  • DIRECTIONS aka COMPATIBILITY, directed and produced by EAVE graduate Stephan Komandarev wrapped shooting. Based on real events, the script written by Simeon Ventsislavov and Stephan Komandarev interweaves six contemporary taxi drivers’ stories and a free interpretation of Anton Chekhov’s short story Grief. Komandarev changed the title during the shooting, because he found that DIRECTIONS reflects better the heart, the soul and the true dynamics of the film. Shooting in Sofia took place in November-December 2016 and lasted 24 days. There are roughly six one-frame episodes, some of which go uninterrupted for nearly twenty minutes. Komandarev is producing through Argo Film in cooperation with Stelios Ziannis through Aktis Film Production and Vladimir Anastasov through Sector Film. Bulgarian National Film Center, Bulgarian National Television, the German Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (MDM), the Macedonian Film Agency and Eurimages are supporting. The film will be released in 2017.

TFL launches the FeatureLab

Deadline for applications for the FeatureLab is March 1, 2017

TorinoFilmLab’s latest programme is aimed at screenwriters, directors and producers from all over the world working on first or second works in the advanced stages of development

The TorinoFilmLab kicks off its tenth year with the launch of a new traning and development programme: FeatureLab, which is aimed at creative teams from all over the world working on first and second works in the advanced stages of development.

FeatureLab incorporates two lines of action: FeatureLab - 360 and FeatureLab - audience design. The former provides 360° assistance in the development of projects for teams of screenwriters, directors and producers working on their first or second films, and the latter offers training for audiovisual professionals aimed at developing innovative strategies for involving audiences that move beyond traditional film marketing strategies.

FeatureLab – 360 is open to 10 projects, and is structured in three residency workshops that will take place in June, September and November 2017. The training and development process will conclude with a final presentation of the projects during the TFL Meeting Event in November. The projects will also be evaluated by an international jury and will compete for the TFL’s production prizes and other secondary prizes.

FeatureLab – audience design is also structured in three residency workshops, during which four audience designers will work on two Indonesian projects selected for FeatureLab – 360 (as part of the partnership between TFL and the Indonesian Agency for Creative Economy) to encourage future distribution. The four participants will be presented at the annual TFL Meeting Event.

Producer with a several years’ practice on the local market (i.e. not a student or recent graduate) with a capacity for future professional growth and with ambitions to be active on the European market

At least one realized film (fiction or documentary, mid-length or feature) which has entered theatrical distribution, has been screened at a festival etc.

Previous participations at other workshops is considered an advantage

Eligible countries: EU Member states (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden), Switzerland, Island, UK, Liechtenstein, Norway, Turkey, countries of Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia) and Eastern Partnership countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine) and Russia.

Guest Country of Emerging Producers 2018: Morocco

The programme is divided into three main parts:

Promotion | Various levels of presentation of EP (Evening Show presentation, Meeting with established European producers, Lunch with festival directors etc.) at key European film events.

Networking |Making quick and easy contact with the VIPs of the documentary film industry community (One-to-One meetings, practical attendance at other industry events etc.)

Navigation | Getting oriented in European film industry and institutions (via master classes, case studies and lectures)

PROMOTION

The programme includes a personal presentation of the producers as well as an official presentation to film professionals and press. The Emerging Producers project is accompanied by a specially tailored catalogue. By using a unique design it combines personal profiles and professional backgrounds of each of the producers.

The Emerging Producers are being presented at major film events throughout the year. A reception is traditionally organised in their honour during Berlinale, they are being presented at the Karlovy Vary IFF, and we promote them as the producers worth watching in respective year also through other means, such as citylights or catalogues.

NETWORKING

A fundamental part of the EP programme consists in various forms of informal meetings where people get to know each other and gain easy access to contacts for future international co-operations unlike in official negotiations and e-mail correspondence. However, we are particular about the fact that even the informal meetings have a specific form with a reasonable purpose to fulfil the networking aim.

The individual meetings are planned for carefully selected specific circles of professionals. The aim is to help the producers meet all the important persons in the field of audio-vision present at the Jihlava Industry Programme in the course of the project.

NAVIGATION

In today’s times of rapid technological development and an expanding film market, it is often very hard for a beginning producer to get oriented on the film market and understand how the whole mechanism works. It may take several years for a talented producer to meet the right group of people where he or she can start co-operating, financing and producing his or her films.

The Jihlava Industry Programme is conceived so as to represent a real entrance gate to the film industry with a focus on creative documentary film and its forms overlapping with fiction film and various reality TV formats. It also focuses on the essential branches in the field of distribution and film sales with the aim of making the producers’ way to the desired results easier.

The individual parts of the EP programme create an information cluster to help a beginning European producer get oriented on the market.

Among the experienced tutors that guided our Emerging Producers in the past were Amra Bakši? ?amo, Heino Deckert, Paolo Benzi, Irena Taskovski, Luciano Barisone, Peter Jäger, Sibyl Kurz, Rebecca O'Brien and others.

Tune in for the EAVE LIVE STREAM SESSION: Shake Up in the Digital Marketplace

We are pleased to announce a new live stream session in cooperation with When East Meets West on Tuesday, January 24, from 11:30-13:00 (CET):

EAVE LIVE STREAM SESSION: Shake Up in the Digital Marketplace – by EAVE consultant Linda Beath (IT) on www.eave.org

2017 is shaping up as yet another year of transformation for the digital marketplace for European films. An overview of the current state of internet distribution and what is changing: where is the European Digital Single Market initiative in its long march forward? Has piracy smothered the financial potential for filmmakers short and long term? Will Day-and-Date releasing work in Europe? Is sVoD (read Netflix) abandoning films for TV drama? What’s with documentaries and VoD? Will per film revenues continue to be so low while marketing demands remain so high?

This is a plenary for film producers who can no longer question whether to distribute their films on the internet but only how. And how to make the most of this marketplace for their films financially and with audiences.

The session will aslo be broadcasted on www.cineuropa.org.

Some voices from the previous editions:

«A group retreat for 4 days. What a wonderful breaktime in our daily rushed routine to think together and put in perspective our place and ideas regarding our fast-changing Industry. Beautiful moments of sharing, bonding, exchanging and engaging with each other. Graceful, emotional and magical experience.»

Hengameh Panahi, Celluloid Dreams, France

«EAVE+ provides a safe and informal situation in which participants and experts share their knowledge and emotions within their professional life. Therefore this four days 'deep dive' into film producing motivated and enriched my future as a professional.»

Frans van Gestel, Topkapi Films, The Netherlands

«Exactly what we needed at exactly the right time in terms of some creative Blue Sky thinking about the direction of the company and its growth as we enter into our second decade in business.»

Triona Campbell, Beactive S.A., Portugal

«I thought it was a great four days and served as a real think tank for experienced producers to gain perspective on our changing world.»

Mike S. Ryan, Greyshack Films, USA

«The EAVE+ workshop was extremely useful on many levels - practical information on a range of subjects from promoting films on VoD platforms to how to work on one's resilience in stressful situations to raising private equity and managing those investor relationships. The networking element also really paid off in terms of finding a co-producer with access to a national fund in a country where one of my projects takes place, and that funding application is now underway.»

Natasha Dack, Tigerlily Films, UK

«It was the perfect moment for me and my partner to come to EAVE +, … (the) best moment to take a look… and see how it works for people with (the) same passion, but living and working in a completely different environment.»

Fernando Epstein, Mutante Cine, Uruguay
