  • LEAVING COPACABANA by Milcho Manchevski, producer: EAVE graduate Marija Stojanovic, is in production. The film is a social thriller-comedy about siblings Malina and Viktor, who steal bronze busts for a living. One day, the heavy bronze head-and-shoulders of a national hero slips out of Viktor’s hands and crushes his foot. When the doctor arrives to treat his injury, he demands sexual favours as payment. That’s when Viktor picks up a heavy manhole cover that was lying around the house. As with all of Manchevski’s films, this one also explores socially relevant issues alongside emotional and artistic themes, such as sibling love. The film tackles loneliness, poverty, corruption, mental illness and a society driven by the privileges of the wealthy. While set in contemporary North Macedonia, it also offers a universal commentary on how people live and connect in today’s world. “This is a film about sibling love and self-sacrifice, about the rich and the poor, the good and the bad, the blind and the seeing. It’s a film about how we live, how we laugh and how we die,” says Manchevski. The feature is a co-production between Banana Film (North Macedonia), Gala Film (Bulgaria), Sense Production (Serbia), the Tirana Film Institute (Albania), Coast to Coast (Italy) and Berkeley Media Group (UK). It was supported by national film funds and private investors from all six territories.

  • THE KIDNAPPING OF A PRESIDENT by Samuli Valkama, producers: EAVE graduate and National Coordinator Finland John Lundsten, EAVE graduates Jakub Kostal and Madis Tüür is in production. The dark comedy is based on an extraordinary true event from Finnish history. The film dramatises a little-known episode from 1930, when a group of far-right military officers plotted to kidnap Kaarlo Juho Ståhlberg, Finland’s first president, who had retired several years earlier, along with his wife Ester. The film tells the absurdly comedic true story of this failed coup attempt in October 1930, led by Lieutenant Colonel Eero Kuussaari. Following a drunken night fuelled by nationalistic resentment against the democratic establishment, a group of poorly prepared officers from the upper echelons of the Finnish army decide to abduct Ståhlberg, who has already retired by that point. The country, still deeply divided after the civil war, is engulfed in political tension and unrest. The plan quickly unravels owing to the conspirators’ incompetence and some unexpected resistance, especially from the president’s stubborn wife, Ester Ståhlberg. The kidnappers inadvertently set off a series of incredible events, an episode whose full, definitive truth remains unknown to this day. The screenplay, co-written by Valkama and producer John Lundsten, who have already collaborated on several other projects, has been in development for over six years. In a joint statement, they said: “When we first looked into the background of President Ståhlberg’s abduction, our initial reaction was astonishment: Finnish officers leaning towards the far right had launched a coup while drunk and forgot about it the next day. The story felt incredibly timely, and the screenplay has been developed carefully and thoroughly. The result will be a black comedy based on historical facts that will surely resonate with our times.” Filming is taking place entirely in the Czech Republic, with Prague standing in for Helsinki’s historical locations. THE KIDNAPPING OF A PRESIDENT is a Finnish-Czech-Dutch-Estonian co-production, staged by John Lundsten and Melli Maikkula, of Finland’s TACK Films, in co-production with Jakub Kostal and Vratislav Šlajer for the Czech Republic’s Bionaut, Rogier Kramer and Laura Bouwmeester for the Netherlands’ Labyrint Film, and Madis Tüür for Estonia’s Münchhausen Films. Financial backing includes support from the Finnish Film Foundation, the Czech Film Fund, the Netherlands Film Fund, the Estonian Film Institute and the Nordisk Film & TV Fond.

  • CONFIRMATION by Darko Sinko, producers: EAVE graduates Vlado Bulajic and Lija Pogacnik is in production. Everybody in a small Slovenian village is getting ready for the annual ritual of confirmation. Among them, there are also three teenage best friends, Mate, Peter and Gaber. When a landslide damages the road leading to the church where the confirmation usually takes place, the locals decide to try to repair it on their own. The preparations for the ceremony also reveal a carefully hidden secret: a package of marijuana under the church organ usually played by cool city girl Veronika. The finding points to the three friends, and once the police get involved, their friendship must overcome a considerable challenge. “We have all experienced disappointment in our friendships, and maybe even caused it for others“, Sinko stated. “Why is that so? Betrayal always comes as a surprise that hurts a great deal, but it can also hide something beautiful and dear – obviously, we lose something that we held as very important.” According to Sinko CONFIRMATION is envisioned as a visually rich movie, with a lot of characters and thick plotting that may head in the direction of irony, the grotesque and even a hint of surrealism. CONFIRMATION is being produced by December, RTV Slovenia serves as the co-production company. The film was financially supported by the Slovenian Film Centre and Creative Europe - MEDIA. Viba Film Studio provides technical support.

  • YOUNG STALIN by Géla Babluani, producer: EAVE graduate Vladimer Katcharava is in production. The script penned by Géla Babluani and the British historian Simon Sebag Montefiore (the author of the eponym bestseller) follows the little-known, stranger-than-fiction early life of Joseph Stalin - street fighter, bank robber and revolutionary - before he became the architect of Soviet tyranny. “YOUNG STALIN is an ambitious film, both in scale and in topic. Once again, 20 Steps, Independent Film Project and Film and Music Entertainment demonstrate that if we unite, we are strong enough to create the best stories in international cinema today”, said Georgian producer Archil Gelovani of Independent Film Project. The film is produced by UK’s Film and Music Entertainment Ltd (F & ME) and Georgia‘s Independent Film Project and 20 Steps, and it is serviced in Romania by Alien Films Entertainment. The producers are Sam Taylor, Archil Gelovani, Vladimer Katcharava, Len Blavatnik, the executive producers are Danny Cohen and Vince Holden, David Zerat and Ilan Amouyal, local producers in Romania are Iuliana Tarnovețchi and Oana Prata, and other producers include Rupert Lloyd. “This is the Stalin you’ve never seen before, not a dry and dusty biopic but the story of the young revolutionary, lover and ruthless outlaw who later became the tyrant. It’s a timeless story about how monsters are made, and why some people follow them”, producer Sam Taylor said. YOUNG STALIN will premiere in the summer of 2026.

Interview with EAVE Producer Signe Byrge Sørensen

Danish EAVE producer Signe Byrge Sørensen has been in the film industry for decades, producing acclaimed documentaries, animated documentaries, and fiction films from around the globe. For example, her EAVE project THE ACT OF KILLING as well as THE LOOK OF SILENCE were both Oscar nominated documentaries, and FLEE was Oscar nominated in three categories: Documentary, International Feature Film and Animated Feature Film. We sat down with her to discuss producing in Denmark, working across genres and cultures, her upcoming projects, and why she encourages young aspiring producers to take part in film training programmes.

EAVE: You participated in EAVE's flagship programme, the EAVE Producers Workshop 15 years ago. How do you see your career development since, in the perspective of time?

Signe Byrge Sørensen: I began working in film in 1998, coming from a background in politics, economics, and international development. My first job was at a small production company called SPOR Media, focused on Africa, Asia, and Latin America, where we distributed films into Europe and co-produced with local filmmakers. I stayed for five years, did my first international co-productions, one from Zimbabwe and later Senegal, and then participated in Eurodoc in 2003. I then joined Final Cut Productions as a full-time producer, working there until 2008. When this company stopped operations, I co-founded Final Cut for Real with Anne Köhncke (also EAVE producer), director Joshua Oppenheimer and editor Janus Billeskov Jansen in 2009 and attended EAVE in 2010.

At that time, I had some experience with co-production in Africa, the Nordic countries, and some also in Europe, but I had not done any fiction yet at all. My project at the workshop was the documentary The Act of Killing, which I had become involved in when I met Joshua Oppenheimer in 2007. EAVE was crucial for my career: before The Act of Killing’s premiere in 2012, I had never had a film in a fiction A-festival. EAVE helped me navigate international sales, distribution, and launch the film. It premiered at Telluride and Toronto, then in Berlin, went to over 200 festivals, won 70+ awards, and marked my first experience with a major Oscar campaign! The work I did at EAVE was real work that led to helping me lay the foundation for experiencing all that.

THE ACT OF KILLING © Final Cut for Real

And then you continued the cooperation with Joshua Oppenheimer up until today.

Yes, we always saw The Act of Killing as one part of a diptych, with The Look of Silence as the other part. Together, they deconstruct the meaning today of the genocide in Indonesia in 1965-66 from two angles: The Act of Killing focuses on the perpetrators, and The Look of Silence focuses on the victims. They are different stories, locations, and situations, but very much two sides of the same coin. We always knew we would release The Look of Silence after The Act of Killing, and actually shot it before The Act of Killing came out, because we weren’t sure we would be able to return there once The Act of Killing was released. We edited The Look of Silence while releasing The Act of Killing, and then premiered it in 2014. It had a similar run: Venice, Telluride, Toronto, about 200 festivals, 70 prizes, and an Oscar campaign as well.

Another milestone in your career must have been the animated documentary Flee. Today you are also doing fiction films, and I am interested in these transitions through genres. Do you still see yourself mainly as a documentary producer?

I see myself as a film producer, and for me, the genre comes from the story. I started in documentary and love it, some stories are meant to be told that way, and I’ll keep doing those. But with Flee, for example, there was a reason Amin Nawabi, the protagonist, couldn’t show his face, and much of the story, his whole experience of fleeing from Afghanistan into Denmark, was in the past, with no archive material. So, animation became the right form. This was a full feature produced by the main producer Monica Hellström (also my EAVE fellow from 2010), Charlotte De La Gournerie and myself, with French, Norwegian and Swedish co-producers involved. It was a huge learning curve for Monica and me, but also a really positive experience. We worked with fantastic young animators who were deeply committed and excited to work on something real, from the documentary world.

At Final Cut for Real, we have always tried to push ourselves, whether it’s animation or even VR, like the piece my colleague producer Marie Kristensen produced that went to Venice. I think that this business is about telling stories, and we need to find the ways of expression that fit the story in the best possible way. As for fiction, we wanted to make a musical, so we jumped into the creation of THE END by Joshua Oppenheimer. That was also a long journey and a big learning process, but very challenging as well as rewarding.

Is it difficult to always learn something new, how a new format works?

It is definitely challenging, but it's also a way of life. There is never a point where you can say, 'This is how we always do it.' You're constantly adapting, learning, and being pushed out of your comfort zone. Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do in film. We learn so much through working with our partners: none of it would be possible without them.

THE LOOK OF SILENCE © Final Cut for Real

Are you relying on the EAVE network, for example, when you choose collaborators?

Yeah, and also on ACE Producers’ and Inside Pictures’ networks, because I have done those as well. I co-produced THE END with Conor Barry, for example, we were in the same group at EAVE in 2010. We have also produced a documentary together a long time ago. I stay active in these networks, attending events at major festivals and keeping up with what's happening. They are a great way to connect with people who share the same goals, even if they work differently, and to understand how collaboration can work across different systems in Europe

What support systems do you benefit from as a Danish producer? Can you tell us about the new tax incentive system?

As Danish producers, we are incredibly lucky to have a strong public service system, especially with DR, which is open to international projects, and the support of the Danish Film Institute (DFI), which backs both fiction and documentary, including strong minor co-production schemes. We use these a lot and have several upcoming documentary projects, and we are also very much interested in fiction co-productions, also as minor co-producers. In the past, we have co-produced The Nile Hilton Incident (Cairo Confidential in France) and Boy from Heaven with Tarik Saleh, as well as an Irish-Belgian film  Good Favour with EAVE graduates Benoit Roland and Conor Barry. DFI is essential for us: they offer up to 100% of the Danish spend for documentaries, with a maximum usually around 70.000 Euro, and 60% for fiction, depending on artistic and technical merits. Regional funds are also available, though you need distribution in place to apply.

The new Danish tax incentive is another big step. I was part of the working group within our national Producers' Association, analysing how it could benefit TV, film, documentary, animation, and both local and international producers. It’s a 25% tax credit with a cap, and projects need at least 25% international financing (the more, the better), and a minimum budget (4 million DKK for documentaries, for example). There will be a cultural test, and we are hoping for two application rounds a year that would be fairly automatic in terms of points. There will be a cap on how much a production can get, which will make it possible also for smaller projects, like documentaries, to apply. This scheme has been announced so far, the politicians have approved it, but detailed rules will come in the autumn, with the first deadline expected around March 2026.

What are your next projects in the pipeline?

Right now, I’m working on The Coil Case, a documentary we pitched at CPH:DOX, co-produced with Anorak Films in Greenland (headed by EAVE producer and Danish National Coordinator Emile Hertling Péronard) and another Danish company called Reef TV. Thousands of Inuit women in Greenland were fitted with IUDs by Danish doctors in the 1960-70s - often without their consent. This film follows the women’s fight for justice and raises critical questions regarding Denmark’s colonisation of Greenland. It’s a painful, complex story, told from the women’s perspective, and a very important film for us.

I’m also developing an animated documentary called Nanyang with Italian company Elliot Films about a Chinese woman who lived through the Cultural Revolution as a child: her father was high up in Mao’s regime. It’s a deeply personal and political story about family, trust, and societal change, and we hope to co-produce with Italy and France, collaborating with the same animation team we worked with on Flee.

We also have a co-production with Nanuk Film in Barcelona and TF Distribution in Chile about the death of Pablo Neruda, a documentary directed by a couple who are both half-Chilean and half-Danish/German. Her family was from the left, and his family was from the right, but now they are partners both in life and in film.

And we are minor co-producers on a Polish film called My Father, the Iceman, a powerful father-daughter story. The father assassinated Chris Hani, the head of the communist party in South Africa, got imprisoned there, while becoming a far-right icon in Poland. The daughter fights for his freedom, even though she does not agree with his politics. The film explores her struggle to come to terms with who he is and who she is and finding her own feet.

You are producing films that explore many different angles of the world. Is there any reason behind this?

I think it comes down to curiosity and the way I got into film through an interest in the world, in society, politics, and economics. When we get proposals, we really focus on the director’s vision, both aesthetically and in their understanding of the people and world they are portraying, whether it’s fiction or documentary. We always look for a synergy between form and content. It is like solving a puzzle: how can we tell this story in a way where the form supports the meaning? We look for directors who want to go on that journey with us, and who care not just about making the film, but also about the participants and about how the film reaches the world: ideally with a long life, in education, in art, in public discourse.

FLEE © Final Cut for Real

What would you advise for today’s generation of producers who are starting their careers?

At Final Cut for Real, it has been really important to work as a kind of collective. We have always been a small group of producers who discuss and decide together, often working in pairs on projects. That internal collaboration has been incredibly valuable: we learn from each other, challenge each other, and discuss the projects before they face the outside world. I know I tend to fall in love with projects easily, so I really need someone to ask the tough questions early on: did you think about this, would this be too complicated or too expensive?  Creating a space for that kind of shared thinking makes a big difference.

The other thing I always recommend is: do Eurodoc, EAVE, ACE, Inside Pictures. Do all of them, if you can, with some years between each round. I didn’t know this when I started, but in Denmark, we can get support from the DFI, the Producers' Rights Association PRD and Nordisk Film Fonden to cover the costs of attending these workshops, and we have tried to make sure everyone at Final Cut for Real could go when they wanted. They are really useful, and they give everyone a network of people that they know, and that’s a benefit for the whole company, because then the company network becomes bigger, it multiplies our opportunities. Also, it’s such intensive learning that happens in these courses, and since the film world and the world in general is changing so fast, we constantly need to update our knowledge, so I really encourage everyone to do it.

EAVE PRODUCERS WORKSHOP 2026 - Open Call for Applications

EAVE, European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs, is one of the leading training and development providers for producers in Europe, renowned for its EAVE Producers Workshop.

Don't miss your chance: apply by August 18th!

 Who is it for?

EAVE is aimed at producers (fiction, documentary and TV series), who are already working in the film and television industries, and who wish to expand their operation internationally by increasing their knowledge of producing and co-producing in Europe and by building up an international professional network. We also welcome applications from associated branches of the industry – e.g. commissioning, funding, legal and finance, festivals & markets, media administration. Each year 56 participants are selected from most of the EU countries and beyond and take part in three one-week long workshops.

Please check the section “Applicant Profile” for more detailed information.

“It has truly been one of the greatest experiences of my professional life. The level of expertise is extremely high, and your network expands significantly, both of which help strengthen the very people who are not just the future of our industry, but are the industry itself.”

Edwin Goldman, Goldman Films, Netherlands, EAVE Producers Workshop 2024

 How does it work?

Half the participants attend the course with projects, and it is an excellent means of development through intense focus on the project with colleagues and experts throughout the year. The other half come to EAVE in order to focus on developing their companies or careers. Most participants attending with a project also bring their writer for the first two weeks, which enables producer and writer teams to benefit together from one-to-one sessions with script experts.

During the first two workshops, participants work within groups led by experienced producers and with several experts on script analysis, development and production financing, legal aspects of co-production, marketing, pitching, packaging and more. In the third workshop, some 50 Future Partners (commissioning editors, national and regional media funds, financiers, sales agents, etc.) join the participants to discuss the projects, companies and careers of the participants, a process which offers unusual access to Europe's Key Industry Players.

EAVE graduates join a unique network of active European and international producers, which forms one of the backbones of the industry. Furthermore, EAVE participants and members benefit from our partnerships with the leading European film festivals and markets, where EAVE facilitates graduate participation.

“EAVE is an opportunity for professional and personal transformation. A space for intercontinental exchanges, from new businesses to new partners.”

THE PARTNERSHIP BEHIND CHANGE

CHANGE is initiated and funded by IMS through the New Democracy Fund.

EAVE is a professional training, project development and networking organization for audiovisual producers. Founded in 1988, our objectives are to provide professional training opportunities and to bring producers from different regions of the world together with the aim of facilitating co-production relationships. We believe that the support of independent voices, creative imagination and culturally driven companies within the global media industries is an urgent necessity in the 21st century. Through our work we aim to contribute towards the creation of strong networks of producers and to encourage the exchange of knowledge and skills which will strengthen independent production across the world.

CPH:DOX, Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival, is one of the biggest documentary film festivals in the world. A festival that continues to develop and expand, presenting a program that ranges from the works of major international directors to new talents, from large-scale theatrical releases to film/video works in the field between cinema and visual art. The festival’s platform for professionals, CPH:INDUSTRY, attracting 2.000+ professional delegates annually, has established itself as a fundamental European documentary marketplace, offering a wide range of activities and services connecting independent documentary film producers and filmmakers with the major international funds, broadcasters, streaming platforms, sales agents, as well as art curators, science foundations, impact bodies, traditional and alternative exhibitors, investors and philanthropists in the fields related to cinema – and beyond.

IMS, International Media Support, is promoting journalism and documentary film to strengthen the capacity of media to reduce conflict, strengthen democracy and facilitate dialogue. Our work is geared towards helping locally-based public interest media operating in armed conflicts, humanitarian crises and rapid political change, both positive and negative, to provide the public and “civic organizations” with public interest content they can trust and use. We work in more than 40 countries across four continents with a staff of about 150 people.

OBITUARY: ENRIQUE NICANOR

EAVE mourns the loss of former EAVE group leader and Spanish National Coordinator Enrique Nicanor.

It is with great sadness that EAVE received the news that our dear friend Enrique Nicanor, filmmaker and advocate for public broadcasting, passed away in Madrid on July 8, 2025, at the age of 80. His work was instrumental in shaping a culture of public television in post-Franco Spain, helping to establish democratic values through cultural programming.

Born in Spain and raised in Havana, Nicanor studied Fine Arts. He began his career in Cuba as a cartoonist and animation director at the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC) before moving to Paris. He returned to Spain in 1967 at the request of Adolfo Suárez and was appointed Director of TVE 2, one of the country’s two public television channels, in 1983. He created Barrio Sésamo, Spain’s first version of Sesame Street, and developed cultural programming that helped shape Spanish public television after the Franco era. He was an independent producer from 1988 until his passing.

His life-long work, including leadership positions at INPUT (International Public Television Conference), played a key role in strengthening public service broadcasting across Europe, and received multiple accolades over the years, notably with a Premio Ondas in 1983 and the Golden Medal of the Galician Academy of Audiovisual Arts in 2005.

As group leader for many years, and later as EAVE National Coordinator in Spain, Enrique contributed greatly to EAVE's growth, and was always a loyal supporter.

As EAVE Head of Studies Lise Lense Moller puts it: "Enrique was a very kind, knowledgeable, lovely gentleman in the old sense of the word, but also an artist and a family man. He seemed to know everybody worth knowing in Spain and beyond - whether in the film business or local gourmet restaurants that one would have never spotted without him. And for me personally, he was a very generous and supportive mentor when I, as a young producer from Denmark, joined EAVE in 1992 to become a group leader. I am forever grateful to have known him."

Enrique Nicanor is survived by his spouse, Cayetana “Tany” Mulero; their two daughters, María and Cayetana; and his grandchildren, Penélope, and Noah. The EAVE community would like to express to his family our love and admiration for their husband, father, and grandfather; we send our warmest condolences to them.

Enrique will be dearly missed by his EAVE family.
