PUENTES projects KILLING THE DEAD & USPATAN in pre-production
The Estonian Film Institute supports feature film productions and minority co-productions in its first sessions of 2018. Among them are:

The Film Fund Luxembourg has announced the recipients of its latest round of funding, after the meetings held in early February. A total of 19 new audiovisual projects, including fiction features and short films, documentaries, animated titles and TV series receive Funding.

- THE STORY OF MY WIFE by Ildiko Enyedi, co-producer: EAVE graduate Jonas Dornbach is in development. An adaptation of the novel of the same name written in 1942 by Hungarian author Milán Füst, THE STORY OF MY WIFE introduces us to Jacob Störr, a hard-working Dutch sea captain. One day, he makes a bet in a café to marry the first woman who enters the place – and who should stroll in but Lizzy. Later, Störr's investigation to find out whether his wife is cheating on him or not brings him to the limits of life and death. Inforg-M&M Film together with Germany’s Komplizen, France’s Pyramide Productions and Italian outfit Dorje Film are producing the film. Backing comes from the Hungarian National Film Fund. Shooting is planned for next year in Budapest, Hamburg, Paris and the south of Italy.
- PUENTES project KILLING THE DEAD by Hugo Giménez, producers: PUENTES graduates Gabriela Sabaté and Alexa Rivero is in pre-production with shooting planned for April. Production companies are Sabate Films (Paraguay), Altamar Films (Germany) and Zona Audiovisual (Argentina). The film receives production funding from the Berlinale World Cinema Fund (WCF) and gets support by the Cinémas du Monde production scheme.

- PUENTES project USPANTAN by César Diaz, producer: PUENTES graduate Géraldine Sprimont is in pre-production. Guatemala nowadays: Ernesto, son of a political missing person, works for a Foundation that searchs and exhumes the corpses of the missing people left by the dictatorship. Through the search for the remains of his father, he'll unearth family secrets to discover his true identity. Produced by Need Productions (BE), Perspective Films (FR), La Casa de Produccion (GUA), the film received production support by Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, Cinema du Monde and Eurimages. Shooting is planned for May in Guatemala.
- PUENTES project DOGS IN ANARCTICA (aka AURORA) by Marcel Rasquin, producer: PUENTES graduate Claudia Lepage is in development. The story of sexual awakening between a boy and a woman in a forgotten and isolated beach town is co-produced by Kiko Martinez’ Nadie es Perfecto
- LIFE THROUGH A DEAD MAN’S EYES by Jo Baier, producer: EAVE graduate Serge Bierset is in development. Zodiak Belgium is teaming up with American producer René Asch’s Berlin-based Films in Motion to co-produce the feature film about an aging Nazi concentration camp guard trying to evade capture by U.S. authorities. The story follows an escaped 84-year old Nazi SS death camp guard who, suspecting he’s in danger of being apprehended by U.S. authorities for war crimes, assumes an unlikely identity and hides in the most improbable place. Ash and Bierset are aiming to finance LIFE THROUGH A DEAD MAN’S EYES through the German Federal Film Board and Germany’s regional funds with support from the Belgium Tax Shelter and that country’s funds.

- GUT GEGEN NORDWIND by Vanessa Jopp, producer: EAVE graduate Jonas Dornbach is in production. The plot: Leo receives emails in error from an unknown woman called Emmi. Being polite he replies, and Emmi writes back. A few brief exchanges are all it takes to spark a mutual interest in each other, and soon Emmi and Leo are sharing their innermost secrets and longings. The erotic tension simmers, and it seems only a matter of time before they will meet in person. But they keep putting off the moment – the prospect both excites and unsettles them. And after all, Emmi is happily married. Will their feelings for each other survive the test of a real-life encounter? And if so, what then? The film is a Komplizen Film production with Erfttal Film and Deutsche Columbia Pictures. Funded by the German FFA, Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, DFFF, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg.
- THE HARVESTERS by Etienne Kallos, producer: EAVE graduate Sophie Erbs, Konstantinos Kontovrakis, Mariusz Wlodarski is in production. The French-Greek-Polish-South African co-production by Cinéma Defacto, Heretic, Lava Films and Spier Films gets support from the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation, CNC – Aides aux Cinemas du Monde / Institut Français, Fondation Gan – Prix Opening Shot, French-Greek Coproduction Fund CNC/GFC, ant the Polish Film Institute.
- HOW TO SELL A WAR by Rudolph Herzog, co-producer: EAVE graduate Vladimer Katchavara, executive producer: EAVE graduate Aleksi Bardy is shooting in Georgia. The film tells the story of an over-confident PR consultant who must create a fake news story that claims a war is still raging in Georgia in order to make sure the London-based event she is promoting, the Piece of Peace global charity event, is a huge success. HOW TO SELL A WAR is being produced by Dublin-based Film and Music Entertainment (IRE), co-producers are Georgia’s 20 Steps Productions and Kinomedia/GF. Financing comes from the UK’s Quickfire, Helsinki-based IPR.VC and Creative England, as well as the Georgian National Film Centre and the tax credit scheme of Enterprise Georgia. Production will take place on location in Georgia and Dublin.
- ISAAC by Jurgis Matulevicius, co-producer: EAVE graduate Kuba Kosma is shooting. The film has been more than five years in the making, and only a couple of shooting days are left to finish in Ukraine in April, although editing has already begun. The plot: In 1941, Lithuanian activist Andrius Gluosnis kills a Jew, Isaac, in the Lietukis garage massacre. Years later in Soviet Lithuania, Gluosnis’ film director friend Gutauskas returns from the USA to make a film about the massacre. While researching the details for the film, he finds out that his friend was not just a passive bystander. Gluosnis’ life begins to crumble during the preparations for the film, his guilt torturing him until he understands that he has to make peace with the victim. The co-production between Lithuania, Ukraine and Poland is a psychological drama composed of long takes. ISAAC is being produced by Stasys Baltakis of Lithuanian company Film Jam, and co-produced by Ukraine’s Esse House and Kuba Kosma’s Takfilm. The Lithuanian Film Fund is supporting the project.
- THE PLAY by Alejandro Fernandez, producer: EAVE graduate Guillaume de Seille is shooting. The black-and-white drama with comic elements follows the young director of a theatre in a Czech town. He attempts to stage a personal and ambitious play, Phaedra by Euripides, based on Miguel de Unamuno’s rendition from 1930 and set against the 1991-1992 privatisation of Czech enterprises. In the process, he faces myriad professional hurdles and personal crises. The co-production between Chile, the Czech Republic and France is funded by a grant from the Jeonju Cinema Project and the Chilean Film Fund.
- EAVE project PSYCHOBITCH by Martin Lund, producers: EAVE graduates Ruben Thorkildsen, Guido Schwab, Marcel Lenz, Ditte Milsted is shooting. The plot: Marius is a middle school pupil, tormented by the very thought of not being a success. When the teacher teams him up with Frida, the outsider of his class, so begins a tumultuous relationship that will truly test Marius’ character and status.
- EIA’S CHRISTMAS AF PHANTOM OWL FARM by Anu Aun, producer: EAVE Marketing Workshop graduate Laura Talvet, Maie Rosmann-Lill is in production. The film follows 10-year-old Eia, whose Christmas holiday takes an unexpected turn after being brought to a mysterious farm in rural Southern Estonia. She follows her heart to rescue an old primeval forest, helps two lovers find each other, and is destined to unwrap her family's well-kept secret. The adventure film for the whole family aims to bring the viewers closer to nature. The film uses two directors of photography; director of photography Heiko Sikka will film all of the acted scenes, and nature cinematographer Ants Tammik will film the documentary nature scenes of forest animals and birds. Luxfilm and Kinosaurus Film are coproducing funding comes from Estonian Film Institute’s Estonia 100 film programme. Shooting, which kicked off in January, takes place in Southern Estonia with some scenes shot in the capital Tallinn. The filming wraps in March.
EAVE project BOYS WHO LIKE GIRLS
- ONE LAST DEAL by Klaus Harö, producer: EAVE graduate Kaarle Aho is in post-production. The film is about an elderly art dealer who is desperate to find a real treasure before he retires, while trying to reconnect with his neglected family. ONE LAST DEAL is produced by Helsinki-based company Making Movies with support from the Finnish Film Foundation.
- IRON SKY: THE ARK by Timo Vuorensola, producer: EAVE graduate Tero Kaukomaa is in post-production. According to an official statement, the latest chapter of the series will follow two Chinese university-dropout audiophiles who decide to decode a cryptic voice message transmitted from the Moon. As it turns out, they will have to fight to save humanity as they face the mystical society of the Illuminati. The third instalment in the space Nazis franchise managed to raise funds through at least 500 backers from 30 different countries, although its €20 million budget is fully funded by China, making this the first co-production between Finland and China. IRON SKY: THE ARK is a Finnish-Chinese-Canadian co-production by Iron Sky Universe with China Film Group Corporation, Shandong Jiabo Culture Development Co, Pan Pan Pictures and Longevity International Enterprises. The film started shooting four months ago at Wanda Studios in Qingdao, China, and is currently wrapping in Finland.
- LET ME FALL by Baldvin Z, co-producer: EAVE graduate Jukka Helle is in post-production. The film tells the story of 15-year-old Magnea and her eye-opening encounter with Stella. Stella's no-holds-barred lifestyle drags them both into a world of drugs, which brings serious consequences for each of them, and their relationship. Twelve years later, their paths cross again, and a reckoning between them becomes unavoidable. Produced by Reykjavik-based firm Icelandic Film Company in co-operation with Solar Films (Finland), the feature has received financial support from the Nordisk Film & TV Fond and the Icelandic Film Centre.
- EAVE Marketing Workshop project THE DEPOSIT by Asthildur Kjartansdottir, producer: EAVE graduate Eva Sigurdardottir is in post-production. Gisella is a 40-year-old woman who rents out spare bedrooms in her lavish Reykjavik home to two immigrant women, Maria and Abeba. When Gisella loses her job as a journalist, she becomes desperate and begins to write a freelance article based on the lives of the women living in her home. An arrangement that begins well soon develops into Gisella’s worst nightmare as she loses control of her home and her sanity. The film is produced by Reykjavik-based firms Askja Films and Rebella Filmworks, and has the support of the Icelandic Film Centre.
- EAVE project BOYS WHO LIKE GIRLS by Inka Achté, produced by EAVE graduate Liisa Juntunen is in post-production. The Mumbai-set character-driven documentary follows three men as they each try to find a way to be a good man in a deeply patriarchal Indian society undergoing slow but certain reshaping of gender roles. The film is co-produced by Christian Falch (Gammaglimt Norway), with support from the Finnish Film Foundation and the Norwegian Film Institute.
- THE DISTANCE BETWEEN ME AND ME by Mona Nicoara and Dana Bunescu, producer: EAVE graduate and Romanian National Coordinator Ada Solomon is in post-production. The documentary about the Romanian poet Nina Cassian (1924-2014) was shot during the last year of Cassian’s life. The film is based on an idea by Ada Solomon and is produced by Romania’s Hi Film Productions and Sat Mic Film from the U.S., in co-production with Romanian Public Television (TVR) and with the support of the Romanian Film Centre and the Creative Europe - MEDIA Programme of the European Union. The project was also financially supported by Orange România, Altex România, Cine Globe, Avon România, Renault Commercial Roumanie.

Call for Applications: PUENTES – Europe / Latin America Co-Production Workshop 2018
PUENTES is targeted at Latin American & European producers with projects, 10 of which will be selected for the workshop. We are also open to receive the applications of other European professionals interested in working with Latin America (sales agents, financiers, distributors, festival programmers, co-production market representatives) or European producers without project. 4-5 of them will be selected to be an active part of the group.
The DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS is March 12, 2018.
Upcoming deadlines
Films submissions for the 29th edition of FIDMarseille are open until March 31, 2018 - for films produced in 2018
AND - for films produced in 2017 not yet registered.
All films produced after January 1st, 2017, are eligible. Before submitting your film, please read carefuly the Rules and Regulations and the instructions below.
The festival receives each year almost 3000 films for the selection. These figures are constantly growing. We thank all the directors and producers who trust us by sending their films to the FIDMarseille selection.
In order to give the best care to the films and to improve our selection process, submissions are now charged with a fee.
Two forms are available :
- One for shorts (under 60 minutes), whose fee is 10€
- One for feature (equal or more than 60 minutes), whose fee is 25€
Please note that the length of the film does not concern the selection but only the submission.

DocsBarcelona main industry activity
WHERE AND WHEN: Thursday 24th and Friday 25th of May at CCCB.
It the Speed Meetings 40 projects will be selected to have one to one meetings of 15 minutes with international financiers.
This year, as novelty, 5 of them will also be presented at the Public Pitch.
In 2017 there were 37 financers, 40 projects and 463 meetings took place.

If your project is an interactive documentary, web-based, cross-platform or a convergent media project, submit for the Interactive Pitch.
4 interactive projects will be presented in front of a selection of financers, especially interested in this kind of projects, and accredited professionals.

Pitch your Latin American documentary project

6 projects from Latin America will be presented in the Latin Pitch in front of a selection of financers, especially interested in this kind of projects, and accredited professionals. To apply, the project must have a minimum of a 60% of Latin American production and the director must have Latin-American nationality.
