmakers whose work spans fiction, documentary, and animation across more than ten countries.
From 5 to 10 August, the programme offers hands-on training, mentoring, and networking, alongside public screenings and events during the Locarno Film Festival and its industry arm Locarno Pro.
Drawn from ten different countries across the continent, this year’s Open Doors Projects showcases an exciting range of six selected first and second features in development: from portraits of music and memory to explorations of womanhood, urban life, and the long shadows of colonialism. From Ghana, Aseye Fiagbe directs and produces Too Much Music, a documentary portrait of Ghanaian keyboard prodigy Kiki Gyan. Mozambique and South Africa come together in Chapa 100, an urban, surrealist love story directed by Ique Langa, whose previous feature O profeta screened in the Tiger Competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam earlier this year, and produced by Creative Producers Indaba graduate Lara Sousa (Kulunga Filmes). Nigerian director Ugochukwu Azuya and producer Olubunmi Ogunsola (ENSEMBLE) present I Live in V.I, a sharp social satire about urban space and gentrification. From Somalia and Djibouti, Mohammed Sheikh and producer Kadir Harbi Hassan (Aleel Films) bring fiction project Accept My Plea For Burial (Baryo Aas Iga Gudoon), which probes the tensions between tradition and justice in a rural community. A Tanzania–Kenya collaboration, The Ones With The Tempered Flowers is an experimental documentary weaving together themes of womanhood and motherhood, directed by Neema Ngelime and produced by Ivy Kiru of AQ Pictures and LBx Africa, who also participated in the 2026 La Fabrique Cinéma programme at the Cannes Film Festival with the project Strong Wind. Rounding out the selection, Ugandan fiction project A Vineyard for A Lobster, directed by Talemwa Pius and produced by Gashumba Emmanuel (Gripmagic Uganda Limited), uses a snow-covered landscape as an allegory for the enduring shadows of colonialism.
The Open Doors Producers programme supports creative producers in building sustainable careers and cross-border networks. This year's six participants come from six different countries. From Burkina Faso, Mamounata Nikiema (Pilumpiku Production) is a veteran of the continent's film industry, knighted at FESPACO 2021 for her contributions to cinema. Natasha Craveiro (Cabo Verde, Korikaxoru Films) produced Omi Nobu, which screened as part of the Open Doors Screenings at Locarno 2025. Adja Mariam Mahre Soro (Ivory Coast) leads Studio Kä, an animation studio she founded in Abidjan. Nigerian producer David Ikeata (Vox Cinematic Films) has worked across borders, co-producing Kazakh-Nigerian fiction film Adam Bol (2024) and currently developing a new project with an Egyptian director. Rua Osman (Sudan, Helomur Picture) brings extensive production experience, with a resumé including festival landmarks You Will Die at Twenty (Venice, 2019) and Goodbye Julia (Cannes, 2023). Rounding out the selection, Tapiwa Chipfupa (Zimbabwe, Ambidextrous Pictures) is an EAVE alumna who has recently launched the international training and mentorship programme Audiovisual Entrepreneurs Laboratory (AVEL).
An overview of all selected Projects, Producers and Directors can be found here.
EAVE graduate Yanis Gaye, Head of Studies at Open Doors: “With this new iteration of Open Doors’ African focus, we’re looking to affirm the richness of storytelling across the continent, with artistic voices and creative entrepreneurs strongly dedicated to meet their audiences at home, within their diasporas and internationally. Our programme is set to allow those synergies– within our cohort; between them and Open Doors alumni from other regions; and through the encounters they will have in Locarno – to take hold through concrete and actionable interactions. African film eco-systems and their practitioners are a chance for the industry, to globally redesign some of the ways we think of our co-production practices, our audience building strategies, and the economics of cinema as whole.”
Zsuzsi Bánkuti, Head of Open Doors: “With this selection, we are reaffirming something we deeply believe in: that the future of cinema depends on who gets to make it, and how. One of my hopes for this edition, and for Open Doors more broadly, is to keep amplifying female voices, both behind the camera and in the producer's chair. Gender parity in our industry isn't just a goal for the screen; it has to be lived in the way we work and who we support. But it goes further than that: what excites me most about this year's selection is how many of these filmmakers understand that cinema is never a solo act. A film is always made by many hands, many minds, many stories. The more we build our industry on that truth - on horizontal collaboration, on genuine equality within our creative communities, on more diversity - the richer and more honest our cinema will be."

Find here a short case study of the film WE THE SURFERS that found its global audience through self-distribution with Claudia.
From surf to screen - a successful marketing strategy
Arthur Bourbon of HAND STUDIO distributed his documentary WE THE SURFERS through Claudia. The marketing strategy was built on community credibility and targeted outreach. Drawing on 20 years in the surf world, he toured the film across 100+ festival screenings (including the Ocean Film Tour), won several awards, and focused his PR efforts on specialised surf media, achieving wide coverage with a limited budget. "We achieved great results because the unique, powerful subject of the film allowed it to stand out within the surf community." - he says.
For the global VOD launch on Claudia, Arthur and two PR professionals (one based in France, and one in the USA) generated a consistent social media presence by releasing content every 3 days and generating viral reels with millions of views from all over the world. His approach demonstrates that for independent filmmakers, a well-executed niche strategy and a strong pre-existing network can be more effective than a large communications budget.
The film was released on Apple, Amazon and Google in TVoD on the following major territories: US, Canada, UK, France, Australia, New Zealand (and rest of world in French and English speaking territories). The investment in Claudia has been fully recouped.
