EAVE February News 2017

Welcome to the EAVE Producers Workshop’s 2017 edition!

Energized by the success of our producers in Berlin - coming home with 5 Silver Bears, 1 Crystal Bear and 13 other main awards – EAVE is looking forward to launch the 2017 edition of the EAVE Producers Workshop in our home-base Luxembourg, in partnership with the Luxembourg Film Fund.

52 producers from 41 countries have been chosen out of almost 180 applications to develop the 32 selected documentary and feature film projects and work on their entrepreneurial skills throughout the year. (Please see the full list of participants at the end of the press release).

Workshop 1 takes place from March 2–9 at the Légère Premium Hotel Luxembourg.

Part of the special programme for this week:

  • The creative triangle producer-writer-director: Piodor Gustafsson of Spark Productions (SE) will address in his plenary session questions related to the producer-director-writer triangle and tools that can be used to ensure that they are all on the same page in regard to the development of their project.
  • Become a PMD/marketing expert: Sarah Calderon and Gudrun Burie will run a special ‘marketing incubator programme’ in the groups and over the whole year, offering an intense PMD marketing training in cooperation with the EAVE Marketing Workshop.
  • Spot on docs: Danish producer and EAVE group leader Lise Lense-Møller will devote her plenary session to the specific questions and challenges related to the development of documentaries.
  • How to develop your idea: Guest expert Paul Tyler (Handling Ideas, DK) will show the participants how to transform an idea into a concept using a simple toolbox that allows filmmakers to develop stories and formats.
  • Digital single market: A glimpse into current EU copyright issues will be offered by Bence Kertesz from the European Commmission.

The participants will start their EAVE journey under the guidance of EAVE Head of Studies Jani Thiltges (Samsa Film, LU), the four group leaders Roshanak Behesht Nedjad (In Good Company, DE), Didar Domehri (Maneki Films / Full House, FR) Lise Lense-Møller (Magic Hour Films, DK), and Riina Sildos (Amrion, EE); the script consultants Clare Downs (UK), Jacques Akchoti (FR), Martin Daniel (USA), and documentary expert Sylvia Stevens (Faction Films, UK). They are joined by the EAVE specialized experts - for Pitching: Sibylle Kurz (DE), Finance and Company Planning: Linda Beath (Ideal Filmworks, IT), Marketing: Sarah Calderon (The Film Agency, ES) & Gudrun Burie (The PR Factory, BE) and Legal Issues: Katrine Schlüter Schierbeck (Aumento advokatfirma, DK), who share their expertise in plenary and group work sessions as well as individual meetings.

We will also offer the EAVE producers opportunities to network with Luxembourg professionals and to explore co-production opportunities during a visit to the Filmland Studios and the Luxembourg City Film Festival.

All plenary sessions are open for interested local professionals. For the detailed programme, please contact EAVE Workshop Manager Satu Elo satu@eave.org.

THE FORBIDDEN AUNT shooting in Serbia, USA and Australia

  • PAUL SANCHEZ EST REVENU by Patricia Mazuy, producer: EAVE graduate Patrick Sobelman is in production. Written by Yves Thomas and Patricia Mazuy, the screenplay opens with a piece of news: Paul Sanchez, a criminal who disappeared 15 years ago, is back! At the Les Arcs police station, nobody can quite believe it, except perhaps female police officer Marion… Produced by Patrick Sobelman for Ex Nihilo, the film is being co-produced by Cinéfeel, Belgian company Les Films du Fleuve, and by SBS, which will handle the film’s distribution in France along with international sales. Pre-purchased by Canal+ and Ciné+, the feature has also received support in the form of an advance on receipts from the CNC and Manon Sofica. Filming will take place until 6 April in the Var.

  • THE FORBIDDEN AUNT by Bojana Novakovic, producer: EAVE graduate Milan Stojanovic is in production. The directorial debut of Serbian actress Bojana Novakovic centers on the director’s own aunt. In a world swamped with soap operas, a Serbian family proves that life is far more dramatic, frightening and stranger than fiction, as Novakovi? seeks to uncover the life and personality of the one family member she was never allowed to know – her bohemian, endlessly energetic aunt Gordana. “What started as a video portrait of Bojana’s aunt Gordana, developed into a touching family drama and a feature documentary film, that uncovers secrets and traumas of several generations of women in one family,” said Stojanovi?. The film has received funding from Film Center Serbia. Shooting is currently underway on location in Serbia, USA and Australia.

THE WAY OF THE EAST now in post-production

  • THE WAY OF THE EAST by Katarina Mutic, producer: EAVE graduate Milan Stojanovic is in post-production. The documentary is about Desanka, a fortune-teller. How does the day pass for a person like her? How does her family live with her? And does she solve her own problems with the same ease as others people's problems? We might think that this is just easy money, but rarely do we entertain the fact that these fortune-tellers, witches or whatever we call them, have a life, a home, a family… Milan Stojanovi? is producing through Serbia’s Sense Production in co-production with the Faculty of Dramatic Arts. The film benefitted from postproduction support from Film Center Serbia. “The Way of the East started off as an exam task for Katarina, but the story and Katarina’s work with the characters surpassed that framework by far, bringing extraordinary insight into the everyday life of an (extra)ordinary family in a remote Serbian village,” Stojanovi? said. Shooting took place from June 2014 to August 2015 on location in East Serbia. No distributor or sales agent is attached to the project yet. TV rights haven’t been bought yet and the premiere date has yet to be determined.

Submissions are now open for Fingal Film Festival

A major revamp of the Fingal Film Festival’s annual event is underway with a summer weekend packed with film, comedy and live music. Taking place on the 11th & 12th August, the new summer festival format will be hosted in the open air venue at Swords Castle Co Dublin with outdoor screenings, live music, stand-up comedy and late night DJ’s.

As the preparations get underway for the 2017 Fingal Film Festival, the team have decided to revamp its annual format to raise a greater awareness of independent films, by attracting other festival goers that are usually drawn to music or comedy events.

Although the festival has seen a significant audience growth over the last few years, we believe it is our responsibility as festival organisers to ensure we reinvent ourselves, by attracting larger audiences with a bigger venue this year, ensuring our participating filmmakers’ work is exposed to a wider demographic, says Festival Founder Liz Kenny.

It is imperative we make the festival more appealing to non-filmgoers by holding an event that resonates with all ages. We believe the “Film Festival” themed event on its own alienates an audience, as they feel it’s for experienced filmmakers and filmgoers alike, says Creative Director Dave Byrne. In fact, it’s the opposite. Everybody loves film and our aim is to expose audiences to the Independent film concept, whilst offering a fun packed weekend. A full schedule of events will be rolled out in the coming months and promises to attract audiences from all over Ireland and abroad. As the festival is now open for submissions, the organisers are encouraging filmmakers from Fingal and beyond to submit their films for consideration, as this year will be one of the biggest Independent Film Festival events of 2017.

For more information on how to submit your film, for the following categories – Best Fingal Newcomer – Best Animation – Best Short Film – Best Student – Best Documentary – Best International - Scannan Gaeilge Is Fearr – Outstanding Achievement in Media.
