  • DUELLES by Olivier Masset-Depasse, producer: EAVE graduate Jacques-Olivier Bronckart is in production. The psychological thriller is based on a book by Barbara Abel, it brings together two remarkable Belgian actresses, Veerle Baetens and Anne Coesens. DUELLES takes place in Brussels, in the early 1960s. Alice and Céline live in two adjoining middle-class houses that are identical to one another. They are the definition of best friends, like their eight-year-old sons. This almost perfect harmony is turned on its head the day that Alice witnesses the accidental death of Céline’s son Maxime, powerless to stop it. Blinded by suffering, Céline blames Alice for failing to do everything in her power to save her son. And it all falls apart between the two friends. Produced by Versus Production, the director’s faithful companion throughout his endeavours, and co-produced by Haut et Court, Savage Film, RTBF, VOO and Be tv, with the participation of Canal+ and Ciné+, and support from the CCA, the VAF, Wallimage, screen.brussels, the Tax Shelter, Eurimages and the MEDIA programme. The first ever Bulgarian-Japanese co-production has Ties That Bind graduate Kiki Sugino as lead actress. The screenplay, co-written between Avramov and Dimitar Stoyanovich, is based on a short story by the writer Miroslav Penkov. It centres on Georgi (Ruscen Vidinliev), a Bulgarian man living in Canada, and his Japanese wife Yuki (Kiki Sugino). Their troubled marriage may be salvageable if they have a child, so they travel to Bulgaria for its cheaper IVF procedures. While visiting the countryside, they are involved in a tragic accident that claims the life of a Gypsy child. The tragedy and its consequences will lead Georgi and Yuki to seek answers regarding their future together and their true reasons for wanting a child. The Bulgarian National Film Centre provided support. The film was shot last autumn over six weeks in locations including Sofia and Plovdiv, but mostly in several villages in the Bulgarian countryside — including Izvor, a secluded Gypsy community from which the team also hired extras and special extras. The film’s DoP is Torsten Lippstock. Post-production is expected to wrap in autumn.

  • DER UNSCHULDIGE by Simon Jaquemet, producer: EAVE MW graduate Jonas Katzenstein is in post-production. With his latest film, Jaquemet confirms his interest in cutting and nonconformist subjects. He looks at the free churches (Freikirchen), more specifically the link that brings followers together under one and the same roof. DER UNSCHULDIGE attempts to give us a portrait of a religious community through the personal story of a women who suddenly finds herself facing her own past. Will her love for Jesus prove stronger than her feelings? An atypical and engaging subject that takes us on an emotional rollercoaster. Production is being handled by young Zurich-based company 8horses (which Jaquemet is part of) in partnership with German company Augenschein Filmproduktion. The film is being supported by the Swiss Confederation, Zürcher Filmstiftung, SRF, Teleclub, Arte Germania and ZDF.

  • HEADS AND TAILS by Nicolae Constantin Tanase, producer: EAVE graduate Anamaria Antoci is in post-production. The screenplay, written by T?nase together with Raluca M?nescu. Lauren?iu, a man waiting for his brother to come back from abroad. During an altercation in a club, Lauren?iu receives a hard blow to the head. He refuses to be hospitalised and barely manages to get back home, desperate to confess something to his brother, whose arrival has been delayed. The film shows his experiences over the next day, but also glimpses of his past, and everything is put into context by the possibility that this may be Lauren?iu’s last day. The movie was shot in October 2015, with additional shooting days at the end of 2016. The project received support as a short film from the Romanian National Film Center and a co-production grant from the Czech Film Fund. Nicolae Constantin T?nase says the film was inspired by a news item in the Romanian press. Intrigued by how the event was covered in the media, he and his writing partner wanted to explore the idea of perception. As for the decision to make a feature instead of a short film, the director says that following improvisation exercises with the actors, he “started to realise that time is a crucial factor in understanding the protagonist’s drama and how he got there”.

The EAVE masterclasses will be given by EAVE graduate and group leader Roshanak Behesht Nedjad and EAVE film finance expert Linda Beath:

  • Adaptation of Books – Fiction and Non-Fiction from the point of view of Coproductions by Roshanak Behesht Nedjad – In Good Company (Germany)

What is required when you adapt a book into a film in an international setup? Starting from which rights you have to acquire and for how long – and how they are split among the respective partners over to the time it needs to develop a script suitable for international coproductions.

What are the ingredients needed to finance adaptations. How can a coproduction be structured so that it becomes synergetic for both the producer and the author of the book, and how long does it usually take to finalise the film. What is the part a publishing house/an author can play during development, financing, production and launch and release of the film.

An overview about adaptation of books in coproductions.

  • Adaptation of Books – Financing Development and Production by Linda Beath – Ideal Filmworks (Italy)

Time.  Money.  Producers.  Books.  How they work together to create good cinema.

A detailed discussion of the financing of a film, from its development stages, through to the elements involved in packaging the film for production and its marketing for the release to the audience.

Development expenses and how film producers cover them:  the timeline from optioning books and ideas, through the various stages of scriptwriting, often takes four years, sometimes even longer.

Development changes to pre-production, a high cost-high risk stage, when the film is readied to show financiers: national and local funders, television broadcasters, co-producers. national distributors, international sales agents and, increasingly Video on Demand platforms.

Production and post production can take a year and is the most expensive stage for a producer.   Financing budgets and financing plans vary widely so there will be high-medium-low examples of ways producers pay for cinematic adaptations of fiction and non-fiction books.

Finally, the release costs of a film are generally covered by distributors and international sellers.  An illustration of how money comes back to a producer following local releases and sales.
