SÁMI PRODUCERS LAB 2024

International Sami Film Institute and Netflix invite emerging and mid-career Sámi producers to apply for a unique workshop designed by the training organization EAVE.

This program, set to start in October 2024, offers several modules, including a residential session in Guovdageaidnu, Norway/Sápmi, and online follow-ups over a period of six months.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The workshop addresses project development, financing, budgeting, applications, and reporting; co-production, sales & distribution, defining the target audience; and company and business planning.

Program Highlights:

• Skills Development: Enhance your abilities in film development, financing, budgeting, funding applications and reports, co-production, distribution planning, and business strategy.
• Methodology: The workshop will use the successful EAVE methodology, with group work, plenary sessions, and individual consultations. It will focus on real projects to produce tangible outcomes and have concrete case studies.
• Networking: Build lasting professional relationships through our intensive group work and expert sessions.

First module: Residential in Guovdageaidnu

The first module and kick-off are set for Guovdageaidnu, Sápmi/Norway, at International Sámi Film Institutes premises. It will be a four-day program from October 7th to 10th, 2024.

Second and third modules: Online sessions

The second and third modules are half–day online sessions.

2nd module dates: November 21st and 22nd, and November 25th to 29th, 2024

3rd module dates: January 27th to 31st, and February 3rd and 4th, 2025

• Head of Studies: Tamara Dawit (Gobez Media, CA)

Tamara Dawit is an Ethiopian-Canadian filmmaker and Head of Studies for the Access BIPOC Producers Program in Canada. She is an alumna of prestigious programs like Doha Film Institute, Berlinale Talents, Durban Talents, Rotterdam Lab, EAVE, and APostLab. Tamara runs Gobez Media, producing films such as “FORGOTTEN CHILDREN” (2007), “GIRLS OF LATITUDE” (2008), “GRANDMA KNOWS BEST” (2014), “FINDING SALLY” (2020), and “MADE IN ETHIOPIA” (2024). She has received several accolades, including the Doc Institute Vanguard Award and the Gordon Parks Award for Black Excellence in Filmmaking. Tamara is also a 2023 Chalmers Arts Fellow and a 2024 MacDowell Fellow.

• Group Leader: Emile Hertling Péronard (Ánorâk Film / Polarama Greenland, GL/DK)

Emile Hertling Péronard is an award-winning and Oscar-nominated Greenlandic film producer based in Denmark with production company Ánorâk Film operating out of both Nuuk and Copenhagen. In 2020, he launched Greenland’s first production service company, Polarama Greenland, to advance the Greenlandic film industry and pave the way for more Greenlandic screen content. He is the Chair of the Arctic Indigenous Film Fund, a co-Director at ARTEF – the Anti-Racism Taskforce for European Film, the Executive Director of Nuuk International Film Festival, and in 2023, he was awarded the Greenlandic film prize, Innersuaq, for his work. His films have screened at festivals like Cannes, Venice, Berlinale, Sundance, and include Twice Colonized, Music for Black Pigeons, Kalak, and the 2023 Academy Award Nominee for Best Live Action Short, Ivalu.

• Expert on funding/applications & reports/company planning: Petri Kemppinen (P1 Kemppinen, FI)

Petri Kemppinen is a seasoned expert in financing and development with nearly 30 years of experience in journalism, publishing, and the audiovisual sector. He currently serves as a Senior Advisor at the Finnish Impact Film Fund and operates his own consulting firm, P1 Kemppinen. Previously, he served as CEO of Nordisk Film & TV Fond and held roles at the Finnish Film Foundation, YLE, and Helsingin Sanomat. Petri has financed over 150 films and 50 TV drama series, including Palme d’Or winner “The Square” and film festival darlings like “The Border”, “The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki”, “Woman at War”, “Queen of Hearts”, “Worst Person in the World” and renowned TV dramas like Cry Wolf, Paradise, Trapped, Occupied and The Thin Blue Line. He has been a Finnish member of Eurimages’ Board of Management and board memberships at the Swedish Film Institute. He is also a member of the European Film Academy and the European Women´s Audiovisual Network.

HOW TO APPLY

We seek ten emerging and mid-career Sámi producers developing documentary-, feature-, or short film projects.

Applicants should have produced at least one short film or completed a university course on film production (or have equivalent education or work experience in the film or media industry).
