- FOR THE VICTORY! by Valentyn Vasyanovych, producer: EAVE graduate Volodymyr Yatsenko is in development. The film tells the story of a man over 50, for whom everything is falling apart – but slowly, not all at once. He tells it from the point of view of his family having left, settling somewhere near Vienna. So he remains here alone. His father is old and has to be looked after during the war, and he has an adult son who does not want to grow up, but wants to sit and study computer games. He’s got a whole heap of problems, and at the same time, he feels this terrible helplessness. He cannot go to fight, but he wants to support his country somehow. And he talks about his friends with whom he has worked before. Vasyanovych is one of 48 Ukrainian filmmakers to have received a development grant for his project from the Ukrainian Film Academy, with support from Netflix.

EAVE project THE HERD in post-production
In production
- ZE by Lkhagvadulam Purev-Ochir, producer: Interchange graduate Charlotte Vincent and EAVE graduate Denis Vaslin is shooting her feature debut. Written by the director, the script centres on Ze who’s in his last year of high school; he is 17 years old and a shaman. One day he meets Marla, a delicate but distrustful young woman, who has come to visit Ze’s spirit because of her illness. For Ze, it is love at first sight. When Marla rejects his affection, Ze confronts for the first time the limits of spirituality, love and his own evolution… Ze is a sober portrait of teenage life in today's Ulaanbaatar. Produced by Katia Khazak and Interchange graduate Charlotte Vincent for Aurora Films, ZE is co-produced by Guru Media (Mongolia), EAVE graduate Filipa Reis from Uma Pedra no Sapato (Portugal), EAVE graduate Denis Vaslin from Volya Films (The Netherlands) and in association with 27 Films Production (Germany). It is supported by the Aide aux Cinémas du Monde fund of the CNC, the fund for French-Portuguese cinema co-productions, the NFF+HBF Co-production scheme (which brings together the Netherlands Film Fund and the Hubert Bals Fund), the HBF+ Europe: Minority Co-production support (another programme initiated by the Hubert Bals Fund), the World Cinema Fund of the Berlinale, and Arte. The feature film has also benefited from the support of the ARRI, the MEDIA programme, the screenwriting assistance programme of CICLIC (Centre-Val de Loire region), and the Hubert Bals Fund. Winner of the Open Doors Hub Production Grant in Locarno in 2020, the project has also won two prizes at the Torino Film Lab: a CNC special mention in 2019, and a Post-production Award in 2021. Filming will take place from 24 October to 2 December.
- THE WHITE FLASH by Laura Hermanides, producer: EAVE graduate Floor Onrust is shooting her debut fiction feature. The movie tells a true family story rooted in a very authentic, almost forgotten working-class environment in Amsterdam, pushed out of the city centre to the low-rise outskirts. The script focuses on 42-year-old Rick, who, after a long and torturous history of psychiatric problems, has finally received a confirmed date for the requested and much-desired humane termination of his life, which has been full of suffering. The question hovering over this difficult situation is whether his parents will be able to let him go, out of their love for him. The project was developed with the support of the Netherlands Film Fund in 2020 and applied for production support in 2021. The Amsterdam Fund for the Arts granted it, while the rest of the financing came from a crowd funding campaign, support from Swiss distributor Innovative EYE and from Family Affair Films itself.
- LES MEUTES by Kamal Lazraq, producer: EAVE graduate and group leader Diana Elbaum is shooting. Written by Kamal Lazraq himself, the story thrusts us into the working-class suburbs of Casablanca where Hassan and Issam, father and son, are trying to get by day-to-day by way of petty crime or jobs for the local mob. But one night, they’re asked to kidnap a man… LES MEUTES is produced by Saïd Hamich Benlarbi on behalf of Barney Production, in co-production with Moroccan firm Mont Fleuri Production and Belgian outfit Beluga Tree. Supported by the CNC’s Aide aux Cinémas du Monde fund, the Institut Français, the Gan Film Foundation, the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie’s Film Fund for French-Language Films, the Doha Film Institute, the AFAC (Arab Fund For Arts And Culture), the Wallonia Brussels Fund and via an advance on receipts from the Moroccan Film Centre, this feature film will be shot in Casablanca and its surrounds.
- AND by Yorgos Lanthimos, producer: EAVE graduate Ed Guiney is shooting. The plot of the new project, which remains under wraps for the time being, is based on a script developed by Element Pictures and Film4, and penned by the Greek helmer himself and his regular collaborator Efthimis Filippou. AND is being produced by US-based Searchlight Pictures, Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe for Ireland’s Element Pictures, Kasia Malipan and Lanthimos himself. British firm Film4 is co-financing the picture.
In post-production
- EAVE project THE HERD by Milko Lazarov, producer: EAVE graduate Veselka Kiryakova is in post-production. As per his previous works, Lazarov has chosen a remote setting for his film, with the villages of Karlukovo and Kamenno Pole - situated in the decaying north-western reaches of Bulgaria - serving as his main locations. The story focuses on Ali, his daughter Tarika, and her grandmother Chrysula, who are leading an isolated life in a village hut near the border. Tarika suffers from a rare bone malformation known as "butterfly wings", an abnormality passed down through the maternal line. Despite having lived in the area for a long time, enjoying a peaceful and harmonious relationship with their neighbours, the family have always been seen as strange. And then, out of nowhere, the animals in the village are struck down by disease, the river dries up, and sick boy Nikola dies after befriending Tarika. Driven by xenophobia and superstition, the villagers become increasingly suspicious and decide to deal with this unusual family themselves. Produced by Red Carpet, with 42film (Germany) and Amour Fou Luxembourg (Luxembourg) acting as co-producers, the film is funded by the Bulgarian National Film Center, MDM, ZDF/arte, Film fund Luxembourg and Eurimages.

WEMW opens the second round of calls for the EAVE Slate and Inspirational Labs!
A few weeks to go before the deadline of the first round of calls dedicated to projects in development and works in progress, and it’s already time to launch a second round of WEMW programmes focusing on career boost, acceleration in strategic company development and reinforced company sustainability.
Starting from today and until November 20, European producers have the chance to apply to the second edition of EAVE Slate, an innovative programme that will offer consultancies on how to build a successful company slate and strategic company planning to companies that are developing a slate of A/V works.
Until November 20, producers coming from Europe, Canada and Latin America will also be able to apply to one of our new Inspirational Labs, a series of mini-workshops meant to stimulate selected participants to develop new content and explore new business models. Run in collaboration with leading training programmes and international partners, the six Labs will offer a deeper insight on drama series content, animation production, impact & outreach strategy, online distribution and co-financing, film genre production and the 2023 WEMW spotlight territories.
Not sure about what event suits you better?
Take the brand new QUIZ to find your way to WEMW 2023!
All EAVE Slate & Inspirational Labs at a glance!
EAVE Slate
EAVE Slate will select up to 8 companies that are developing a slate of A/V works and will combine the EAVE group work method with a series of plenary sessions and individual consultancies focusing on strategic company planning, potential risk evaluation and company diversification. The main goal is to define realistic short-, mid- and long-term strategies for the selected companies and to outline how to pick the right projects to include in the company slates.
ANIMA SPIRIT | Animation Inspirational Lab
in partnership with CEE Animation Workshop
ANIMA SPIRIT is designed as an entrance door for experienced producers and film companies coming from live action or documentary, wanting to discover the exciting and complex world of animated film production. The lab will combine group work, individual consultancies, and lectures on financial and creative aspects of animation production.
Anima Spirit Lab is hosted by the CEE Animation Workshop team and led by experts Jelena Popović (NFB, Canada) and Martin Vandas (MAUR Film, Czech Republic). The experts team will be accompanied with additional experts from Latin America and announced soon.

COLD OPEN | Drama Series Inspirational Lab
in partnership with MIDPOINT Institute
COLD OPEN will once again select international producers with a background in feature films who aspire to shift to drama series content. The programme will be led by MIDPOINT Institute's tutors and experts, and will include lectures, group sessions, and individual consultations, aiming to supply hands-on skills in the development, production planning, and financing of serialized drama content.
Find out more HERE.
THE IMPACT ZONE | Outreach & Impact Inspirational Lab
in partnership with ESoDoc
ESoDoc's lab at WEMW will focus on the design of impact campaign strategies. The team from Think-Film Impact Production - the impact media organisation with specialist expertise at the cutting-edge intersection of film and social change - will lead a guided co-creation workshop, in which selected fiction and documentary projects develop impact loglines, goals and key action steps. The main objective is to enhance participants’ understanding of the value of impact and what it can achieve for their productions and society, introduce them to a range of tools they can use to design and deliver policy impact, and give participants specific project advice and guidance.

THE ON DEMAND ECOSYSTEM | VOD Inspirational Lab
curated by Silvia Cibien & Agustina Lumi
The VoD Inspirational Lab is a unique opportunity to better understand the diversity of the VOD landscape and the dynamics behind the on-demand ecosystem. Through a series of lectures, case studies and masterclasses, sharing data and know-how on the current VoD market and players, with a focus on Europe and LATAM, the Lab will help the participants to plan ahead the online distribution strategy and co-financing of their content, answering to the audience demand.
WEMW FOCUS | East & West Inspirational Lab
in partnership with the 2023 East & West countries in focus (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine & Spain, Portugal, Latin America)
An all-encompassing journey through the main funding, distribution and market opportunities offered by the 2023 WEMW spotlight territories. All lectures, individual consultancies and exchange sessions will feature leading key players from these industries and will tackle a wide range of topics.
GENRE RULES | Fantastic Film Inspirational Lab
in partnership with the Fantastic Film Forum of the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival
Genre Rules is meant as a hands-on guide to the inner workings of genre cinema. Even though genre movies today are more popular and marketable than ever, producing them may not prove so easy. The genre film industry is highly specialised, with key players, industry events and subgenres of its own, and constantly changing trends. This lab is designed to provide an in-depth overview of this sector and will focus in particular on the best strategies to develop your project and effectively place it in the market. The workshop targets independent producers and new talents with an international attitude, who wish to improve their skills and become acquainted with the genre film landscape.
SELECTION & LOCATION
The final selection of the Labs will be primarily based on the applicant’s profile and motivation, and all selected participants will have the extraordinary opportunity to physically join the full programme of WEMW.
Please note that due to the restricted capacity of our venue, there will be a very limited number of on-site WEMW accreditations and therefore we encourage all professionals keen to join on-site in Trieste next January to apply to one of our activities.
* The participation fee for the EAVE Slate and all Inspirational Labs will be waived for all possible Ukrainian selected participants.
INFO DAY
If you wish to get more info about the Inspirational Labs and the EAVE Slate, please join our INFO DAY on November 2 from 10.00am to 11.00am (CET timezone). To confirm your attendance and get the direct link to the INFO DAY, you need to register by writing to inspiration@wemw.it no later than October 31.
We look forward to being once again inspired all together next January!

CHANGE - Co-production training course: selection announced
We are proud to announce the second round of CHANGE - a collaboration with EAVE, Europe’s leading training, development, and networking organisation for producers, CPH:DOX, the world leading documentary film festival supporting independent and innovative filmmaking, and IMS, International Media Support, promoting journalism and documentary film to strengthen the capacity of media to reduce conflict, strengthen democracy and facilitate dialogue.
The partners’ goal being to increase equality and access to the international film market, the programme wants to stimulate inter-regional co-production and to connect projects, filmmakers and producers from the European Eastern Partnership countries (EaP) with international film professionals gathered annually at CPH:DOX.
The line-up of selected projects covers a wide variety of current topics spanning from the historical nuclear disarmament of Ukraine and its consequences, Abkhazian and Ukrainian refugees in Georgia, the ongoing non-violent resistance in Belarus, a female filmmaker's gaze in the patriarchal Azerbaijani society on the gradual disappearance of the Caspian Sea, and a year of the current war in the life of four generations of women from Mariupol.
The first workshop of CHANGE - Co-production training course in Tbilisi, Georgia in October-November 2022 will combine masterclasses and group work sessions, as well as individual meetings for the 8 selected producer-director teams. The same participants will continue to work together in the second workshop in January 2023 in one of the countries in the region. The programme will culminate with a third module and presentation of the projects to the international industry at CPH:DOX in Copenhagen in March 2023.
The selected projects are:
- A Bit of a Stranger, prod. Anna Kapustina, dir. Svitlana Lishchynska, Ukraine
- Boxes from Georgia, prod. Tiko Nadirashvili, dir. Gvantsa Meparishvili, Georgia
- How Long is the Echo, prod. Vahan Khachatryan, dir. Merri Mkrtchyan, Armenia
- Kartli, prod. Ketevan Kipiani, dir. Tamar Kalandadze and Julien Pebrel, Georgia

The objective of the programme is to improve the participants’ skills in defining the content, core and goals of the film projects; in regional and international collaboration and co-production, financing structures and production environment; and in preparing for the encounter with the international market.
As EAVE CEO Kristina Trapp states: “The first edition of CHANGE has not only shown how relevant the programme is, but also how urgent it is to help filmmakers in the region express their voices so that it can be heard in the rest of the world. We are very glad to continue the programme - together with our partners IMS and CPH:DOX - and contribute to the public debate for social, political and cultural change.»
“We were thrilled to see such a strong field of applications from the involved countries and are now looking forward to starting the collaboration with 8 new producer-director teams. It is such a privilege to take part in this. Together we will continue to strengthen the documentary film industry in the region and further add to the results coming out of the first edition of CHANGE”, says Henrik Underbjerg from IMS.
Tereza Simikova, Head of Industry & Training, CPH:DOX says: “The war raging on European soil reminds us all how critical it is to hear the voices of our neighbours on the Russian - and European - doorstep. We are grateful that these filmmakers and their work can help us all understand the challenges and opportunities for our common, democratic, and hopefully soon also peaceful future.”

Participants announced for Second Creative Producer Indaba
Fifteen diverse producers from around the globe have been selected to participate in the second Creative Producer Indaba (CPI) which takes place from 7 November this year online for a week, at the Atlas Workshops (Marrakech International Film Festival) 14 - 17 November and at International Film Festival Rotterdam (25 January – 5 February 2023) in person.
Creative Producer Indaba is presented by Realness Institute, in partnership with EAVE, International Film Festival Rotterdam’s industry initiative IFFR Pro, and the Marrakech International Film Festival’s Atlas Workshops; with the support of IEFTA, Projeto Paradiso and The StoryBoard Collective. The Indaba aims to bring together a hive-mind of producers who are either in the process of developing a film project, or want to collaborate on an African film project, in order to develop their entrepreneurial and leadership expertise, foster their creative skills, and create long-lasting and significant networks.
Selected participants include African producers Marion Isaacs (South Africa), Matheus Mello (Brazil/Mozambique), Bramwel Iro (Kenya), Sawsan Yusuf (Egypt) and Zoe Ramushu (Zimbabwe/South Africa) who have active film projects in development and are looking for international producers and co-financiers. Their film projects include a heist suspense series, two feature documentary dramas, and two feature dramas.
Film professionals from Africa - Caroline Kganyago-Ralefeta, Lucia Meyer-Marais and Tracey-Lee Rainers (South Africa), Mia Bittar (Sudan) and Pedro Soulé (Cabo Verde) who have significant stakes in the African film marketplace, with an interest in the development of film projects and co-producing with Africa were selected.
Finally Bartholomeu Luiz (Brazil), Ellen Havenith (Netherlands), Flavia Zanon (Switzerland), Kesmat El Sayed (Egypt/Germany) and Temilola Adebayo (Nigeria /Canada) are all international producers looking to finance projects in Africa, with a view to collaborating on African projects. Luiz is attending through the partnership with Brazilian foundation, Projeto Paradiso.
“We are truly excited about this year’s strong cohort for the Creative Producer Indaba,” says Mehret Mandefro, Director of Development and Partnership, Realness Institute. “These producers represent a diverse range of voices and interests with solid or growing networks from Africa and beyond. Following our highly successful CPI last year we have seen how these intense programmes can provide opportunities for filmmakers to move forward with their ideas and projects.”
Kristina Trapp, CEO at EAVE says “We can no longer work in isolation, or in silos, the world has changed and collaboration is key. The CPI creates a solid and safe space for producers to find solution-driven strategies through sharing skills, ideas and networks. We believe the Indaba will also once again help to connect people in a significant and meaningful way.”
“Worldwide we see the success of these kinds of incubators, where professional development and knowledge-sharing has had a profound effect on producers, who often work tirelessly in isolation with few opportunities to benchmark their skills and share their insights,” says Inke Van Loocke, Head of IFFR Pro . “We look forward to seeing what sparks are ignited at the Indaba this year, and the impact this will have on the projects in development, and others.”
“We look forward to meeting this cohort at Atlas Workshops, as producers gather to hone their skills and share ideas,” says Thibaut Bracq, Head of Atlas Workshops (Marrakech IFF). “It is our vision to work side by side with a new generation of Moroccan, Arab and African filmmakers, and to create a space for exchange between international professionals and regional talents – and hosting the Creative Producer Indaba participants will certainly help achieve these goals.”
The programme is packed with workshops, discussions, case studies, and one-on-one meetings with mentorship focussed on the development of projects that will take them through the whole scope of skills needed to get a film into production and reach audiences. Group Leaders, Mehret Mandefro and Diana Elbaum, and Story Expert, Mmabatho Kau, will be mentoring these producers, with a host of film industry experts in support.
Elias Ribeiro, Head of Studies and Executive Director of the Realness Institute says “We have a brilliant line-up of experts this year who will be meeting the producers including Femi Odugbemi, Katriel Schory and Dayo Ogunyemi, and IFFR Festival Director Vanja Kaludjercic adding their superb skills, insights and guidance during this time.”
The Creative Producer Indaba is made possible through the support of Documentary Africa, International Emerging Film Talent Association (IEFTA), Institut Français d'Afrique du Sud, the Brazilian foundation Projeto Paradiso, and The Storyboard Collective in partnership with European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs (EAVE), International Film Festival Rotterdam and Marrakech International Film Festival (Atlas Workshops).
