Nordisk Film & TV Fond backed five new feature films and documentaries in December. Three of them are produced by EAVE graduates.

  • PUENTES project KILLING THE DEAD by Hugo Giménez, producers: PUENTES graduates Gabriela Sabaté and Alexa Rivero is in development. After having received production funding by the Berlinale World Cinema Fund (WCF), the project has also been supported by the Cinémas du Monde production scheme.

  • NOBODY LIKES ME by Tomas Weinreb and Petr Kazda, producer: EAVE graduate Guillaume de Seille is in development. The film tells the story of Sara, an attractive 29-year-old single woman, who works at the army headquarters in Prague. While constantly surrounded by strong young men, she has not found a partner yet. When she meets the gallant and graceful Martin, she is fascinated by fim, but when she wants to take their relationship to a deeper and physical level, Martin shies away. He is hiding a deep secret. The film is produced by Czech production companies Black Balance and love.Frame, as well as France’s Arizona Productions and the postproduction studio Spoon and Bontonfilm from the Czech Republic. The Czech Film Fund gives development support.

  • FIRE NEXT TIME by Mati Diop, producer: Interchange graduate Judith Lou Lévy starts shooting in March. Written by Mati Diop and Olivier Demangel, the story is set in a working-class suburb of Dakar that stretches along the Atlantic coast, dominated by a futuristic-looking tower that is about to be officially opened. The construction workers have not been paid for months, so they leave the country via the ocean, in search of a brighter future. Among them is Souleiman, the lover of Ada, who is betrothed to another. Several days later, a blaze ruins the young woman’s wedding and mysterious fevers start to take hold of the local inhabitants. Little does Ada know that Souleiman has returned. Produced by Interchange graduate Judith Lou Lévy and Eve Robin for Les Films du Bal, FIRE NEXT TIME is co-produced by Arte France Cinéma, Cinekap (Senegal) and  Frakas Productions (Belgium). The feature, which has been pre-purchased by Canal+, TV5 Monde and Ciné+, is being supported by the CNC’s advance on receipts, Senegal’s FOPICA fund, La Francophonie’s Image Fund, the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and Eurimages. The seven-week shoot will take place from March until early May 2018 in Dakar, Senegal.

  • BRITT-MARIE WAS HERE by Tuva Novotny, producer: EAVE graduate Nicklas Wikström Nicastro is in pre-production. The plot: A woman in her sixties, Britt-Marie lives in a miserable little town. She can’t stand disorganisation, and she wants everything to happen in accordance with her own mindset. She seems quite awkward socially, and her helpful suggestions are usually wrongfully interpreted as criticism. Britt-Marie still hides her imagination and dreams from everyone and one day decides to change everything – starting by divorcing her unfaithful husband of 40 years, taking new chances in life and starting from scratch. Maria von Heland and Øysten Karlsen are writing the script based on the best-selling novel by Swedish author Fredrik Backman. Pernilla August is playing the lead role. BRITT-MARIE WAS HERE is a Swedish-Norwegian co-production by Nicklas Wikström Nicastro and Gustav Oldén (SF Studios), with John M Jacobsen (Filmkameratene). The shoot is planned to start by April or May in Gothenburg, and the local release is expected by the end of December.

THE COUNTRY shooting now

  • POWER by Matyas Prikler, producers: EAVE graduates Katarina Krnacova and Viktoria Petranyi is shooting. The film is a Slovak/Czech/Hungarian co-production and stars the Hungarian director and actor Kornel Mundruczo. The story follows a well-established politician who gets involved in an accidental death while hunting. Suddenly the media starts to lead an uncomfortable investigation, suspecting him of the killing. Slovakia‘s MPhilms is producing in coproduction with Negativ from the Czech Republic, and Hungary's Proton Cinema. Slovak Audiovisual Fund supported the project. Producers are still seeking a Belgian or French co-producer to get involved.

  • EDEN by Agnes Kocsis, co-producer: EAVE graduate Oana Giurgiu is in production. Written by the director, EDEN is a special love story. It is about a woman in her late thirties who is allergic to everything; therefore, she lives in total isolation. Produced by József Berger for Mythberg Films, EDEN is being co-produced by Oana Giurgiu for Romanian outfit Libra Film, with the involvement of Alain Berliner for Belgian firm WFE. The feature, which is being backed by the Hungarian Film Fund, the Hungarian tax incentive scheme and the MEDIA Programme’s development support, is being filmed until late February, with five additional days scheduled for May. Principal photography is taking place in Mafilm Studios, in Budapest and at various locations in the Hungarian countryside.

  • THE COUNTRY by Grimur Hakonarson, producer: EAVE graduate Ditte Milsted is shooting. The story follows Inga, a middle-aged cattle farmer who is forced to stand on her own two feet after her husband dies in a car accident. Starting a new life, she will also be forced to fight against the injustice that rules her corrupt countryside community. THE COUNTRY is an Icelandic-Danish-German-French co-production. Netop Films is teaming up with Denmark’s Profile Pictures, Germany’s One Two Films and France’s Haut et Court. The film has received the support of the Icelandic Film Centre, the Nordisk Film & TV Fond, the Danish Film Institute and SR Fernsehen/arte. Shooting is planned to start in late February.

EAVE project ROJO now in post-production

  • EAVE project ROJO by Benjamin Naishtat, producer: EAVE graduate Barbara Sarasola-Day, co-producers: EAVE graduates Ingmar Trost, Marleen Slot finished shooting. The plot: Argentina during the mid 1970s: a wave of unprecedented political violence begins to unfold. But this would seem, at least on the surface, to have little effect on the arid, dull, small town where Dario, a fifty-year-old well-known lawyer, is leading a placid life with his family. The ordinary course of things is interrupted by fate when one night Dario gets into an argument with a bald man. Dario resumes his daily routine. Until one day, a private detective in search of the bald man appears in the small town. The film is supported by Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, World Cinema Fund, INCAA, IBERMEDIA, CNC, NL Film Fund + Hubert Bals Fund.

  • I AM FRANK by Metod Pevec, producer: EAVE graduate Danijel Hocevar is in post-production. Pevec’s sixth feature film tells a story of two brothers, who are as dissimilar as if each of them came from their own corner of the divided Slovenian society. Frank is a barstool apostle, subscribing to atavistic remainders of communist ideas and socialist values. Brane, on the other hand, is focused on personal success and adapted very successfully to the liberal capitalist circumstances. Once upon a time they played in the same band and loved the same woman. Had it not been for their father and an unusual heritage, they might have remained brothers. I AM FRANK by is produced by Danijel Ho?evar through Vertigo in co-production with RTV Slovenija, Serbia’s Backroom Production and Macedonia’s Trice Films and Small Moves Films. The Slovenian Film Center, Film Centre Serbia and Eurimages support the film.

  • ABOVE MAN, THE WOMAN SOARS by EAVE graduate Tudor Giurgiu, producer: EAVE graduate Bogdan Craciun is in post-production. The project is a co-production between Giurgiu’s Libra Film, Tito Clint Movies (Spain) and Evolution Films (Czech Republic). The story, based on the novel Closeness by Romanian author Marin Malaicu-Hondrari, follows Adrian, a Romanian poet who arrives in Spain. Without any papers, he starts working as a night watchman. His life changes forever when he meets Maria, a guitar player in a jazz band. Shooting in the Spanish cities of Córdoba, Seville and Candás finished in November 2017.

15 producers gather during 4 days to discuss their company structures, management practices and new business models together with high-profile industry experts. 

In immersive role-playsgroup work, individual coaching and through an interdisciplinary approach, the EAVE+ workshop will tackle the business side of running a film company.

Top-notch business and management coaches will explore topics such as cashflow management, leadership, company strategies, negotiation with financiers and partners, distribution models and revenue streams, and raising finance from investors.

EAVE+ will take place during April 4-8, 2018 in Luxembourg.

FEW DAYS LEFT TO APPLY: TIES THAT BIND 2018!

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS: February 1, 2018 // 

TIES THAT BIND is the leading training programme for European-Asian co-production. It is targeted at European & Asian producers, 10 of which will be selected with a feature film in development for the workshop.

We also welcome applications of other European professionals interested in working with Asia (sales agents, financiers, distributors, festival programmers, co-production market representatives) or European producers without project. 5 of them will be selected to be an active part of the group.

Daily group work sessions are the core of TIES THAT BIND and we are delighted to announce the appointment of our new group leaders, Bianca Balbuena (Epicmedia Productions, Philippines) and Jonas Weydemann (Weydemann Bros., Germany). They will guide the participants during the group work sessions, where they will discuss and analyze each others’ projects.

TorinoFilmLab launches TFL Extended - TV Series call!

Deadline for applications is March 9, 2018

TorinoFilmLab is excited to present a new opportunity for International professionals: a 4-day-long residential workshop aimed at developing the fundamental techniques and skills to work on a TV series project!

TFL Extended – TV Series is the first training initiative open to all professionals, without any form of selection. Candidates must register on-line: their participation will be confirmed according to the number of seats still available.

The workshop will be held at Turin (Italy), from 06th to 09th April 2018. It aims at implementing expertise and knowledge to create TV series concepts and acquire a depth understanding of markets, audiences and broadcasters by combining individual and group sessions, case studies and master classes.

The participants will benefit from TFL’s know-how and learn from high-profile trainers, including established head writers, story editors, showrunners and commissioning editors from all over the world.

DOK.Incubator: Applications are now opened!

DEADLINE: January 31, 2018

Submit your rough cut to dok.incubator and you can be selected with your team (director, producer, editor) to the three one-week residential sessions of the workshop.

The first session will take place in the Czech Republic in April 2018, the second one in Slovakia in June 2018 and the third one will be in Sweden in September 2018.

Czech and Slovak filmmakers can apply for a regional mentoring programme in the spring 2018.

dok.incubator is an international workshop supporting directors, producers and editors with late-stage documentary projects.

SERIES MANIA: THE CALL FOR PROJECTS IS NOW OPEN !

Deadline: February 23, 2018

Submit your project to the pre-selection of the European Project and Talent Forum (2-4 May 2018).

15 projects will be selected. One project from the Drama Series Days sidebar of the Berlin Film Festival will also be included on an out-of-competition basis.

The producer of the best project will be awarded a €50,000 prize for development by a jury of professionals.

Donate to the EAVE Alan Fountain International Scholarship Fund

A scholarship has been set up to honour the memory of Alan Fountain, former Head of Studies and President of EAVE, who passed away in 2016. Its goal is to enable one producer from outside the EU to participate in all three sessions of the EAVE Producers Workshop each year.
