  • EAVE project THE OTHER MAN by EAVE graduate Stephan Komandarev, producers: EAVE graduates Katya Trichkova and Stephan Komandarev, co-producer: EAVE graduate Oana Kelemen is in development. Inspired by the short story Makedonija from Miroslav Penkov’s book East of the West, THE OTHER MAN takes place in Sofia during the 1960s. Georgi and Nora are an elderly couple living in a nursing home, their days passing by in silence after Nora suffers a stroke that makes her incapable of speech. Georgi will soon find himself a witness to an unexpected confession: old love letters from Nora’s youth tell him that she was in love with another man. The fact that this other man, now long dead, was the complete opposite of Georgi makes the protagonist question his life and his marriage. The project received support from the MEDIA Programme and will likely be supported by the Bulgarian National Film Center.

Upcoming Deadlines

Project submissions are now open for the 3rd Frontières@Brussels

Genre film projects from across Europe and North America can apply until 11 December

Frontières@Brussels 2016 is now accepting project submissions for its third annual European edition. For each edition, Frontières selects approximately 20 genre film projects from across Europe & North America. Project participants are invited to partake in a 3-day networking event with the leaders of the international genre film industry at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF).

Last year, the event marked its return to the Belgian capital with an expanded Frontières line-up that allowed more projects to participate in live pitching sessions, as well as specialised spotlights (the Market Spotlight and the Seeking Director Spotlight projects) that have brought together the best in genre-film projects and industry initiatives from around the world. Cineuropa was a media partner of the event.

Established in 2012 at the Fantasia International Film Festival, Frontières has since developed into a biannual transatlantic circuit - taking place in Montreal in July, and Brussels in April. The Frontières International Co-Production Market is a collaboration between the Fantasia International Film Festival, Vision-in-Motion, and the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, and is made possible thanks to the generous support of Creative Europe, Visit Brussels, the Brussels Capital-Region, Telefilm Canada and SODEC.

Applications open for the Italy-Germany Co-production Development Fund

Deadline December 15

There’s still time until 15 December to apply for access to the Italy-Germany Co-production Development Fund, set up a year ago by the Italian Ministry for Cultural Affairs and Heritage and Tourism and the German FFA. The annual budget set aside for developing co-productions between the two countries is €100,000 (with 50% provided by the Italian Ministry and the other 50% provided by FFA).

Eligible for support are projects for feature films, regardless of genre (fiction, animation, documentary), that are co-produced by Italy and Germany and intended above all for distribution in theatres. The amount granted to each film varies from €10,000 up to a maximum of €30,000.

Applications must be sent via email to the following addresses: fsig@beniculturali.it and jones@ffa.de by 15 December 2015. A paper copy must also be sent to the offices of the Italian Directorate General for Cinema and the offices of the FFA. Guidelines and forms can be downloaded here. The documents will also be published on the website of the FFA.

A database has also been set up, on the initative of the Canada Media Fund, to put Canadian and Italian producers in touch with one another, and allows producers to apply for funding available for co-productions between Italy and Canada.

PITCHING DU RÉEL 2016:Call for projects for the next Pitching du Réel

Application is open until December 15, 2015

Visions du Réel organises for the eleventh time in succession the Pitching du Réel, one of the most renowned international coproduction events dedicated to creative feature-length documentaries.

Since its creation, the purpose of Pitching du Réel is to help launch projects with artistic ambition and potential in the principal distribution markets. It is intended for young as well as experienced and acknowledged filmmakers.

15 projects are presented publicly then discussed in round-table sessions and in one-to-one meetings. The round-table discussions take place in the presence of professionals including commissioning editors, producers, and distributors active in national and international markets or in digital promotion, as well as a variety of financial partners: Public and private institutions, NGOs, contemporary art curators and foundations.

Our main target is to encourage international co-productions and to help finance outstanding documentary projects addressing an international audience. We offer the participants the opportunity to discuss the content and form of their project and to find out whether the project stands a chance on the market and what market that would be. The project teams may find international partners and financing support, discuss current questions of filmmaking, foster their knowledge and use the various networking possibilities in a pleasant, relaxed environment.
