It is the third film to feature the characters of inspectors Vincke and Verstuyft, who rose to fame thanks to the national and international success of The Alzheimer Case and Dossier. The three movies are adaptations of crime novels written by Flemish author Jef Geeraerts. Once again, inspectors Vincke and Verstuyft are faced with a series of horrific murders, which they will have to get to the bottom of with the help of one of the killer’s surviving victims. That is, unless this victim, who appears to hold great sway over Verstuyft, leads them further from the solution.

  • THE WILDNESS by Guérin Van De Vorst, producers: EAVE graduates Andrea Boussiou, Benoit Roland has begun shooting. The film depicts the personal journey of Ben, a 28-year-old offender in the midst of an existential crisis. Ben spent three years behind bars after a hold-up, and while he was there, he converted to Islam. Now that he’s out, what he wants most of all is to re-establish contact with his son, Samir. But Samir gave up waiting for him a long time ago, and Nadia, his ex-wife, no longer trusts him. Mustapha, his new “guru”, convinces him that he will never find his place in this society, thus intensifying his feeling of injustice. Ben tries his best to follow the norms and principles imposed on him by Mustapha, when one day he meets Lucie, who does nothing to help him adhere to them... Between rehabilitation work and minor repeat offences, Ben will fight hard to resist hatred, re-establish ties with his son and rediscover his dignity as a free man.

The film, based on a short story by Slovak writer Frantisek Svantner, is set in the small mountain village of Piargy on the Slovak border in 1939. The producers are still finalising the budget and have applied for a grant from the Macedonian Film Fund and are seeking a Ukrainian coproducer. The film, which is being shot in black and white, will have a 35-day shooting schedule.

Upcoming deadlines

LIM 2017 | Call for applications now open

Launch of the new European platform for project development of limited budget feature films

Deadline for applications: 14th December 2016, 12:00 p.m. CET (noon)

About LIM

What if lowering the cost of films was a trigger for more creativity and a more in-depth filmmaking? And this without putting always the cost-reduction effort on the filmmakers’ and production teams’ shoulders… What if the issue was to write scripts within cost constraints, and make it a highly creative and stimulating game for writers and directors?

Who can apply

  • 23 core participants, 16 film projects of limited budget feature films selected each year from all over the world
  • Writers and writer-directors, already known either for their short films or first feature films, wanting to work through the prism of limited budget feature film production (between 100.000 and 500.000 euros)
  • Open to 1st, 2nd and 3rd feature film projects, as well as to artists coming from theatre, documentary and visual arts.
  • Emerging European producers (story editors trainees) wanting to strengthen their ability to follow the script development of feature film projects within a low to micro budget frame.

NB: The working language of all LIM workshops, meetings and events is English; thus, a good knowledge of English is essential in order to participate.

LIM’s content

Development work, during a period of 8 months from March to October 2017, supervised by 4 very experienced script-consultants (all of them being writers in activity) as well as low to micro budget specialists (line producers, first AD, etc.)

3 one-week workshops in residency in small villages in three different parts of Europe (dates are subject to change):

> Flanders — 5-12 March 2017

> Transylvania — 5-13 June 2017

> Brittany — 1-8 October 2017

In between each workshop: individual online follow-up with script-consultan. tEvery year, LIM will also provide to participants two events (one in Transilvania International Film Festival at mid-term of the scheme in June, and one on-line in October) enabling them to present their projects to European producers and film-professionals. More than 100 film professionals from all over Europe and beyond will be invited to be part of the live event or follow the on-line presentations and masterclasses.

LIM’s goal is to generate the creation of a European network of professionals working around limited and very limited fiction feature film, thus triggering both coproductions, new funding, distribution and broadcasting opportunities.

PITCHING DU RÉEL 2017

Application is open until December 15, 2016

The Pitching du Réel at the Doc Outlook – International Market (DOCM) / Visions du Réel is one of the most renowned co-production forums for feature-length creative documentaries. It offers the participants the opportunity to discuss the content and form of their project and to find out whether the project stands a chance on the market and what market that would be. It encourages international co-productions and helps to finance outstanding documentary projects addressing an international audience.

Selection criteria

We are looking for 15 individual, fresh and unique high-quality documentary projects, that combine artistic ambition with passion for the subject and commitment to the protagonists. We are interested in presenting projects within the great diversity of the cinéma du réel. The project should be intended as a creative feature-length documentary with theatrical potential with a director and producer attached.

The main criteria for selection are the creative and artistic quality of the project as well as the viability and the track record of the directors and/or producers. We are interested in projects by experienced as well as by new directors, who should have at least directed short films. The producer may have successfully worked in her/his national market and now want to work with European and international partners. Experience in international co-production is appreciated but not a pre-condition.

  •  The project must already be well developped and have (basic) funding in place (viability).
  •  The project and subject must be adapted for international co-production and financing, have potential in international markets and address an international audience.
  •  The project should be new and not have already gone around all the potential financial partners and other festivals or markets.
  •  The director as well as the producer attend the event.

Organisation

The Pitching du Réel will take place during the Visions du Réel Festival International du cinéma Nyon and the DOCM (21–29 April 2017), from Tuesday 25 April to Thursday 27 April 2017.

Application deadline

For producers with a project: the online registration form must be completed and the visual material uploaded by the 15 December 2016. The selected projects will be notified in February 2017.

EAVE projects in the race for EUROPEAN DISCOVERY – Prix FIPRESCI and BEST SCRIPT at the EFA

With an impressive record of 33 films produced and co-produced by EAVE producers recommended for a nomination in the European Film Awards 2016 competition, 14 films have made the final cut with whopping 22 nominations across all categories.

Among the nominations are 2 projects developed at the EAVE Producers Workshop!

The Finnish-German-Swedish co-production THE HAPPIEST DAY IN THE LIFE OF OLLI MÄKI was developed at the EAVE Producers Workshop 2013 and is now competing for the EUROPEAN DISCOVERY – Prix FIPRESCI!

The film directed by Juho Kosmanen, produced by EAVE graduate Jussi Rantamäki and co-produced by EAVE graduate Nicklas Wikström Nicastro has been sold to 20 European territories, the USA, Canada and China by sales agent Les Films du Losange.

THE HAPPIEST DAY IN THE LIFE OF OLLI MÄKI has travelled to festivals around the world and scooped, among others, the Un Certain Regard award in Cannes, the Golden Hugo at the Chicago International Film Festival and the Golden Eye at the Zurich International Film Festival. The film is also the Finnish submission to the Oscars 2017 and received the Finnish Achievement of the Year Award by the Finnish Film Producers’ Association.

EAVE graduate Jussi Rantamäki commented that:

"I met my co-producer Nicklas Wikström Nicastro in EAVE 2013, when I participated at the workshops with this project. With Nicklas and our German producers Jamila Wenske and Sol Bondy we made a decision quite early on that EFA Discovery would be one of the biggest goals of the film. Now we are nominated. Hopefully the members will enjoy our film and vote for it"

David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter called the film "a small marvel of impeccable craftsmanship", lauding its black and white cinematography and "faultless and unshowy" performances.

The Polish-Swedish co-production UNITED STATES OF LOVE was developed at the EAVE Producers Workshop 2014 and is competing for BEST EUROPEAN SCRIPT.

The film directed by Tomasz Wasilewski and produced by EAVE graduate Piotr Kobus was sold to 30 territories world-wide by New Europe Film Sales, headed by EAVE graduate Jan Naszewski.

UNITED STATES OF LOVE world-premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival where it won the Silver Bear for Best Script. Further screenings at international festivals in Karlovy Vary, Transilvania, Istanbul Reykjavik, Busan, Vilnius IFF and Valetta Film Festival (Best Director, Best Actress awards), followed.

Recently, the film also won 5 major awards at the Polish National Film Festival in Gdynia – Best Director, Best Supporting Actor And Actress, Best Editing and Best Costume Design).

EAVE graduate Piotr Kobus emphasized that:

"The EAVE Producers Workshop played a fundamental role in developing the script of United States of Love and in securing the co-production with Sweden. I do not think that the European critical and distribution success of the film would be possible without the support of EAVE experts and network."

Stephen Dalton of The Hollywood Reporter remarked that the film "combines stylistic rigor, serious intent and a fine ensemble cast".
