  • THE MYTH OF A REAL MAN by Lee Filipovski, producer: EAVE graduate Natasa Damnjanovic is in development. The project is about a Serbian family who hopes to immigrate to Canada. The father must decide between the duty to his homeland and the future of his family, in a pensive recollection of the 1999 bombing of Yugoslavia. As Vasiliye and Katarina Ostrogorsky wait for the response from the Canadian embassy on the status of their visa, their country comes under attack during the 1999. bombing of Yugoslavia. Their twelve-year old son Georgey, who was already grappling with the idea of moving to Canada, now watches his father as he puts on his uniform and answers the call to mobilization to defend a country which he was initially determined to leave. During Vasiliye's absence, the letter from the embassy arrives. As Vasiliye comes back on a day's leave from the military, his wife realizes that his focus has shifted. Instead of taking the chance to escape the country, Vasiliye chooses to return to the army. It will take a heavy air raid on their neighbourhood to make Vasiliye realize the gravity of the situation, and see the consequence of his decision. The project was selected for Montreal New Cinema Festival’s (FNC) international co-production market.

EAVE project THE HERD by Milko Lazarov is shooting

  • EAVE project THE HERD by Milko Lazarov, producer: EAVE graduate Veselka Kiryakova is shooting. As per his previous works, Lazarov has chosen a remote setting for his film, with the villages of Karlukovo and Kamenno Pole - situated in the decaying north-western reaches of Bulgaria - serving as his main locations. Shooting on 35mm film kicked off on the 29th of August in the region of Lukovit city and will continue for 31 days. The story focuses on Ali, his daughter Tarika, and her grandmother Chrysula, who are leading an isolated life in a village hut near the border. Tarika suffers from a rare bone malformation known as "butterfly wings", an abnormality passed down through the maternal line. Despite having lived in the area for a long time, enjoying a peaceful and harmonious relationship with their neighbours, the family have always been seen as strange. And then, out of nowhere, the animals in the village are struck down by disease, the river dries up, and sick boy Nikola dies after befriending Tarika. Driven by xenophobia and superstition, the villagers become increasingly suspicious and decide to deal with this unusual family themselves. Produced by Red Carpet, with 42film (Germany) and Amour Fou Luxembourg (Luxembourg) acting as co-producers, the film is funded by the Bulgarian National Film Center, MDM, ZDF/arte, Film fund Luxembourg and Eurimages.

THE EMPIRE by Bruno Dumont is in postproduction

  • THE EMPIRE by Bruno Dumont, co-producer: EAVE graduate Dorothe Beinemeier is in production. Written by the director, the script is set in a curious sci-fi universe: from the banal daily life of a fisherman’s village on the Opal Coast, emerges the epic parallel life of knights from interplanetary kingdoms. Rival clans are engaged in fierce and bloody battle following the announcement of the birth of Margat, the resurgent Prince, purple and ugly, the Beast of the Endtimes — located here on the Opal Coast, he is the child of a young couple already separated, as is common to life in a working class neighbourhood… Produced by Tessalit Productions, THE EMPIRE is co-produced by Germany’s Red Balloon Film, Italy’s Ascent Film, Belgium’s Novak Prod, and Furyo Films. Pre-bought by Canal+ and Ciné+, the feature film is supported by Pictanovo (Hauts de France region), the small-scale co-production deal between France and Germany, Eurimages, the Italian Cultural Ministre, the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, the Film Fund Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein and the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, the CNC’s support to visual or audio creation with the use of digital technologies, and the Cofinova Sofica.

  • 8 VIEWS OF LAKE BIWA by Marko Raat, co-producers: EAVE graduate and Finnish National Coordinator Mark Lwoff, EAVE graduates Misha Jaari, Dora Nedeczky is currently shooting. The film is a complex magical-realist ensemble tragedy, a blend of Baltic and Japanese culture and imagery. Estonia’s Allfilm handles production duties, partnering with Mark Lwoff and Misha Jaari, of Helsinki-based Bufo. The animated segments will be created in Hungary. “We are shooting it on location on the Estonian-Russian border, among a community of ‘old believers’,” says producer Dora Nedeczky, referring to the religious refugees who fled Russia in the 17th century. Locations include Lake Peipsi, Narva and Tallinn. The film was backed by the Estonian Film Institute, the Cultural Endowment of Estonia, the Tartu Film Fund, the Ida-Viru Film Fund and the Finnish Film Foundation, and is being made in collaboration with Yle. The project was previously presented at the Baltic Event co-production market in 2020 and at the Marché du Film’s Co-Production Day in 2021. New EAVE on Demand kicking off in Tours, France!

EAVE is organizing in partnership with CICLIC, Région Centre-Val de Loire, Région Bretagne and Région Pays de la Loire an EAVE on Demand workshop for producers from the three regions in France.

The objective is to provide insight into international co-productions by exploring how international coproduction funds work and how they can be complementary to the regional funds and CNC as well as what are successful international coproduction strategies for regional producers.

The workshop will consist of sessions giving an overview of German regional funds, international co-production funds, MEDIA slate funding and European co-production markets as well as presentations exploring complementarity of regional and international funds and co-production possibilities with Eastern Europe.

The topics will be further explored through co-production and MEDIA slate case studies, panel discussions with German regional funds and European co-production markets as well as round tables.

The workshop will be held in English.
