EAVE project FIUME O MORTE! by Igor Bezinovic, producers: EAVE graduates Tibor Keser, Vanja Jambrovic, co-producer: EAVE graduate Marina Gumzi is in pre-production. The film reconstructs the events after the First World War in which the Italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio, accompanied by about a thousand rebellious Italian soldiers, captured the city of Rijeka in September 1919 and declared it his own micro-nation. This was followed by a short period in which, according to many, Rijeka became a world haven for artists and free thinkers, but also a place where the idea of nationalism flourished. Following bloody clashes in January 1921, the regular Italian army expelled D’Annunzio, but many ideas that emerged during his Rijeka episode were seen later in Mussolini’s regime. "We have been developing this project for the past four years. With the recent support from Eurimages, we’ll be able to film it in the way it was originally envisioned. Although the documentary is dealing with a historic event a hundred years ago in Rijeka, we believe it has great international potential, both because of its original directing approach and the still relevant topic of strengthening nationalist ideologies", said producer Vanja Jambrovic. The film was supported by the Croatian Audiovisual Centre, Creative Europe and Eurimages as well as the RE-ACT programme, the Wajda School. Additional funding was secured from the City of Rijeka, City of Zagreb, Croatian Film Directors Guild, the Italian Ministry of Culture, Regional fund Friuli, Venezia Guila, and the Slovenian Film Centre.

TTB project ARNOLD IS A MODEL STUDENT is shooting

  • TTB project ARNOLD IS A MODEL STUDENT by Sorayos Prapapan, producer: TTB graduate Donsaron Kovitvanitcha, co-producer: EAVE graduate Denis Vaslin, TTB graduate Jeremy Zelnik is shooting in January 2022. Arnold, a half Thai-Filipino boy lives alone in Bangkok. His parents are seeking political asylum in a country far away from Thailand. His school is one of the best schools in Thailand where parents are willing to bribe the headmaster to get their kids into the school, but Arnold despises Thai educational system which teaches students to believe without questioning. During the political unrest in 2014, when middle class people in Bangkok were calling the military to get rid of the corrupt politician, Arnold meets Bee, a guy who works for an agency that works in cheating the military school entrance examination. Bee wants a clever student like Arnold to help stupid rich kid become a cadet. Though being a sceptic, Arnold joins Bee agency anyway and earns a lot of money. The job takes him to the world of corruption and let him see the double standard of morality in Thailand. The project has received support from Aide aux Cinémas du monde (France), Hubert Bals Fund (The Netherlands), NFF+HBF Co-production Scheme (The Netherlands), HBF+Europe: Minority Co-production Support (The Netherlands), Southeast Asia Co-Production Grant (Singapore).

  • CHIARA by Susanna Nicchiarelli, producers: Interchange graduate Marta Donzelli, EAVE graduate Valérie Bournonville is shooting. The film recounts the life of Saint Clare (Chiara) of Assisi and concludes a trilogy of female biographies, which was initiated in 2017 by NICO, 1988 and continued in 2020 with MISS MARX. „Our aim is the same as that of Nico and Eleanor Marx: to reveal and explore the real-life person outside of history books”, Susanna Nicchiarelli explained. Clare is the very young noblewoman who imitated Francis of Assisi and embraced poverty. Born in 1194 to the rich and noble Offreducci family, Clare was only 12 years old when Francis of Assisi carried out the gesture of removing all his clothes. Bowled over by Francis’ example, on the evening of Palm Sunday seven years later, in 1211 or 1212, young Clare runs away from home to join him at Porziuncola Church. The Saint cuts her hair and tells her wear a Franciscan habit, before leading her to the Benedictine convent of St. Paul, in Bastia Umbra, where her father tries in vain to persuade her to return home. She subsequently takes refuge in the Church of St. Damian, where she establishes the Women’s Order of “poor nuns” (later called Clarisse) over which she is appointed Abbess and where Francis sets out his first Rule. CHIARA is co-produced by Italy and Belgium via Marta Donzelli and Gregorio Paonessa on behalf of Vivo Film, alongside RAI Cinema and Tarantula. The film enjoys support from the Italian Ministry of Culture’s Film and Audiovisual Department and from Eurimages.

  • THE OCCUPIED CITY by Steve McQueen, producer: EAVE graduate Floor Onrust is in production. The historical documentary is based on a book by McQueen’s wife, journalist and filmmaker Bianca Stigter, entitled Atlas of an Occupied City – Amsterdam 1940-1945. The Netherlands Film Fund stated: “Living in Amsterdam is like living with spirits. It looks like there are two parallel worlds. The past is always present.” A large element of the film will be looking at the Amsterdam of the present, and bringing out its “hidden history” and “traces” of the past. McQueen himself has been based in the city for several decades now. The film is budgeted at over $5 million – a large figure for a movie of this type – and US producers A24 and New Regency have boarded as co-financiers and international rights holders, joining Film4 and Lammas Park from the UK, and Family Affair Films from the Netherlands. Floor Onrust from the latter company is producing. Further partners on the Dutch-UK-US co-production are the Netherlands Film Fund, the Mondriaan Fund and the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts.

  • TORCH SONG by Jeroen Houben, producer: EAVE participant Noortje Wilschut is shooting. The plot focuses on Liz, a retired American pop singer who is still haunted by her former success. When her mother dies, she is left to her own devices and decides to visit her only relative – her estranged half-brother Gabe, whom she has not seen in years but who lives with his girlfriend Joey in Amsterdam, a place where Liz can still walk the streets and go fairly unnoticed. Her visit prompts turmoil within the couple, which will shake all three sides of this newly formed triangle. Inspired by stories of real-life celebrities, such as Kate Bush and Marvin Gaye, who at some point decided to disappear into anonymity, TORCH SONG intends to explore the friction between what we want people to know about us and what cannot be prevented from getting out to the masses. However, Houben confirms that instead of zooming in on the psychological journey of a character or a relationship, the emphasis is more on the theme of bonding. “Our story is not necessarily about Liz, and certainly not about the struggles of fame or anything like that, but rather about something more universal: a need to be ‘seen’ and recognised,” says the director. The project was developed with the support of the Netherlands Film Fund during the first two lockdowns in 2021, and was granted support from the Netherlands Production Incentive.

  • SIRIN by Senad Sahmanovic, producer: EAVE graduate Alem Babic is shooting. The Montenegrin filmmaker's feature debut is an identity drama following a lawyer who returns to her home country to resolve an inheritance case involving a rich woman who has bequeathed a large sum to the Orthodox church in her hometown. In order to do this, Nathalie has to re-examine her original identity and culture, which she had buried in an attempt to embrace the new one so that she could advance in her career. SIRIN is a co-production between Montenegro's Cut-Up, Croatia's Sekvenca, Albania's On Film Production, Kosovo's Buka and Bosnia's Dokument. Previously, the project took part in MIDPOINT Feature Launch, Sarajevo's CineLink, and Berlinale and Sarajevo Talents (where it won the Pack&Pitch Award), plus it received the Beaumarchais SACD Award and the Best Pitch Award at Prishtina's Pri Film Fest. Support comes from the Film Centre of Montenegro, the Croatian Audiovisual Centre, the Albanian National Center of Cinematography, the Kosovo Cinematography Center and Eurimages.

  • LOTUS by Signe Birkova, producer: EAVE FFF graduate Roberts Vinovskis is in production. The Latvian-Lithuanian co-production will centre on German-Baltic Countess Alice Von Trotta, who became an avant-garde filmmaker in Latvian silent cinema. The script for Lotus, penned by Birkova herself, tells the turbulent story of German-Baltic Countess Alice Von Trotta, an outsider who, by overcoming physical and mental obstacles and prejudices, became an avant-garde filmmaker in Latvian silent cinema. The feature promises to incorporate “elements of various film genres” and to include “quotes from world cinema classics”, with a special focus on silent cinema. To ensure greater authenticity, the silent film fragments will be shot with a 1921 camera, and instead of digital cameras, LOTUS will be filmed entirely with an analogue 16 mm camera using Kodak film stock. LOTUS is being produced by EAVE FFF graduate Roberts Vinovskis and Dominiks Jarmakovics for Latvia’s Studio Locomotive, and co-produced by Uljana Kim for Lithuania’s Studio Uljana Kim, with backing from the National Film Centre of Latvia and the Lithuanian Film Centre.

  • THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING by Timm Kröger, producer: EAVE graduate Heino Deckert is in production. The shooting of the co-production between Germany, Austria and Switzerland is taking place in the Austrian ski resort of St. Jakob Defereggen in the Alps. This picturesque mountainous location serves as the location for the historical mystery thriller set in 1962. The film is shot in Cinemascope and in black and white. It tells the story of Johannes and Karin. Johannes travels to a physics congress in Austria where he meets Karin, a pianist, who knows suspiciously much about him. A series of mysterious deaths occur and the two try to unveil the secret that lies under the mountain. Involved are an Iranian guest, a bizarre cloud formation in the sky and quantum-mechanics. THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING is a production of Ma.ja.de. Fiction (Germany) and The Barricades (Germany) in co-production with Panama Film (Austria) and Catpics AG (Switzerland). It is made possible in cooperation with ZDF/Arte, ORF and SRF and has received funding in Germany from BKM, Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and the German Federal Film Fund. In Austria, the project has received funding from the Austrian Film Institute, Filmstandort Austria (FISA), Filmfonds Vienna, the Province of Lower Austria and the Cine Tirol Filmcommission, and in Switzerland from the BAK and the Zurich Film Foundation.

Call for Applications: EAVE PUENTES – Europe / Latin America Co-Production Workshop 2022

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: February 21

The call for EAVE PUENTES, the most relevant and successful training programme for developing European-Latin American co-production, is now open for applications!

Who is it for?

The workshop is targeted at Latin American & European film professionals interested in developing strong bonds between Europe and Latin America. The selected group of applicants is composed by 10 producers focusing on project development, and 4-5 European film professionals (sales agents, financiers, distributors, festival programmers, coproduction market representatives) or European producers focusing on career development (not bringing a specific project).

How does it work?

Every year, the 15 selected participants discuss in a safe space their experiences; obstacles and challenges faced within the industry; and get and insight into the production conditions and markets in both continents with the group and with the top-notch professionals that form the pedagogical team. Additionally, the selected projects serve as real life case studies for the group.

Timeline
The interviews with a pre-selection of candidates will take place in April 2022 and the selection will be announced end of April.

PUENTES takes place in the course of two weeks of the year and is supported Creative Europe - MEDIA Programme of the European Union and IBERMEDIA. The first workshop of the 2022 edition will take place from July 11-15 in Italy in partnership with FVG Audiovisual Fund and MiC (Ministero dei Beni Ambientali e Culturali). The second workshop will be held in Uruguay in November/December, in partnership with Mutante Cine. Thanks to a special partnership, the PUENTES participants will attend VENTANA SUR after workshop 2.

CLICK HERE TO START YOUR APPLICATION!

The 2022 edition of PUENTES is the third one under the guidance and care of PUENTES Head of Studies and producer Fernanda del Nido, known for her prestigious track record of co-productions involving Europe and Latin America such as Oscar-winner UNA MUJER FANTASTICA, NERUDA, AGUA FRÍA DE MAR and PRINCESITA.

Among the core experts are French producer Didar Domehri (Maneki Films, FR) as group leader, script consultant Jacques Akchoti and Uruguayan producer Agustina Chiarino (Mutante Cine, UY). They will be joined by other key experts from both Europe and Latin America.

GREEN FILM LAB - HOW TO PRODUCE IN A SUSTAINABLE WAY

Green Film Lab is a new training programme driven by a strong engagement for a more sustainable approach in the audiovisual industry. It is directed towards strengthening environmental awareness to foster a change of mindset and habits regarding environmental issues in the field.

These are the foundations of Green Film Lab - the latest initiative of TorinoFilmLab, laboratory of the National Museum of Cinema, and of GREEN FILM, a Trentino Film Commission’s project - which wishes to invest in training European cinema professionals on green practices.

Along the year, Green Film Lab will propose a number of 3-day workshops addressed to film industry professionals as well as to green managers, that will be held in different European regions thanks to the collaboration of various film institutions and film funds.

Through a practical, project-based and hands-on approach, participants will learn how to apply the current best practices in terms of energy saving, transport, accommodation, catering, set decoration, waste management, recycling and communication.

The training is based on the Green Film Rating System and its two main features: the sustainability plan and the certification process for audiovisual projects. A certification represents the possibility for producers to see their efforts recognized in a tangible way and Green Film allows the certification of sustainable audiovisual projects in all European countries, including co-productions involving filming in different countries.

Green Film Lab is addressed to European teams, currently working on a fiction or documentary feature film at an advanced stage of development, who are willing to know how to deepen their knowledge on how to manage their sets to combine sustainability with financial and organizational efficiency, and also how to apply a common protocol and certification system shared through European borders that will facilitate their co-productions, easy to use and already tested by various film and TV productions.

It also targets film production professionals who want to gain skills on how to apply the current best practices by working on concrete projects and sustainability plans, and boost their professional profiles, as sustainable productions are becoming more and more required by public institutions and funds; as well as green managers (professionals working in the field of environmental management, even if not linked to audiovisual context) interested in getting an intensive training on the film industry mechanisms and on how to apply their expertise to film sets, working in close collaboration with film producers.

Each workshop is open to 24 participants selected to work in groups under the guidance of green manager tutors with wide experience in film industry, on feature film projects almost ready to begin filming. Every project’s team will be matched with a green manager and a producer without project.

The first workshop will be held in Trento (Italy) from 29th April until 1st May 2022.

Applications to participate can be submitted until 25th March 2022.

Participation fees, materials required to present a proposal and selection criteria are available here.

Green Film Lab will propose 2 more workshops during 2022, with specific call for applications that will open in the next months: the second workshop will be held on 29th-31st July 2022 in Palma de Mallorca (Spain) thanks to the collaboration of Mallorca Film Commission, Fundació Mallorca Turisme and Consell Insular de Mallorca; while the third one on 14th-16th October 2022 in Sitges (Spain), in collaboration with Government of Catalonia, Catalan Institute for Cultural Companies, Catalunya Film Commission and Servei de Desenvolupament Empresarial.

Green Film Lab Head of Studies is the Italian producer, EAVE and TFL alumnus Giovanni Pompili that will work side by side with Sophie Cornet (Belgium), who has been leading sustainability transformation projects for the cultural sector as an independent consultant since 2010, with Louise Marie Smith (UK), founder and managing director of Neptune Environmental Solutions and with Morgane Baudin (France), producer, consultant and trainer on sustainability for film & TV.

Green Film Lab is a programme of TorinoFilmLab and Green Film, promoted by the National Museum of Cinema and Trentino Film Commission, in collaboration with EAVE.

  • TorinoFilmLab is an audiovisual laboratory that supports international talents by combining training, development and funding activities for production and distribution. Since 2008, more than 1.000 film professionals have been trained within the TFL initiatives and almost 150 films have been presented at international festivals. Promoted by the National Museum of Cinema and is realised thanks to the Creative Europe - MEDIA programme of the European Union, Ministero della Cultura, Regione Piemonte and Città di Torino.

  • Green Film is a tool to reduce the environmental impact of film productions, launched by Trentino Film Commission in 2017. Green Film is a Rating System, developed to provide audiovisual producers with a set of criteria for working in a more environmentally sustainable way, and a Certification, awarded to projects that are compliant with those criteria. Thanks also to Cineregio and Italian Film Commissions acknowledgment, Green Film is currently used in several European countries.

  • EAVE is Europe’s leading training, development and networking organization for producers. In addition to our flagship programme, the renowned European Producers Workshop, we are involved in a variety of programmes in Europe, Asia, Latin America, Russia, Africa and the Middle East. Founded in 1988, EAVE’s objectives are to provide professional training opportunities and to bring producers from different regions of the world together with the aim of facilitating co-production relationships. EAVE’s unique international network comprises over 2,300 producers and key decision makers (funders, sales agents, distributors, commissioning editors etc.).

Running sustainable film companies in challenging times – Apply now for the April edition of EAVE+!

EAVE+ offers 15 producers the opportunity to discuss their company structures and management practices together with high-profile industry experts during 4,5 days to tackle the business side of running a film company.

The upcoming edition will focus on company sustainability and how to reinvent yourself in times of crisis. Under the title ‘transforming companies’ we will feature a series of company case studies and inspiring new business models and tackle the role of the producer as a leader.

Together with top-notch experts, we will also explore topics such as cashflow management, company strategies, negotiation with financiers and partners, and raising finance from investors and how to create viable business models for the future.

The workshop is led by EAVE+ Head of Studies Jani Thiltges (Samsa Film, LU). Other experts include Linda Beath (Ideal Filmworks, IT), Marc Bordure (AGAT FILMS & Cie / Ex Nihilo, FR), Michael Comyn (The Time Signal Limited, IE), Jonas Katzenstein (augenschein Filmproduktion, DE), Petri Kemppinen (Aurora Studios, FI) and Carole Scotta (Haut et Court, FR).

EAVE+ will take place from April 9-14, 2022 in Luxembourg.

« The EAVE+ workshop was a game changer for me and my team. I've acquired lots of new ideas and ways to develop my company. There is a "before" and "after". »

Eric Ruel, La Ruelle Films, Canada, EAVE+ 2021

Applications are open for independent producers with a solid track record and international experience from Europe and the rest of the world until January 31, 2022.

The programme is designed for producers who have been running their own company for five years + and/or who have worked five years + at senior management level in another company. We strongly recommend that two individuals at senior management level attend from each company

The workshop will tackle topics such as: How to structure my company more efficiently? How to grow as a company? How to reinvent yourself in times of crisis? How to sustain a viable business? How to diversify your company slate? What kind of leader am I? How to improve my team management? How to achieve a better life work balance?

EAVE consultant Linda Beath will take the EAVE+ participants to the next level of company management: how to hire and fire, cashflow management, how to structure your business, and other burning management issues.

EAVE management coach Michael Comyn (The Time Signal Limited, IE) will work on the individual leadership qualities and resilience in private coaching sessions.

Transforming Companies, new business models and company constellations will be one of the main topics throughout the workshop, that we will explore via a number of inspiring company case studies by Marc Bordure (AGAT FILMS & Cie / Ex Nihilo, FR), Jonas Katzenstein (augenschein Filmproduktion, DE), Petri Kemppinen (Aurora Studios, FI), and Carole Scotta (Haut et Court, FR).
