THE GENDARME shows what happened from the point of view of the leader of the team sent by the local Gendarmerie to make sure the disturbance didn’t escalate. EAVE project THE MUTE now in production

  • PASSED BY CENSOR by Serhat Karaaslan, producer: EAVE graduate Serkan Cakarer finished shooting. Written by the director, the story revolves around 30-year-old Zakir, who works in the letter-reading department of a prison located in the heart of Istanbul. His work consists of blacking out the sensitive parts of the letters that the inmates receive and send. Zakir goes through life without much enthusiasm, his prospects for the future being limited in a country where everything is under surveillance. That is, until the day he decides to enrol in a creative-writing course, where he meets Emel, a young woman his own age. When their course teacher asks the class “to write a short story inspired by a photograph”, Zakir steals one of the dozens of photographs he finds in the prisoners’ letters. The one that captures his attention is a family portrait belonging to an inmate called Recep, depicting himself, his beautiful wife Selma and his father in the prison’s visiting room. Zakir’s curiosity is aroused each time Selma visits her husband. Soon, his desire to feed his story and the one that is born from observing Selma come into conflict. The project was developed at a number of writing residencies, such as the Cannes Film Festival’s Cinéfondation, the Jerusalem International Film Lab and the Locarno Filmmakers Academy. It also passed through the Berlinale Talent Project Market, the Paris Coproduction Village, the Mediterranean Film Institute’s “MFI Script 2 Film Workshops” and the Film Development Workshop – Meetings on the Bridge in Turkey. Produced by Serkan Cakarer for Turkish outfit +90 Film Production, PASSED BY CENSOR is being co-produced by Germany’s Departures Film and France’s Silex Films, with support from Eurimages, the Turkish Ministry of Culture, TOY, Bir Film, the Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung and Bac Films.

She introduces him to campaign tactics, and he watches drama and rivalry within the team unfold from the comfort of her side, gradually abandoning his naivety to climb the ladder towards a very strategic position. PITCHING DU RÉEL 2018

Call for projects

Application is open until December 15, 2017

The Pitching du Réel is Visions du Réel's co-production forum for international feature-length creative documentaries. It offers the participants the opportunity to discuss the content and form of their project and to find out whether the project stands a chance on the market and what market it could be. It encourages international co-productions and helps to finance outstanding documentary projects addressing an international audience.

Selection criteria

We are looking for 15 singular and original documentary projects, that combine artistic ambition and high visual quality with commitment for the subject and protagonists. We are interested in presenting a wide spectrum of practices and approaches. The project should be intended as a creative feature-length documentary with theatrical potential, with a director and producer already committed.

The main criteria for selection are artistic quality of the project, its international potential, as well as its financial feasability and the track record of the directors and/or producers. We are interested in projects by experienced as well as by new directors, who should have at least directed short films. The producer may have successfully worked in her/his national market and now want to work with European and international partners. Experience in international co-production is appreciated but not a pre-condition.

  • The project must already be well developped and have (basic) funding in place (feasibility).
  • The project and subject must be adapted for international co-production and financing, have potential in international markets and address an international audience.
  • The project should be new and not have already gone around all the potential financial partners and other festivals or markets.
  • The director as well as the producer must attend the event.

Organisation

The Pitching du Réel will take place during Visions du Réel, Festival international de cinéma Nyon (13–21 April 2018), from Tuesday 17 April to Thursday 19 April 2018.

On Tuesday afternoon (2 pm – 6 pm), we expect the project teams to participate in a training workshop (monitoring and pitch preparation on a collective and individual basis). The tutors are the moderators of the pitching sessions and experienced professionals. In the evening, there will be a welcome reception, providing a networking opportunity.

On Wednesday 18 April, the whole day and Thursday 19 April until 4 pm, the teams of the 15 selected projects will present their projects to tailored potential co-production and co-financing partners: TV commissioning editors, producers, distributors, funds, foundations, contemporary art curators etc. The structure is articulated around three phases: Each team will have a time slot of 7 minutes, including the visual material (teaser). This public presentation will be followed by discussions (20 min.) of each project at five round tables together with about 10 potential partners and financiers – so, in total, the projects will be commented by at least 50 professionals approximately. The decision makers may request additional 15 min. individual meetings with the project teams, prearranged or organised at site by the Industry team. There will be an exclusive Pitching du Réel reception on Wednesday evening.

Over the two days of Pitching du Réel, those project teams who are not yet running or have already passed their round table presentation will have time to observe the discussion of the other projects. Besides the arranged meetings, there will be many opportunities for informal acknowledgements alongside the Pitching, during the coffee breaks, meals and evening receptions.

The Pitching du Réel will end with a reception on Thursday 19 April at 4 pm.

The selected projects will be published and sent by e-mail to the potential partners registered for the event before the Festival. During the Festival, it will be available in printed form for the Pitching du Réel participants.

A list of the invited co-production/co-financing partners in attendance as well as the individual timetable for each participant will be available two weeks before the Festival. The producers send us a secured link to a previous work by the director which will be made accessible to the potential cooperation partners only.

How to Apply?

Projet submission is open to anyone but the attendance in the event is for registered participants and invited professionals only.

For the requested details of the application please check the online form. Please fill it in English. Additional material as treatment, dossier etc., you may add in French, German, Italian, Spanish. The director’s note and visual concept as well as the producer’s note are essential elements in our decision. Do not forget to send us the global budget and financing plan.
