  • EAVE graduate Donato Rotunno’s Tarantula Luxembourg is currently working on several new projects, among them the Dutch-Belgian-Luxembourgish co-production A REAL VERMEER and a film named RAQS. A Real Vermeer is the new film by Dutch director Rudolf van den Berg, who is also writing the script alongside Jan Eilander. Tarantula got on board along with Dutch companies Rinkel Film, Fu Works, Cadenza Films and Belgian outfit Living Stone. The film has recently been granted €350,000 from Eurimages, and principal photography is expected to kick off in December.RAQS marks the return of Turkish director Yilmaz Arslan, an “atypical filmmaker”, according to producer Rotunno, who co-wrote the script with Arslan. The film is set in the 1980s, when several haemophilic patients contracted HIV. Miraculously, some of them survived, and the film tells the story of one of those who did.

Crowdfunding for PUENTES project AGOSTO

Financing AGOSTO has not been easy, even though we have been selected in prestigious festivals such as Cannes, San Sebastian, Amiens, this is still a co-production between Costa Rica and Cuba, who are financially challenged in the film funding support. This is why we are calling for a Crowdfunding, so that together we can make AGOSTO happen.

Movie Plot: August 1994. Like every summer, Carlos (13) wanders around Gibara with his friend Mandy; and Elena with whom he  is secretly in love. Hidden in a house in ruins he finds a couple in rags; they want to escape the island. Soon there are thousands of Cubans taking to the sea in hope of a way out, and in town a crowd goes wild. For Carlos nothing will ever be the same.

What do we need the money for?

With this collective funding we want to achieve the goal of completing the required budget for shooting AGOSTO. The budget for shooting amounts to $100,000; we have managed to raise $80,000 and we would need to raise at least $20,000 more to secure our shooting.

How are we going to use the money?

The money we manage to collect thanks to your contributions, is going to be spend in actors’ fees, food, transportation and art. All of this is vital to carry out and complete the project successfully.
The power of Crowdfunding is that if you like a project and you support it, it's like buying the ticket to the cinema before the movie is made. We can decide the type of cinema that we want to see.

GOOD PITCH EUROPE: RETURNS TO THE NORDIC COUNTRIES - SWEDEN!

Good Pitch Europe returns to the Nordic countries in May 2016, this time to the Swedish capital, Stockholm. BRITDOC is calling out to European filmmakers working on social and environmental justice film projects to apply by the December 1st deadline. What's the big idea behind Good Pitch? Take a look at this page on the Good Pitch website for a grounding on what is (and what isn’t) a Good Pitch film, what the opportunities are, and what other films have walked away with. We're looking for films which tackle a national or global issue, with something important to show us about the world or ourselves. We welcome films of any style - personal, observational, essays, presenter-led, verite... Projects can be at any stage from early production to completion and even early festival circuit (although rough cut stage is ideal), and they should be 60+ minutes in length (although we welcome plans to make shorter versions).

Apply for Good Pitch Europe 2016 here: https://goodpitch.org/events/gpeu2016

RETURN TO FINLAND: IMPACT PRODUCERS LAB

In preparation for May’s Good Pitch Europe, BRITDOC will be returning to the delightful surroundings of Hameenlinna in Finland for an Impact Producers Lab from January 13th-16th 2016.

Both in the US and Europe more funds are now available to pay for 'outreach and engagement' to ensure films hit their target audiences. However, there is a shortage of professionals to handle this work. Just as films have producers to manage the creative and financial process from script to screen, some films now need specialised impact producers to take the film from completion to impact.

At BRITDOC we’re helping to train up this new generation, and this winter we are looking to select eight individuals from Europe who are either doing this work, or ready to step into this role.Anyone from the European Union eager to learn more about how to use your film as a tool for social or environmental change can apply. We are looking to work with established professionals from the worlds of film, campaigning, journalism, politics and marketing and PR.

Ha (Union Investment Partners, KR), will work with the participants on their financing plans and strategies and present the financing landscape in Europe and Asia.

Furthermore, they will be able to participate at the SAFF Conference, a one-day event bridging the gap between investors and producers, educating audiences on the creative and business sides of film financing. Top speakers from Asia and Europe will address the main topics around coproduction and financing between Europe and Asia. Find below the list of speakers and topics.

TIES THAT BIND is organised by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Audiovisual Fund, EAVE, Udine Far East Film Festival and Southeast Asian Audio-Visual Association (SAAVA). TIES THAT BIND is supported by the Creative Europe - MEDIA sub-programme of the European Union, and ScreenSingapore.

Speakers and topics at the SAFF conference:

Crossing Continents: Guide to Structuring a Successful East-West Co-Production: The different funding mechanisms, cultural sensibilities, and work processes between East and West can be double-edged swords. They can create a minefield of difficulties for the aspiring filmmaker, or provide a host of opportunities for learning, exchange, and commercial rewards. Christophe Bruncher (EAVE TIES THAT BIND) and Chan Gin Kai (Southeast Asian Audio-Visual Association (SAAVA) & Silver Media Group) will provide valuable insights into their respective regions’ media ecosystem and how successful East-West co-productions can be structured.

Europe: An Insight into European Film Finance: Meinolf Zurhorst (ZDF/ARTE), Paolo Vidali & Alessandro Gropplero (Fondo Audiovisivo FVG, IT) and Thierry Jobin (Visions Sud Est, CH) will elaborate on how European producers have built an industry by navigating their co-productions through treaties and festivals to consolidate their financing.

Southeast Asia: Overview of Southeast Asian Film Financing: Cash is king in Southeast Asia’s film financing landscape as public money remains scarce in the region and private money continues to be poured into funding entertainment products in this part of the world. But progress is hampered by the lack of strong distribution entities and an overreliance on film festivals to travel beyond Asian shores. Sridhar Sreekakula (Barking Cow Media Group), Zainir Aminullah (Ideate Media), Jessel Monteverde (Abracadabra), Allen Jordan (Goshen Group), Kevin Balhetchet (Hub Media Group) and Dato’ Kamil Othman (National Film Development Corporation Malaysia - FINAS) will discuss on the trends and future of how and what films will be funded in future.

Meet the Financiers: what are film financiers looking for, and how do you structure packages that appeal to them? The following financiers, Chan Pei Ling (Starlight Media Consultants), Mohan Mulani (Surya Ventures), Chan Gin Kai (Southeast Asian Audio-Visual Association (SAAVA) & Silver Media Group), Samuel Y. Ha (Union Investment Partners), Chieko Murata (Sony Pictures Entertainment) and Leon Tan (DragonSlate Media), will advise how you can you be creative in structuring your financing strategy, and offer funders maximum safety nets through pre-sales, timetables, insurances and bonds, and rewarding early backers.

Understanding Distribution and Festivals: Achieving Critical Acclaim and Commercial Rewards: Benjamin Illos (Programmer, Cannes Film Festival - Director’s Fortnight), Thomas Nam, (Network of Asian Fantastic Films - NAFF), Paolo Bertolin (Programmer, Venice Film Festival), Frédéric Corvez (UDI - Urban Distribution International), Dhruv S Sinha (Reliance Entertainment & Phantom Films) will demystify the numbers games in film sales and recoupment, clarify the ever evolving sales market and bring light to the trends and developments in the festival circuit.

Marketing and Distribution in a Global Context: Patrick Frater (Variety) and Cheryl Boone Isaacs (Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) will address the evolving landscape of marketing and distribution in independent films, and the many educational and outreach programs the Academy provides and produces.

The following producers and professionals were selected for TIES THAT BIND 2015:

MR. ZHANG BELIEVES directed by Jiongjiong Qiu and produced by EAVE graduate Lihong Kong, recounts 30 years of China’s 20th-century history through the story of Mr. Zhang Xianchi and the interacting forms of theatrical fiction and autobiographyBorn in a nationalist Kuomintang family in the 1930s, Zhang was a progressive young “leftist” and Communist Party supporter but after the founding of the New China in 1949, he was dubbed a counter-revolutionary “rightist,” a public enemy, and jailed in 1957.

The project was developed at Ties That Bind in 2013 by producer Lihong Kong: "When Qiu Jiongjiong handed me the script, I didn't know where to start, since although this is his fourth film and he is well known in China both as an artist and a talented film director, he is still a newcomer on the international scene. I was very lucky to be able to participate in the TTB-EAVE Coproduction Workshop with the project. During this period, the project gradually matured and the production skills I learned helped me to find the necessary funding.  Thank you, TTB-EAVE!."
