  • ZERO IMPUNITY, by Nicolas Blies, Stéphane Hueber-Blies and EAVE graduate Marion Guth is supported by FILMFUND (LU) and CNC (FR). The feature animated documentary produced by a_BAHN decrypts impunity and how rape is used as a weapon in current armed conflicts. Despite increasingly refined war technology, mass rape is used as a tool of war in modern combat. Some 25,000 to 40,000 women were victims of mass rape during the Balkan war 1992-1995. Twenty years after these crimes, only very few cases of war crimes of sexual violence have been investigated and prosecuted. For the women in the film the rapes remain a dark shadow in their lives enshrouded by taboo. For these women legal justice is the only hope to regain integrity and life. However, justice fails and betrays them all the way to the International Criminal Court of Justice in The Hague.

Meanwhile, the factory has been relocated to the suburbs of Tunis, and in it unemployed Foued sees the chance to take care of his mother and, above all, woo a girl he likes. The paths of Hervé and Foued start to mirror each other and intertwine. Produced by Saïd Hamich for Barney Production, Vent du Nord is co-produced by Hélicotronc and Tunisian firm Propaganda. Call for applications: EAVE Producers Workshop 2017 - deadline September 16, 2016

EAVE is aimed at producers, both fiction and documentary, who are already working in the film and television industries who wish to begin to operate on a European wide basis by increasing their knowledge of producing and co-producing in Europe and by building up a pan European professional network. We also welcome applications from associated branches of the industry – e.g. commissioning, funding, legal and finance, festivals & markets, media administration. Each year fifty participants are selected from most of the EU countries and beyond and take part in three one-week long workshops.

Half the participants attend the course with projects and it is an excellent means of development through intense focus on the project with colleagues and experts throughout the year. Most participants attending with a project also bring their writer for the first two weeks which enables producer and writer to benefit together from one-to-one sessions with script experts.

During the first two workshops, participants work within groups led by experienced producers and with several experts on script analysis, development and production financing, legal aspects of co-production, marketing, pitching, packaging and more. In the third workshop 50-60 Decision Makers (commissioning editors, national and regional media funds, sales agents, etc.) join the participants to discuss the projects, companies and careers of the participa

Upcoming Deadlines

Good Pitch Europe- Calls for Entry

Deadline: September 15

We are delighted to announce the next edition of Good Pitch Europe, which will be hosted in Copenhagen in March 2017 in collaboration with CPH:DOX Film Festival. This edition marks the climax of a three year programme of investment and commitment to the filmmaker and changemaker community across the Nordic region, after which Good Pitch will be traveling on to other parts of Europe.

We will be looking for 7 filmmaking teams and 8 European Impact Producers to take through the programme of labs and mentorship as well as the live Good Pitch event. For three years now this programme has been made possible by the incredible support of Creative Europe, the Culture Foundation of the Swedish Postcode Lottery, Kone Foundation, Fritt Ord Foundation, Democracy & Media Foundation, Nordisk Film & TV Fund, Finnish Film Foundation, Norwegian Film Institute, Swedish Film Institute and AVEK Foundation.

1) Call out to European filmmakers working on social and environmental justice film projects to apply by the September 15th deadline.

Good Pitch is looking for films which tackle a national or global issue, with something important to show us about the world or ourselves. Films of any style are welcomed - personal, observational, essays, presenter-led, verité. Projects can be at any stage from early production to completion and even early festival circuit (although rough cut stage is ideal), and they should be 60+ minutes in length (although we welcome plans to make shorter versions). Filmmakers applying for Good Pitch should already have outreach or audience engagement ambitions for their film. Impact campaigns can take any form, with any ultimate goal – it could seek to effect behavioural change, policy change and/or engage with the issues raised in new and interesting ways.

Apply here: goodpitch.org/events/gpeu2017 Successful applicants will be informed by 30th September 2016.

2) Call out for European Impact Producers to join the Impact Producer Lab.

Films have producers to manage the creative and financial process from script to screen. But where a filmmaker aspires to create positive social or environmental impact with their project, they may now need a specialised ‘impact producer’ to take their film from completion to impact. At BRITDOC we are helping to train up this new generation of Impact Producers. We are looking to select eight individuals from across Europe who are either doing this work, or ready to step into this role. The eight professionals will attend the 27-30th October 2016 Impact Producers Lab in Finland, which will be run under our Good Pitch programme.

Apply here: https://britdoc.org/impact-lab/ Successful applicants will be informed by 30th September 2016.

Southeast Asian Film Financing Project Market

Submissions will close on 6 September 2016

Creative Content Association Malaysia (CCAM), announced the collaboration with Southeast Asian Audio-Visual Association (SAAVA) at the upcoming Southeast Asian Film Financing (SAFF) Project Market 2016. With the aim to enable Malaysian feature film content creators to submit feature-length projects of which 5 will be selected and thereafter matched to a global network of media financiers, distributors and collaborators thus bringing these projects closer to fruition.

SAFF Project Market 2016 will be held at the Marina Bay Sands Singapore from 7 – 9 December 2016.

“This Project Market is in line with the needs of our local film industry’s yearning to hook up with international film industry players to produce films that speak to the world audience,” said Dato’ Mahyidin Mustakim, Chief Executive Officer of CCAM. “Providing a platform where our local content can thrive in the global arena creates an opportunity that is not to be missed, and the location where it is to be held that is closer to home is unmistakably perfect,” he added.

Justin Deiman, Executive Director of SAAVA and Managing Partner of Aurora Media Capital, an international media fund based out of Singapore said, "Malaysia is a key film market in the Southeast Asian content equation. There's a huge growth potential there given the institutional support it has been receiving, and most importantly, there's an exceptionally strong talent base there that's pushing out international quality projects that will break out beyond its borders."

This marks the first collaboration between CCAM and SAAVA, and fulfils one of CCAM’s mandate and agenda which is to promote and export local content to overseas market. Driven by initiatives that will propel Malaysian filmmakers onto the international scene, CCAM believes this collaboration will flourish and develop into something that establishes Malaysian filmmakers as talents that can stand on equal grounds with successful international filmmakers.

"Given the keen sense of interest surrounding the surge of great content coming from Malaysia, SAAVA is delighted to work with CCAM in creating an initiative highlighting the exciting new wave of Malaysian filmmakers who will showcase their world-class projects to top financiers from around the world at the SAFF Project Market," Justin said.

Submissions for Southeast Asian Film Financing Project Market will close on 6 September 2016 and information can be accessed at http://www.screensingapore.com.sg/film-financing-forum/

MANNHEIM MEETING PLACE

Call for entries

MMP is a world-wide co-production event for first or second feature PRODUCERS with some artistic intent.

When projects arrive:  their presentations are developed as ca. 8-page Project Outlines which are then sent to relevant (and usually experienced)  minority co-producers around the world. (This preparation can take up to 10 weeks and 20 versions, working intermittently from one’s office).

The Outlines are a developed version of criteria requested on the MMP Producer Guidelines page: http://www.iffmh.de/mannheim-meeting-place/mmp-2016-producer-guidelines

The reading Minority producers and MMP experts provide (at first anonymous) feedback which is incorporated into the Outlines to optimize their content. All feedback is replied to.

Where there is positive interest from minority producers, script reading & discussion take place, and positions are developed.

Participants  with confirmed  interest in projects are then invited to Mannheim (ticket and hotel paid, Nov.13-16 in 2016), for further collaboration.

Appointments at Mannheim MMP  are arranged after individual discussion of all participants with each attendee – thus optimizing each visit to Mannheim.

Projects with no interest are mostly not physically invited, but we hardly ever give up and we still follow and support many projects in further years.

TALL IDEA PRAGUE 2016

New festival Vertifilms will present films in previously damned "vertical" format

August 10, 2016 - First festival of vertical films - Vertifilms will be held at the National Gallery in Prague this November. Along with screenings of international films shot in portrait format, the winning works of the competition TALL IDEA PRAGUE 2016 will be presented. Creators can enter their vertical films starting on September 1.

On Thursday, November 3, in the Convent of St Agnes of Bohemia will be presented films in format, which was previously condemned, but now is currently gaining more and more supporters. "Vertifilms Festival, the first of its kind in our country, aims to highlight the uniqueness of the vertical image. It is format, in which portraits been historically painted, and which is bringing a completely different perspective of the film image. We are pleased to cooperate on this project with Moving Image Department, which has been running for more than a year as a part of the National Gallery in Prague in the Trade Fair Palace. This connection is a proof of the uniqueness and aesthetics of video format that was previously viewed more as a mistake, " says festival director Krystof Safer.

Vertical films will be screened at the imposing canvas nearly ten meters high in the premises of the church of St. Salvator. "Vertifilms is a great supplement of exhibition series Moving Image Department by which the National Gallery in Prague in 2015 expanded its dramaturgy to showcase contemporary creators in new media. Vertifilms is part of the 5th chapter and we are glad that we can give a project based on the polarity of the phenomenon of classic film and completely novel form," says Adam Budak, the Chief Curator of the National Gallery in Prague.

From September 1 to October 28 can creators of contemporary vertical films in enter the competition TALL IDEA PRAGUE 2016. Anyone from around the world can participate by sending his film format 9:16 in length from 1-10 minutes. Festival closing ceremony will be on the same day, November 3, preceded by conference on the phenomenon of vertical video.

TTB project INTERCHANGE on Piazza Grande in Locarno!

We are delighted to announce that TIES THAT BIND 2012 project INTERCHANGE by Dain Iskandar Said will premiere at Festival del Film Locarno’s Piazza Grande!

The project was developed at TIES THAT BIND Europe-Asia Co-production Workshop by producer Nandita Solomon, Appart (Malaysia). She reflected her experience as “instrumental in shaping key decisions related to the direction of the project and making me consider the realities of producing a film as an independent producer from Asia in the global context.”

Interchange is financed by Sonneratia Capital, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDeC) and Seeing Eye Films with support from the National Film Development Board Malaysia (FINAS) and Indonesian co-producer Cinesurya.

World sales is handled by Reel Suspects, while XYZ Films is representing the film for North American sales. GSC Movies is handling theatrical distribution in Malaysia with release slated for later this year and Praesens-Film is handling Swiss distribution.

Interchange revolves around a forensics photographer lured into a world of shamans and mystic creatures while helping his detective friend investigate a series of macabre murders.

Haunted by sombre visions, forensics photographer Adam retreats from the world, staying home and taking photos of his neighbours until he is dragged into another investigation by his best friend, the detective Man, who asks his help to solve a series of macabre ritual murders. At the same time, Adam’s seemingly innocuous pastime soon turns darker when he spies Iva, a young woman from Borneo. Smitten by her, he is soon entangled in her web of mystery and murder. As Adam is dragged further into Iva’s tribal world and Man delves deeper into his investigation, they discover the city’s mystical underground of shamans and supernatural beings.

Another TIES THAT BIND 2013 project A YELLOW BIRD, directed by K. Rajagopal and produced by Jeremy Chua & Fran Borgia (Akanga Film Asia, Singapore) & Acrobates Films, France, premiered earlier this year at Semaine de la Critique Cannes 2016.

World Sales is handled by Alpha Violet.

A Yellow Bird tells a story of Siva, a Singaporean Indian man, who is released after years in prison for contraband smuggling. Unable to find forgiveness from his mother, he begins a quest to locate his ex-wife and daughter. Just as he finds solace and hope in the company of an illegal Chinese prostitute, he is confronted with an unbearable truth about his family. How far will he go in order to redeem himself from his guilt?

After its premiere at Semaine de la Critique in Cannes, the film will travel to festivals in Germany, Mexico, Poland, Russia, South Korea and the Netherlands.
