Screen Ireland and Film Fund Luxembourg

Screen Ireland and Film Fund Luxembourg have opened applications for a €120,000 Ireland-Luxembourg co-development fund targeted at female and non-binary filmmakers. Film and TV projects involving producers from Ireland and Luxembourg will be supported with funds of up to €40,000. The contribution will be split evenly between Screen Ireland and Film Fund Luxembourg. The scheme was first announced in 2019 and has a special emphasis on projects which engage with “new, emerging, and underrepresented voices”. Assessing the submitted projects will be a selection committee composed of representatives from Film Fund Luxembourg and Screen Ireland and potential external experts. Applications will close October 2.

Film Fund Luxembourg and Screen Ireland announce Co-Development Fund for Female and Non-Binary Filmmakers now open. Film Fund Luxembourg and Screen Ireland – the national agency for the development, production and distribution of Irish film – are delighted to open applications for the Ireland/Luxembourg Co-Development Fund at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Originally announced in 2019, the Co-Development Fund is an incentive for feature film and television projects written and/or directed by filmmakers who identify as female or non-binary. The initiative aims to improve the representation of female and non-binary filmmakers across the screen industry, in both Ireland and Luxembourg. €120.000 will be allocated to the fund for 2023 on a 50/50 basis from both funding bodies. Applications are now open, and the closing date to submit projects is Monday, 2nd October, 2023.

EAVE project WILD ANIMALS is in production now

In production

  • SAINT X by Pablo Agüero, producer: EAVE graduate Jean-Yves Roubin receives support by the Walloon Regional Audiovisual Investment Fund Wallimage. Filming of the large-scale international co-production kicked off in March. The French author and aviator is played by Louis Garrel and the film will follow his epic quest to find his best friend, an airmail pilot (played by Vincent Cassel) who has disappeared in the Andes Cordillera. Produced by Cheyenne Fédération (France) in co-production with A Single Man Productions (France) and Frakas, the movie also stars German actress Diane Kruger.

  • MALDOROR by Fabrice Du Welz, producer: EAVE graduate Jean-Yves Roubin is in production. The film dives deep into the traumas of contemporary Belgium centred on a young recruit in a small police station. Paul Chartier, the newcomer, devotes himself to "Operation Maldoror,” set up in the greatest secrecy to keep an eye on a notorious criminal, as two girls have just disappeared. Faced with the dysfunction of an uncoordinated and unstructured police system, Chartier suffers the failure of the operation and sinks into obsession. He then embarks on a solitary crusade against a tentacular evil that fractures him from every side. The action takes place in 1990s Belgium, in the Charleroi region. Through the journey of its hero — which brings up themes dear to the director, notably the hold of evil — the film is an opportunity to explore the recent history of the country, the marks that these cases of sexual delinquency have left on the population, and the accounts to be settled regarding their chaotic handling. MALDOROR is produced by Jean-Yves Roubin and Cassandre Warnauts for Frakas Production. The film has received support from the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, RTBF, VOO and Be Tv, Proximus, Wallimage, screen.brussels and the Tax Shelter in Belgium, and Canal+, France 2 Cinéma and SofiTVCiné in France. Filming is scheduled to last from 4 May to 28 June in Belgium.

In post-production

  • MR.K by Tallulah Schwab, producer: EAVE graduate Leontine Petit is in post-production. The title character Mr. K is a travelling magician who finds himself in a Kafkaesque nightmare when he can’t find the exit of the hotel he just slept in. His attempts to get out only entangle him further with the hotel and its curious inhabitants. “What I have been exploring in MR. K is the way we try to mould reality into something we can control and understand. How we protect the status quo by surrounding ourselves with others who share our view, making the world bite-size and relatable,” said Schwab. The feature is being co-produced by Lemming Film (Netherlands), A Private View (Belgium), The Film Kitchen (Netherlands), Take Film 53 (Norway) and AVRO/TROS (Netherlands). The project has received backing from the Netherlands Film Fund, the Netherlands Film Production Incentive, the CoBO Fund, AVRO/TROS, Creative Europe, LevelK, Eurimages, Screen Flanders, the Flanders Audiovisual Fund, the Belgian Tax Shelter and the Norwegian Film Institute.

  • FAMILIAR by Peter Calin Netzer, producer: EAVE graduate Oana Iancu, co-producers: EAVE and PUENTES graduate Sophie Erbs, EAVE+ graduate Tom Dercourt is in post-production. The screenplay, written by the director with actress-screenwriter Iulia Lumanare, follows Dragos, a film director in his forties who decides to make a movie about his family's emigration to Germany in the 1980s. Because the emigration occurred in suspicious circumstances, Dragos investigates undercover, with help from his former girlfriend, Ilinca. The collaboration brings the two closer together, however, making matters more complicated with Dragos’s fiancée. As he delves deeper into his family's past, secrets come to light, leading to revelations about certain ties with the Secret Service. Trapped in his own story and with his fiancée announcing her pregnancy, Dragos must make a decision that will impact the future of everyone involved. Director Peter Calin Netzer on his approach to writing and directing FAMILIAR: “The film is built with the thoroughness of a detective investigation. Using the present as a tool that makes the past intelligible, my main character, Dragoș, instinctively recreates the mise-en-scène of the past, recreating the love triangle his parents once had formed, leading to a never-reconciled disruption of the family. FAMILIAR is a complex story about our ever-profound search for identity and truth.” The Romanian National Film Center supported the picture, further support comes from Taiwan Creative Content Agency, Taiwan’s International Co-funding Programme, the French CNC and the European Union’s Creative Europe – MEDIA programme. The movie was shot in the summer of 2022, with the team spending two weeks in Germany in August.

  • THE DAMNED by Thordur Palsson, producer: EAVE graduate Conor Barry, co-producers: EAVE graduates Anton Máni Svansson, and Benoit Roland is in post-production. The “tense psychological horror” film follows Eva, a 19th-century widow who is tasked with making an impossible choice when, in the middle of an especially cruel winter, a ship sinks off the coast of her isolated fishing post. Eva and her crew must choose to either rescue the shipwrecked or survive the winter with their last remaining food. Facing the consequences of their choice and tormented by their guilt, the inhabitants wrestle with a mounting sense of dread and begin to believe they are all being punished for their decisions. Speaking about the project, the producers commented: “We could not be prouder of what Thordur and this magnificent ensemble of talent have achieved on The Damned. The Icelandic landscape is a part of the haunted soul of this film. Shooting in the depths of winter in the West Fjords provided physical and creative challenges, and each of those challenges could not have been overcome without the support of our fantastic partners. We are so excited to get this film out into the world.” THE DAMNED is being produced by Emilie Jouffroy and Kamilla Kristiane Hodøl for Elation Pictures (UK), John Keville and Conor Barry for Wild Atlantic Pictures (Ireland), and Tim Headington, Theresa Steele Page and Nate Kamiya for Ley Line Entertainment (USA). Co-producing are Guðmundur Arnar Guðmundsson and Anton Máni Svansson, of Iceland’s Join Motion Pictures, and Benoit Roland, of Belgium’s Wrong Men. Institutional backers include Screen Ireland, Wallimage and the UK Global Screen Fund.

EAVE PARTNERSHIP WITH MARCHÉ DU FILM

EAVE session @ Cannes Producers Club

"Asymmetrical coproductions" by EAVE graduate, group leader and Croatian National Coordinator Ankica Juric Tilic

Date: 14:00-15:00 on May 19th

Asymmetrical co-productions refer to those type of the co-productions that take place between countries with different costs levels, countries that differ in financing capacities, and countries that greatly differ in market size. What does that actually mean and how can you balance asymmetrical co-production in a ‘fair’ and equal way?

Co-Production Night

Date: 20th May at the Plage des Palmes

This is the perfect opportunity to connect with potential co-producers and catch up with representatives from the most important international co-production markets and producer networks. Kick off the night with Co-Pro Markets Catch-Up, where global producers meet up and network over refreshments and bites with partnering organizations. Then join us for the second part of the evening and sing your HEART out with the Co-Pro Night Live Band, featuring the best (and worst!) of 80s pop music!

Access to Co-Production Night is reserved for Producers Network badge holders and by invitation only!

SPOTLIGHT ASIA

The Marché du Film, in partnership with Ties That Bind (organised by Fondo Audiovisivo FVG, EAVE, Far East Film Festival, TAICCA) and Focus Asia, is launching a new international initiative in Cannes titled Spotlight Asia. The program aims to foster more film collaborations between Asia and Europe and will welcome professionals from both continents looking to build and boost their industry networks and creative connections.

The first-ever dynamic program will feature several roundtable discussions, short presentations and networking events throughout the 2023 Marché du Film, taking place in Cannes from 16-24 May.

The collaborative events will zoom in on everything potential co-producers from Europe and Asia need to know to navigate the different levels of working together across all formats, from fiction to animation.

EAVE PARTNERSHIP WITH MARCHÉ DU FILM

EAVE session @ Cannes Producers Club

  • "Asymmetrical coproductions" by EAVE graduate, group leader and Croatian National Coordinator Ankica Juric Tilic
  • Date: 14:00-15:00 on May 19th
  • Asymmetrical co-productions refer to those type of the co-productions that take place between countries with different costs levels, countries that differ in financing capacities, and countries that greatly differ in market size. What does that actually mean and how can you balance asymmetrical co-production in a ‘fair’ and equal way?

Co-Production Night

  • Date: 20th May at the Plage des Palmes
  • This is the perfect opportunity to connect with potential co-producers and catch up with representatives from the most important international co-production markets and producer networks.
  • Access to Co-Production Night is reserved for Producers Network badge holders and by invitation only!

SPOTLIGHT ASIA

  • The Marché du Film, in partnership with Ties That Bind (organised by Fondo Audiovisivo FVG, EAVE, Far East Film Festival, TAICCA) and Focus Asia, is launching a new international initiative in Cannes titled Spotlight Asia. The program aims to foster more film collaborations between Asia and Europe and will welcome professionals from both continents looking to build and boost their industry networks and creative connections.
  • The first-ever dynamic program will feature several roundtable discussions, short presentations and networking events throughout the 2023 Marché du Film, taking place in Cannes from 16-24 May.
  • The collaborative events will zoom in on everything potential co-producers from Europe and Asia need to know to navigate the different levels of working together across all formats, from fiction to animation.
