EAVE project MADAME LUNA in production now

In production

  • EAVE project MADAME LUNA by Daniel Espinosa, producer: EAVE graduate David Herdies is in production. Inspired by true events, the film is a thrilling drama about an Eritrean refugee who is washed ashore in Libya, and with time becomes one of the most notorious human smugglers with deep ties to the Italian Mafia. „MADAME LUNA is a darling for me. Like ‘The Swedish Torpedo,’ this is a film portraying a strong woman and that goes a long way. I’ve been working on it for almost ten years,” said Herdies. Supported by the Swedish Film Institute, the Swedish Arts Grants Committee, and the Eurimages CoProduction Development Award.

  • LA VOCATION by Guérin Van de Vorst and Sophie Muselle, producer: EAVE graduate Benoît Roland is in production. The film is following in the footsteps of a self-willed and idealistic young woman called Alexia, a trainee nurse who arrives at a closed ward of a psychiatric hospital, where she meets head-nurse Joëlle who teaches her all she needs to know about the profession. Alexia finds herself moved by angry Beline, a 20-year-old patient who doesn’t think she should be there. Despite Joëlle’s warnings to keep a distance from patients, Alexia grows close to Beline and fully invests herself in getting her out. The filmmakers’ aim with this project is to question the conditions in which psychiatric patients are admitted, cared for and treated. Desperately overworked care teams often struggle to provide adequate support, prioritising the most urgent cases and finding themselves wrestling with ethical and emotional dilemmas. Psychologist, playwright and director Sophie Muselle has been exploring “madness” for many years now, orchestrating stage shows and writing workshops in league with mental health service-users. When Guérin Van de Vorst came across her work, he sought to devise a fiction film with Muselle, which would tackle these topics. LA VOCATION is produced by Benoît Roland’s Wrong Men, partners include Proximus, VOO & Be TV, RTBF, and Casa Kafka Pictures, with the film also enjoying backing from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation Film and Audiovisual Centre.

THE GREEN BORDER is a co-production between Poland, France, Belgium and the Czech Republic, produced by Marcin Wierzchosławski through Metro Films, Fred Bernstein through Astute Films and Agnieszka Holland, in co-production with Maria Blicharska, Damien McDonald from Blick Productions, Sarka Cimbalova from Marlene Film Production and Diana Elbaum and David Ragonig through Beluga Tree. • ABANDONED by Vytautas Puidokas, co-producer: EAVE graduate Estelle Robin You is in post-production. At a desolate farm in the snowy countryside, a group of troubled men, including recovering addicts and former prisoners, find their last chance of redemption. Led by Žanas, a former addict who turned his life around through nature and Catholicism, the men struggle to overcome their pasts and avoid relapse. Unexpectedly, a 14-year-old boy named Matas joins the farm, seeking solace from his own childhood trauma. As the community bonds over their shared struggles, they discover the power of love and support in healing their wounds. “In Eastern Europe, addiction is a deeply ingrained issue affecting half of all families. Director Vytautas Puidokas embarked on a poignant exploration of this topic in 2021, centering on a religious community functioning as a rehabilitation centre. Our film aims to present a multifaceted portrait of this community, with a particular focus on Matas, a sensitive and vulnerable young boy who stands as its core. Despite the intense dynamics within the group, they have formed a united and supportive family. Through our observational approach to filmmaking, we aim to unveil the entire cycle of addiction. We delve into its formation, its impact on relationships, the transmission of behaviours across generations, and, most importantly, the path to recovery”, producer Ruta Jekentaite said. Jekentaite is producing through Lithuanian UKU FILMS in co-production with Estelle Robin You through the French GRANDE OURSE films and in association with Baltic Productions & Broom films (Lithuania). The Lithuanian Film Centre granted the project for development and production. The production is also supported by the Lithuanian Film Tax Incentive and the Lithuanian National Television, while the international funding comes from GRANDE OURSE films and Arte G.E.I.E.

EAVE MARKETING WORKSHOP 2023 - EXTENDED DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS!

Based on the EAVE methodology, Design Thinking techniques and visual, tangible and playful exercises, this tailor-made hands-on workshop gives a 360° overview of traditional and innovative marketing techniques and Audience-centred strategies. This casual way of learning facilitates network and community building across countries from all over the world.

The workshop helped me to put my daily job into perspective and gave me food for thoughts, good practices for future improvements, developments and experiments. It was also great to connect with people with very different backgrounds in the industry.

    THE PARTNERSHIP BEHIND CHANGE

EAVE is a professional training, project development and networking organization for audiovisual producers. Founded in 1988, our objectives are to provide professional training opportunities and to bring producers from different regions of the world together with the aim of facilitating co-production relationships. We believe that the support of independent voices, creative imagination and culturally driven companies within the global media industries is an urgent necessity in the 21st century. Through our work we aim to contribute towards the creation of strong networks of producers and to encourage the exchange of knowledge and skills which will strengthen independent production across the world.

CPH:DOX, Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival, is one of the biggest documentary film festivals in the world. A festival that continues to develop and expand, presenting a program that ranges from the works of major international directors to new talents, from large-scale theatrical releases to film/video works in the field between cinema and visual art.

IMS, International Media Support, is promoting journalism and documentary film to strengthen the capacity of media to reduce conflict, strengthen democracy and facilitate dialogue. Our work is geared towards helping locally-based public interest media operating in armed conflicts, humanitarian crises and rapid political change, both positive and negative, to provide the public and “civic organizations” with public interest content they can trust and use. We work in more than 40 countries across four continents with a staff of about 150 people.

Submissions Now Open for the 3rd Creative Producers Indaba

Submissions have opened for the third Creative Producers Indaba (CPI), a film producers’ development programme presented by the Realness Institute, in collaboration with EAVE, International Film Festival Rotterdam's IFFR Pro, and the Marrakech International Film Festival's Atlas Workshops.

Strong creative producers play a crucial role in driving the growth of local media markets, and the CPI aims to strengthen and grow the number of capable producers on the African continent. Mehret Mandefro, Director of Development and Partnership at the Realness Institute says, “Creative Producer Indaba is addressing the most important gap in the local African media markets - training producers that can develop and finance local stories for the global and local markets. We are thrilled to be launching the third edition.”

Since its inception in 2021, the CPI has nurtured outstanding film talent and facilitated meaningful collaborations that have empowered participants to identify the right partners for their African projects. There are numerous success stories, and a shining example is the collaboration between three African producers: Bramwel Iro from Kenya, Caroline Kganyago from South Africa, and Zoe Ramushu from South Africa. These talented individuals, who participated in last year's Indaba, are now set to co-develop their projects with Dutch producer Ellen Havenith, whose film Tiger Stripes just won the Grand Prize at Cannes' Critics Week. These collaborations exemplify the power of the CPI in fostering connections that transcend borders and build pathways to production for African projects.

The CPI offers 10 African producers with and without projects and 5 international producers the unique opportunity to augment their leadership and entrepreneurial skills, deepen their producerial capabilities, and build professional networks across Africa and beyond.

2022 alumnus Zoe Ramushu (Zimbabwe/SA) reflects on her experience in the CPI:  “It is a great programme for producers wanting to sharpen their knowledge, build their network and expand their entrepreneurial horizons.”

“The CPI aims to empower creative producers and industry leaders in Africa,” says Kristina Trapp, CEO at EAVE. “EAVE is proud to contribute with our methodology to support the groundbreaking work done by Mehret Mandefro and Elias Ribeiro of the Realness Institute.”

“We are thrilled to once again be part of Indaba,” says Facundo Lema, Talent Manager at IFFR Pro. “The programme  continues to demonstrate the importance of collaboration and fostering a sense of community within the industry, as vital elements in empowering and boosting producers' careers. One of the most remarkable aspects is the creative exchange and the exploration of the countless opportunities that will unfold during the IFFR Pro days.”

The Creative Producers Indaba participants will also attend the Atlas Workshops during the Marrakech International Film Festival in November and attend industry sessions at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in January 2024.

The chosen participants will enjoy the valuable opportunity of receiving mentorship from prominent figures in the industry, including Group Leaders Mehret Mandefro and Diana Elbaum, as well as Story consultant  Mmabatho Kau. Guest speakers such as producers Femi Odugbemi, Katriel Schory, Sata Cissokho, Constanza Arena  and Dayo Ogunyemi, along with IFFR Festival Director Vanja Kaludjercic, will generously share their skills, insights, and guidance.

The CPI welcomes not only film producers but also film professionals who work closely with producers, including funding body representatives, international sales representatives, distributors, broadcasters, and development executives who have a vested interest in the African marketplace,” says Mehret Mandefro  “We are pleased to announce the renewal of our partnership with Projeto Paradiso, which secures one spot for a Brazilian producer. Furthermore, we are thrilled to introduce our new partnerships with the Canada Media Fund, The Austrian Film Institute, and the Swiss organisation Focal.”

Applicants must meet certain criteria, including having produced at least one feature fiction, series, or documentary film, or a minimum of two short films as a lead or co-producer. Film professionals should have a minimum of two years of professional experience.

The deadline for submissions is July 3rd , 2023, at 12:00 Central African Time.

The Realness Institute gratefully acknowledges the support of Institut Français d'Afrique du Sud, the Brazilian foundation Projeto Paradiso, the Austrian Film Institute, The Canada Media Fund, the Austrian Film Institute, The Swiss organisation Focal and The Storyboard Collective, Jeune Creation Francophone and CNC in partnership with European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs (EAVE), International Film Festival Rotterdam Pro (IFFR Pro), and Marrakech International Film Festival (Atlas Workshops).
