HORIA by Ana-Maria Comănescu is shooting

  • LA SALLE DES PAS PERDUS by Thibaut Wohlfahrt and Roda Fawaz, producer: EAVE graduate Jean-Yves Roubin is shooting. The film follows seven stories, seven people in search of identity, seven destinies which overlap in a court of law over the course of one day. It’s a tale set apart by its unity of time and place, and one major artistic constraint: the need to link 20 sequence shots together which will then bring the story to life. LA SALLE DES PAS PERDUS is produced by Cassandre Warnauts and Jean-Yves Roubin on behalf of Frakas Productions. Support comes from the Wallonia Brussels Federation Film and Audiovisual Centre, RTBF, Proximus, VOO, BeTV and Shelter Prod.

  • UNE NUIT by Alex Lutz, producer: EAVE graduate and group leader Didar Domehri, co-producer: EAVE graduate Jacques-Henri Bronckart is shooting. The script begins in a crowded underground train station. Following a jostle, a man and a woman argue, under the amused gaze of the other passengers. Their oratorical joust is loud and charming. A few moments later, in the corridors of a station, the two strangers awkwardly make love in a photo booth. Back on the surface, they are about to separate... Well, goodbye, anyway... We're not going to spend the night saying goodbye! ... But why not? Produced by Didar Domehri for Maneki Films, the film is co-produced by Belgian outfit Versus Production (Jacques-Henri Bronckart). Karin Viard and Alex Lutz are also associate producers. Pre-bought by Canal+, Ciné+ and C8, the feature also benefits from the support of the CNC, Procirep and Angoa, the Belgian Federal Government's Tax Shelter and Inver Tax Shelter, as well as Sofica Cofinova, SG Image and Indéfilms.

  • HORIA by Ana-Maria Comanescu, producer: EAVE graduate and Romanian National Coordinator Ada Solomon is shooting. The screenplay, written by Comănescu, follows the titular Horia, a cautious teenager living in a Romanian village, who is pining for his crush who lives on the other side of the country. After a fight with his father, Horia leaves home on his dad’s motorbike and, soon after, meets street-smart 13-year-old Stela, who is running away from her family. She may be younger than Horia, but she is definitely more adept at living in the moment and adapting to circumstance. And soon, their trip will turn into a full-on adventure that will put their bond to the test. The project is being produced by EAVE participant Carla Fotea and EAVE graduate and Romanian National Coordinator Ada Solomon through microFILM (Romania), and co-produced by Rossitsa Valkanova through Klas Film (Bulgaria) and Nikolina Zecevic-Vucetic through Biberche Productions (Serbia). The Romanian National Film Center as well as the Bulgarian and Serbian National Film Centers supported the project.

EAVE project FIUME O MORTE! is in post-production

  • EAVE project FIUME O MORTE! by Igor Bezinovic, producers: EAVE graduates Tibor Keser and Vanja Jambrovic, co-producer: EAVE graduate Marina Gumzi is in post-production. Named after the protofascist political slogan, Fiume o morte! The docu-fiction hybrid aims to reconstruct the events during Gabriele D’Annunzio’s rule over Fiume (now Rijeka in Croatia), which lasted from 1919-1920. While the historical facts and D’Annunzio’s worldview are widely known and well publicised, Bezinovic’s film concentrates on the contrasts between the strict, corporativist egime and some of the avant-garde, libertine and anarchistic ideas it proclaimed. A Rijeka native, Bezinović wanted to explore and rediscover the lesser-known parts of the city’s history from over a century ago. FIUME O MORTE! Is being produced by EAVE graduates Tibor Keser and Vanja Jambrovic for Restart (Croatia). The co-producers are Erica Berbiani and Lucia Candelpergher for Videomante (Italy) as well as EAVE graduate Marina Gumzi for Nosorogi (Slovenia). The development and production were financially supported by the Croatian Audiovisual Centre, the Slovenian Film Centre, the City of Zagreb, the City of Rijeka, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Film Fund, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Film Commission, Eurimages, Creative Europe – MEDIA Single Project Development, the Italian Ministry of Culture, PROCIREP/ANGOA, RE-ACT and the Sarajevo Film Festival (CineLink Co-production Market). Viba Film Studio provided the technical services.

  • LUNATIC by Igor Sterk, co-producer: EAVE graduate Frenk Celarc is in post-production. The film, written and directed by his son, renowned Slovenian filmmaker Igor Sterk is the first of its kind in the context of national cinema, given that it is a work of autofiction centred around an ordinary Slovenian family led by an extraordinary father. Lunatic (named after Jure Sterk’s boat) is an intimate portrait of Jure and his family, told from the unique, personal and subjective perspective of his son. It is labelled as a humorous, yet relentless, family drama. Lunatic is a demanding production, given that the story spans an extended period, from the early 1970s to the year 2008. The photography process lasted almost ten months, having begun last September, since it features all of the seasons and various locations, and involved a large crew. The main shooting location was the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana, with the coastal towns of Koper, Piran and Pula (in Croatia) serving as other locations. Lunatic is a Slovenian-Croatian co-production between companies A.A.C. Productions, Gustav Film, RTV Slovenia and Croatian company Svenk. Germany’s Mogador Film was involved in the development process. Financial support for the feature came from the Slovenian Film Centre (SFC) and the Croatian Audiovisual Centre (HAVC), while Ljubljana-based studio Viba Film provided technical support.

  • FAULTY BRIDES by Ergo Kuld, producer: EAVE+ graduate Kristian Taska is in post-production. The screenplay is based on a story of the same title by legendary Estonian writer Eduard Vilde, dating back to 1888. 1929 it was previously made into a film in and also into a popular television play in 1989. The story unfolds in the Lääne County at the beginning of the 20th century, where the owner of the Lipuvere farm decides to marry his daughters off to wealthy suitors from the Mulgi County. However, the hearts of the girls already belong to local boys, with whom a plan is forged to get rid of the troublesome grooms. FAULTY BRIDES is produced by Kristian Taska through Taska Film and Tanel Tatter through Apollo Film Productions, and coproduced by Veiko Esken through Kassikuld.

  • ALL MEN BECOME BROTHERS by Robert Kirchhoff, producer: EAVE graduate Jiri Konecny is in post-production. The figure of the Slovak politician Alexander Dubcek (1921-1992) is followed throughout the 20th century in situational circumstances revealing the internal conflicts of the personality of the politician, as well as of the society. According to the director and producer Robert Kirchhoff, the filming and organisation of the film were extremely demanding. They concerned an extensive collection of material including work with archival sources and protagonists from different parts of the world, where Dubcek left his mark. It also involved hundreds of hours of material in the range of 60 terabytes. The production took place from 2018 to 2021 on locations in Kyrgyzstan, Italy, Czech Republic, Germany, Turkey and Slovakia. Personalities of domestic and foreign politics and culture, such as Romano Prodi, Umberto Eco, Pavel Kohout, Karel Vachek, Jáchym Topol, Petr Pithart, Eugen Gindl, and many others will appear in the film. The creative documentary is produced by Kirchhoff´s atelier.doc and co-produced by the Radio and Television Slovakia, endorfilm and the Czech Television. Support comes from the Slovak Audiovisual Fund, the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic, Creative Europe and the Czech Film Fund.

Opportunity for 15 Producers to participate in the second Creative Producer Indaba

Submissions have opened for the second Creative Producer Indaba, the professional development programme offered by the Realness Institute, in partnership with EAVE, International Film Festival Rotterdam’s IFFR Pro, and the Marrakech International Film Festival’s Atlas Workshops.

The Creative Producer Indaba (CPI) offers 15 Producers an opportunity to further develop their producer-related leadership and entrepreneurial proficiencies and build on their creative skills.

"Strong creative producers with connections to international financing serve as engines that can spur local media markets to grow, adapt, and thrive. Our ultimate aim is to strengthen the pool of capable producers on the continent that can help drive the growth of our respective local markets and to equip these producers with the skills, community, and resources they need to develop and finance our stories," says Mehret Mandefro, Director of Development and Partnership, Realness Institute.

The programme comprises plenary sessions and group work, unpacking successful case studies, and having access to individual meetings with mentors and guest experts. As this is a producer-facing development programme, the focus will be on project development and planning, financing, legal, PR and marketing, advocacy and lobbying, organisational development, network management, and leadership.

Kristina Trapp, CEO at EAVE says, “Knowledge sharing leads to progress and EAVE is a community committed to sharing experience and expertise in order to sustain and transform the business in a collaborative effort. EAVE is proud to be a partner of Creative Producer Indaba for the second year to help foster a community of strong producers and industry leaders in Africa and build bridges on the continent as well as internationally.”

The programme is anchored by two workshops. Workshop 1 has online sessions from 9 – 12 November 2022 followed by in-person sessions at Atlas Workshops from 14-17 November 2022 during Marrakech International Film Festival. Workshop 2 has in-person sessions at the International Film Festival Rotterdam from 26 January to 2 February 2023.

We are very proud and excited to be part of Indaba again, a programme that has proven to be pivotal in producers’ careers," says Inke van Loocke, Head of IFFR Pro. "It not only brings their skills to the next level, but it consolidates their creative approach to projects and running a company in a sustainable way. One of the best parts of Indaba is the bridges that are built, nurturing not only individual careers but the industry as a whole. We look forward to the creative exchange and exploring all the opportunities and challenges that will arise during the workshop together with the participants, experts, and partners."

“Highlights worth mentioning from the 2020 edition were industry insights from Christopher Mack, Director of Grow Creative at Netflix, Makhosazana Khanyile from the National Film and Video Foundation in South Africa, ex-Director of Sundance, Tabitha Jackson, and Vanja Kaludjercic, Festival Director at International Film Festival Rotterdam,” says Elias Ribeiro, Head of Studies and Executive Director of the Realness Institute.

The selected participants will be mentored by Group Leaders, EAVE graduates Mehret Mandefro and Diana Elbaum, Story Expert, EAVE graduate Mmabatho Kau, plus a host of guest speakers, all in leading roles in our industry.

The call for submissions goes out to Producers (with and without projects) from Africa; producers from outside the continent with an interest in co-producing with Africa and film professionals from other disciplines such as funding bodies, international sales, distribution, broadcasters, and development executives with a stake in the African marketplace. Through a partnership with Brazilian foundation, Projeto Paradiso, one place is guaranteed for a Brazilian producer with a link to an African project.

There are relevant criteria for submissions and costs to cover to participate, like the flight to Rotterdam. All details can be found on the Realness Institute website; https://www.realness.institute/creative-producer-indaba.

Importantly, applicants are required to have produced at least one feature fiction, a series, or documentary film; or a minimum of two short films as a lead producer or co-producer (executive producer, associate, or line producer does not qualify). Film professionals must have a minimum of two years of professional experience.

The deadline for submissions is 22 August 2022 at 17:00 Central African time.

The Creative Producers Indaba is made possible through the support of Documentary Africa, International Emerging Film Talent Association (IEFTA), Institut Français d'Afrique du Sud, the Brazilian foundation Projeto Paradiso, and The Storyboard Collective in partnership with European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs (EAVE), International Film Festival Rotterdam Pro (IFFR Pro) and Marrakech International Film Festival (Atlas Workshops).

Apply now for TIES THAT BIND 2022!

The call for applications for the 14th edition of TIES THAT BIND Asia - Europe Co-Production Workshop in 2022 is now open until August 19, 2022.

We are very proud to announce a new partnership with TAICCA - Taiwan Creative Content Agency and to unveil the new dates and location of the Asian session of the workshop!!

TAICCA: “After the very fruitful TIES THAT BIND on Demand Workshop in 2021, TAICCA is very glad to extend and deepen our partnership with TIES THAT BIND in 2022. We hope by this partnership, TAICCA and TTB will be able to  build stronger connections between Europe and Asia”.

Kristina Trapp, EAVE: “In addition to our existing strong partnerships in several Asian countries and regions, we are thrilled to start this privileged partnership with TAICCA for TIES THAT BIND.”

Sabrina Baracetti, Far East Film Festival: “The Far East Film Festival was born with the aim to create a bridge between East and West. TTB is the place where this bridge finds its realisation. After having been distanced in the past two years, we feel the need to create a place where stories intertwine. We are confident that Taipei is our new beginning!"

Paolo Vidali, Friuli Venezia Giulia Audiovisual Fund: ”TTB has grown steadily over its 12+ year life. Having such a prestigious organisation on board now as TAICCA will give a further boost to a project that unites and will unite European and Asian cinema.”

What is TTB?

TIES THAT BIND is the leading training programme for European-Asian co-production. The participants will work with top-notch industry professionals from both continents. The sessions will focus on script development, co-production between Asia and Europe, public and private financing in the two regions, pitching, marketing and distribution. They will meet leading Asian and European sales agents, funders and potential co-producers during FOCUS ASIA in Udine.

Target Group

TTB is targeted at European & Asian producers focusing on project development. We will select 5 European and 5 Asian producers. In addition to feature fiction films, we are open to TV series or animation fiction films in development. We encourage you to bring your directors to the workshop.

We also welcome applications from European professionals interested in working with Asia such as sales agents, financiers, distributors, festival programmers, co-production market representatives, or European producers who wish to focus on their career development. We will select 5 career participants to be an active part of the group. In order to benefit from all aspects of the programme, they will be able to partner with project participants and attend the meetings with the experts and decision makers together.

2 Workshops
Workshop 1 will take place in early November 2022, in Taipei, Taiwan, within the framework of the TCCF - Taiwan Creative Content Fest.

Workshop 2 will take place at the end of April 2023 in Udine, Italy, within the framework of the Udine Far East Film Festival & FOCUS ASIA.

To name just some of the TTB success stories from the last few years: LEONOR WILL NEVER DIE by Martika Escobar (World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award: Innovative Spirit at Sundance 2022), MONEYBOYS by C.B. Yi (Un Certain Regard in Cannes 2021), HOLY EMY by Araceli Lemos (Best Film Top Prize at LAGFF’s Orpheus Awards 2022, Special Mention Award in Locarno 2021), WHETHER THE WEATHER IS FINE by Carlo Francisco Manatad (Youth Jury Award in Locarno 2021), THE SEEN AND UNSEEN by Kamila Andini (Grand Prize of the Generation 14plus International Jury at Berlinale 2018), A YELLOW BIRD by K. “TIES THAT BIND offers a great opportunity for exchange, strong networking, finding more financing possibilities, expanding the knowledge as well as business. Different feedback from diverse backgrounds is a great advantage for the project development.

“It was great to have inter-continental dialogue between Asia and Europe at TIES THAT BIND. It helped to question preconceptions on both sides and understand each other's realities better. As an Asian participant, it's great to be able to have the opportunity to connect not just with European producers but also with producers from other Asian countries. I very much feel that I will be keeping in touch with a lot of my cohort for the years to come.”

SPECIAL OFFERS FOR EAVE GRADUATES - Green Film Lab

Green Film Lab keeps on training European cinema professionals on green practices with the third call for applications of 2022. The programme - promoted by TorinoFilmLab and GREEN FILM in collaboration with EAVE - will unfold with a new workshop in Sitges (Spain) from 14th to 16th October thanks to the collaboration of Government of Catalonia, Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies, Catalunya Film Commission and Servei de Desenvolupament Empresarial.

Overall, Green Film Lab includes a number of intensive 3-day workshops, held in English, that take place along the year in different European countries and regions, in collaboration with various film institutions and funds, proposing a comparable structure.

Green Film Lab targets

  • European production teams developing a fiction or documentary feature film - at an advanced stage of development - who are willing to make their shooting more sustainable
  • film production professionals eager to hone their skills on how to work on environmentally friendly audiovisual productions
  • green managers interested in learning how to apply their expertise to film sets.

We especially welcome applications from teams who got support from the Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies and/or teams who will shoot in Catalunya.

The applications to participate can be submitted until 1st September, here.

The participation is free of charge, however, the attendees must cover their travel and accommodation costs.

GREEN FILM LAB aims at a more sustainable audiovisual industry and it is truly committed to changing mindset and habits regarding environmental issues in the field.

Each workshop is open to 24 participants selected to work in groups under the guidance of green manager tutors with wide experience in film industry, on feature film projects almost ready to begin filming.

Through a practical, project-based and hands-on approach, the participants will learn how to apply the current best practices in terms of energy saving, transport, accommodation, catering, set decoration, waste management, recycling and communication.

The training is based on the Green Film Rating System and its two main features: the sustainability plan and the certification process for audiovisual projects.

Green Film Lab Head of Studies is the Italian producer and TFL alumnus Giovanni Pompili that works with Louise Marie Smith (UK), founder and managing director of Neptune Environmental Solutions and with Morgane Baudin (France), producer, consultant and trainer on sustainability for film & TV.

Green Film Lab is a programme by TorinoFilmLab and Green Film, promoted by the National Museum of Cinema and Trentino Film Commission, in collaboration with EAVE. Supported by Creative Europe – MEDIA Programme.
