Keeping their distance, they treat each other with mutual suspicion. • THE MIRACLE OF THE SARGASSO SEA by Syllas Tzoumerkas, producers: EAVE graduates Maria Drandaki, Ellen Havenith, Olle Wirenhed and EAVE+ graduate Titus Kreyenberg has entered the pre-production stage. Set in a small, austerity-riddled, decaying town in Greek suburbia, the film is set to be Tzoumerkas’ first foray into genre narratives, as the script follows two women who get involved in a mysterious suicide case. As the case’s secrets are uncovered, the two unlikely heroines will discover striking similarities between them, as in this senseless, bland world, neither seems too eager to abide by the law. First presented as an in-development project in 2015 at the Rotterdam-Berlinale Express, where it was awarded the Special Mention of the Eurimages Jury, Syllas Tzoumerkas’ third feature (following HOMELAND and A BLAST) is supported by MEDIA, the Greek Film Center, the Nederlands Filmfonds, Film Väst, Film und Medienstiftung NRW and ERT SA. Shooting is planned for summer.

  • WAITING by Zuzana Liova, co-producer: EAVE graduate Jana Cisar is in development. The film is an intimate drama about a man who just turned 60 and learns that he’s dying of cancer. „I intend to make a film about how definiteness and infinity intersect in our lives. Dying is not just a physical process, it also has a symbolic meaning. Our attitudes, habits and egoism disappear as well“, says Zuzana Liová, who has just finished writing the third draft of the script. Slovakia’s HITCHHIKER Cinema is producing in coproduction with Mimesis Film from the Czech Republic and Germany‘s Jana Cisar Filmproduktion. Support comes from the Slovak Audiovisual Fund.

The only certainty in her life are her childish dreams and swimming. „I wanted to tell a story from a child’s point of view“, said the director, who wrote the script of NINA together with Marek Lescak. Punkchart Films is producing in co-production with Czech endorfilm. The Slovak Audiovisual Fund, Creative Europe MEDIA, the Czech State Cinematography Fund and Bratislava Self-Governing Region are supporting.

  • Ties That Bind project WOMEN OF THE WEEPING RIVER, producer: Ties That Bind graduate Karim Aitouna has finished post-production. A story of blood feud where women try to undo the cycle of violence while men seek vengeance. “The film is located in the island of Mindanao, a rarely shown community in contemporary Filipino cinema”, says Aitouna. “It addresses the sensitive issues of the blood feud in this region and the place of Muslim women living there. The filmmaker is a native Mindanaoan. I am convinced of the value of his film and his words, of his cinema’s strength and of his desires as a filmmaker. He can distill magic from his realism and manage to suggest a lot with very little. Beyond that, the story highlights two women’s efforts for peace and their generosity of feelings despite the pain that touches to the depth of their soul. The film shows that, unlike men, women possess a great strength to lead and to protect their destiny. It is a film honoring all these women who carry the future, the hope, the beauty, the love and work every day for a better life.”

Transilvania Pitch Stop goes international

Call for Applications

Deadline: April 27, 2017

The 16th edition of Transilvania International Film Festival announces increased joined activities related to film industry, as part of the continuous work to promote cinema and establish a platform for international co-production.
The 4th edition of Transilvania Pitch Stop (TPS), the successful initiative focused, until recently, only on development and pitching of local feature film projects, extends internationally as of this year. The program was included by Eurimages Fund among the European industry events to present the Eurimages Co-production Development Award amounting to €20,000.
TPS aims to discover a strong selection of projects from Romania and the countries around Romania destined for European co-production such as: Hungary, Bulgaria, Serbia, Ukraine, Russia, Moldova, Greece, Turkey and Georgia. The program aims to foster cross-border cooperation especially between the Black Sea countries and other countries invited to be part of the initiative.
TPS will presents a selection of approximate 12 projects, coming from 1st and 2nd time directors, currently in development and financing to international film professionals, facilitating their international visibility and establishing the right connections to ensure financing for their projects. Directors and producers of the selected projects will be invited to the industry event organized by Transilvania IFF on June 9th & 10th.
“It's an honor for us to be among the 10 European festivals to grant the Eurimages Co-production Development Award. It's a sign of appreciation for the success of our industry-related initiatives throughout the years and for the efforts to boost international co-productions. We continue our mission, to discover young talents, by developing a platform for the countries around Romania and the Black Sea. It's always hard to co-produce for 1st and 2nd time directors, especially in this part of Europe”, says Dorina Oarga, Head of Industry, Transilvania IFF.
