EAVE Impact Think Tank
The annual EAVE Impact Think Tank took place on January 18 & 19, and we will delve deeper for the second year into Equitable Approaches to Producing.
Over the course of 1.5 days, we explored innovative strategies for integrating inclusive production practices across all stages of content production — from pre-development to release and distribution. Our collective goal was to create a concise, practical guide for producers, providing actionable recommendations on storytelling, community engagement, crew selection, contracts, team building, and more.
Thanks to WEMW and our generous funders, including the Canada Media Fund (CMF), Telefilm Canada and IEFTA, whose contributions have made this gathering possible as well as the Marché du Film where we aim to present this year's results in May.

Closed-door EAVE IMPACT THINK TANK in partnership with HBF and IMS on Sunday, February 2
Inclusive Coproduction Funding: Practical Steps for Impact
This Think Tank will explore strategies for funders to integrate policies that make inclusive productions more achievable on the projects they finance. Building on the insights shared in the EAVE Impact Think Tank Report on Inclusive Co-Productions, launched at the Marché du Film in May 2024, this session will serve as a focused follow-up for European decision-makers to review and discuss recommendations and align on key actions to undertake collectively. Our collective goal is to determine best practices that funders can implement to make their funding policies and programs more inclusive, particularly for financing co-productions with the Global South and Indigenous or racialized filmmakers in Europe.

LA BALEINE is in production now
In production
LA BALEINE by Sylvère Petit, producer: EAVE graduate Isabelle Truc is in production. Written by Sylvère Petit and Nathan Le Graciet, the story takes us back to autumn 1985. A storm awakens the Mediterranean. A village is devastated, the harvest ravaged. The sea has deposited a whale on the beach. It’s dead and is declared a carrier of disease. With his tractor, his harvest trailer and three kitchen knives, ailing, misanthrope wine grower, Corbac, wants to save the cetacean’s skeleton from a sanitary blast of dynamite. Day and night, his daughter Mathilde sees the biggest of creatures paraded, piece by piece, past the church, the school and the distillery, awakening the villagers’ unconscious minds and stirring up violence. Mathilde knows her father: he’ll see it through to the bitter end… Serge Lalou and Sophie Cabon produce LA BALEINE for Les Films d’Ici Méditerranée, in co-production with Iota Production (Isabelle Truc and Lawrence Absalon) Upside Films, Spain’s Imagic Telecom. Pre-purchased by Ciné+, the feature film enjoys support via a CNC advance on receipts, as well as backing from Eurimages, the Gan Film Foundation, the Occitanie/Pyrénées-Méditerranée region (where filming will unfold until 14 February, with Michaël Capron heading up photography), Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole, the SOFICA companies Cineventure and Cofimage, and Procirep/Angoa. It also benefits from partnerships with the Pelagis Observatory and Paris’ Natural History Museum, and enjoys further backing from Le Groupe Ouest and the Francophone Co-Production Meetings, among other sources.
In post-production
- WASHED AND BURIED by Martin Turk, producers: EAVE graduates Ida Weiss, EAVE MW and FFF graduate Marta Zaccaron is in post-production. The film follows Nadja, a successful 40-year-old lawyer, who returns to her remote hometown to fulfil her late grandmother's enigmatic final wish, making her face with long-forgotten places and encounters, as well as hidden family truths that challenge her perception of the past. Produced by Ida Weiss of Bela Film (Slovenia), the film is a co-production with Marta Zaccaron of Incipit Film (Italy) and Inja Korać of Cobra Chicks (Croatia), with national co-producers RTV Slovenija and Senca Studio also attached to the project. The production is financially backed by the Slovenian Film Centre, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Audiovisual Fund, the Croatian Audiovisual Centre, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Film Commission and Creative Europe – MEDIA. The film was shot on location in Val Canale, Italy. The region is known for its local rituals and traditions, which served as inspiration for the film's story.

Film Independent, WEMW and EAVE announce the first Global Media Makers Residency in Europe for Ukrainian Filmmakers
Film Independent, the nonprofit arts organization celebrating 40 years of the Spirit Awards, announced today, in partnership with the U.S. Department of State, that the first Global Media Makers (GMM) Residency to engage Ukrainian filmmakers will be held January 16-22, during the 15th Edition of When East Meets West in Trieste, Italy.
The residency is presented in collaboration with the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine, the Ukrainian Institute, When East Meets West (WEMW), and the European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs (EAVE).
“We are thrilled to partner with EAVE and WEMW to bring our communities together in an effort to support an incredible group of filmmakers from Ukraine, who are developing compelling stories with a global reach,” said María Raquel Bozzi, Senior Director of Education and International Programs at Film Independent, “The mission of our organizations and our commitment to supporting new independent voices from around the world are perfectly aligned.”
Kristina Trapp, EAVE CEO, added, “We are excited to launch this first partnership. The residency will offer eight amazing producer-director teams and their projects from Ukraine a perfect package: top notch tutoring from the GMM mentors, shared sessions with EAVE SLATE and EAVE IMPACT THINK TANK, and plenty of networking opportunities at the vibrant WEMW market.”
This intensive week-long residency will serve sixteen talented filmmakers, creative producers, and writer-director teams, with fiction and documentary feature film projects in early development, exploring a wide array of issues of social importance from their country. Leading this residency are esteemed U.S. mentors Mollye Asher (Nomadland), Ruth Atkinson (Script Consultant), Karin Chien (Bitterroot), Caroline Libresco (Food and Country), Alix Madigan (Winter’s Bone), Avril Speaks (Jinn), and Alejandro Valdes-Rochin (Menudo: Forever Young). These industry professionals will provide an overview of independent film best practices in the United States, while exploring their relevance in the Ukrainian and European context. Mentors will also delve into development strategies for the projects participating in the program. In addition, this will be a great time for American and European mentors participating in the different programs at WEMW to compare notes and foster opportunities for crosspollination.
“Over the past years the concrete support to the Ukrainian film industry has been one of the key priorities of When East Meets West,” said Alessandro Gropplero, WEMW Director. “Therefore, today we are so happy to expand our mission and goals, and we are delighted to be part of the first GMM Residency in Europe, as we are sure that all these talented Ukrainian selected teams will get precious feedback, meaningful perspectives, as well as new beneficial connections during our market.”
