He was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease in 2008 just after his short film The Sound Of People screened at the Sundance Film festival. The film follows a 16-year-old girl who escapes from her foster home and, with the help of the boy who loves her, sets out to find her father, a writer who is confined to a psychiatric institution. Irish companies Newgrange Pictures and Kennedy Films are producing with financing from the Irish Film Board, Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, TV3 and the Irish tax incentive, with co-production finance expected from Sweden and Norway. The Irish producers also ran a crowd-funding campaign that netted more than €100,000.

Soon, Krauz discovers that communist secret police were behind the torturing of the sexton as well as a missing document detailing crimes committed by priests, with which the secret police blackmailed the church. The trail leads to an expert on interrogations from within the communist secret police, the so-called “Red Captain”. Upcoming deadlines

East-West Co-productions Connecting again in Cottbus

13 projects from 12 countries to be pitched at the 2014 edition of connecting cottbus on November 6/7

The co-production market connecting cottbus, taking place for the 16th time this year on November 6 and 7 in parallel with FilmFestival Cottbus, has developed into one of the most important European meeting points for East-West co-productions. Once again, about 140 film producers, sales agents and representatives of European film funds will meet to discuss new ideas for feature films. Panels and workshops will discuss current trends in the film industry. A special focus lies on developments in the funding of East-West co-productions, audience design and marketing.

The core event of connecting cottbus is the pitching of new feature film projects. Since 1999, 186 projects have been pitched of which 70 have since been completed or are currently in production. Recent success stories are the Croatian-Serbian box office hit THE PRIEST’S CHILDREN, the Kosovo-German co-production THREE WINDOWS AND A HANGING (winner of the Cineuropa Prize at the Sarajevo Film Festival) and the Greek-Latvian-German film MODRIS, selected for the film festivals in Toronto and San Sebastian 2014.

This year, connecting cottbus will present 13 projects from 12 countries. Projects range from the laconic black comedy SPIRAL from Romania via the highly political refugee story THE ESCAPE (Turkey) to the Estonian-Russian fantasy love story THE DREAM FISH. Socially relevant global issues such as gentrification (INNER CITY, Russia) and the situation of single mothers (THE DAYBREAK, Albania) are as prevalent as teenage coming-of-age stories (THE FIVE SKYSCRAPERS, Serbia) and stories about contemporary life such as A COAT OF GOLD (Hungary) about a woman in the creative industry dealing with her unexpected cancer.

Historical subjects come from Poland and Ukraine: OWL, THE BAKER’S DAUGHTER is set in a post-war Poland characterized by totalitarian pressure and personal escapism. ALEKSANDR DOVZHENKO. ODESSA DEBUT draws a portrait of the Ukrainian Black Sea metropolis Odessa in the 1920s.

Among the producers presenting current projects at connecting cottbus are Bujar Alimani (90 Production, Albania), Jamila Wenske (One Two Films, Germany), Milena Garfield (West End Productions, Serbia/USA), Michal Gozdzik (Teamwork Production, Poland) and Ketie Daniela (Ablabuda Film, Georgia).

connecting cottbus will also award prizes with a total value of 27.000 Euro. This year’s coco Special Pitch Award goes to the political thriller project THE VEGETABLE LAMB set in Central Asia. Director Thomas Sieben won last year’s main award in the German-Polish Youth Film Competition of FilmFestival Cottbus for his widely noted film THE DAM.

connecting cottbus is supported by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg GmbH, Creative Europe – MEDIA and MDM / Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung GmbH. Supporting Partners of connecting cottbus are the Polish Film Institute, Creative Europe Desk Berlin-Brandenburg, Torino Film Lab, Producers Network, Maia Workshops, EAVE, ACE, Moscow Business Square, Odessa International Film Festival, CineLink, Meetings On the Bridge, Nipkow Programm.

The list of projects selected for the pitching at connecting cottbus 2014 can be found at www.connecting-cottbus.de

EXTENDED DEADLINE: EAVE 2015 European Producers Workshop

Call for applications: EAVE 2015 European Producers Workshop - deadline September 26, 2014

EAVEEuropean Audiovisual Entrepreneurs, is one of the leading training and development providers for producers in Europe, renowned for its European Producers Workshop.

Who is it for?

EAVE is aimed at producers, both fiction and documentary, who are already working in the film and television industries, who wish to begin to operate on a European wide basis by increasing their knowledge of producing and co-producing in Europe and by building up a pan European professional network. We also welcome applications from associated branches of the industry - e.g. commissioning, funding, legal and finance, festivals & markets, media administration. Each year fifty participants are selected from most of the EU countries and beyond and take part in three one-week long workshops.

How does it work?

Half the participants attend the course with projects and it is an excellent means of development through intense focus on the project with colleagues and experts throughout the year. Most participants attending with a project also bring their writer for the first two weeks which enables producer and writer to benefit together from one-to-one sessions with script experts.

During the first two workshops, in March and June, participants work within groups led by experienced producers and with several experts on script analysis, development and production financing, legal aspects of co-production, marketing, pitching, packaging and more. In the third week in October/November, around 50-60 Decision Makers (commissioning editors, national and regional media funds, sales agents, etc.) join the participants to discuss the projects, companies and careers of the participants, a process which offers unusual access to Europe's Decision Makers.

EAVE graduates join a unique network of active European producers which forms one of the backbones of the industry. Furthermore, EAVE participants and members benefit from our partnerships with the leading European film festivals and markets where EAVE facilitates graduate participation.

Timeline

The interviews with a pre-selection of candidates will take place in autumn 2014 and the selection will be announced in December 2014. The 3 workshops take place during March 9 - 16 in Luxembourg (LU), June (dates TBC) in Belgium and October/November (dates TBC) in Strasbourg (FR) 2015.

Extended Deadline for APPLICATIONS: September 26, 2014

Off we go for the 3rd edition of EAVE+ in Luxembourg

Off we go for the 3rd edition of EAVE+ in Luxembourg

12 experienced producers from 8 different countries have been selected to gather for four days with 6 high-profile industry experts to discuss their company structuresmanagement practices and new business models. (Full list of participants at the end of the press release.)

The third edition of EAVE+ takes place during September 17-21, 2014 at the hotel Le Place D’Armes in Luxembourg.

Among the guests this time are German producer and distributor Stefan Arndt who will run a company case study about his production and distribution outlets X-Filme and X-Verleih.

Anne Flamant (Head of the cinema department at the OBCNeuflize bank in France) will give an overview of new ways of film financing in the French film industry.

US indie producer Jay Van Hoy will share his experience with and provide insight into the world of the American independents and discuss methods of running creative businesses.

Management coach Michael Comyn (IE) will work with the producers on leadership, management skills and personal resilience.

Led by EAVE Head of Studies Jani Thiltges (Samsa Film, LU) together with EAVE+ consultant Michael Weber (The Match Factory, DE), the keynote sessions are completed by group work sessions and 1-2-1 meetings with the guest experts as well as other participants.

Some comments from the previous editions:

« I thought it was a great four days and served as a real think tank for experienced producers to gain perspective on our changing world. »

Mike S. Ryan, Greyshack Films, USA

« The EAVE+ workshop was extremely useful on many levels - practical information on a range of subjects from promoting films on VoD platforms to how to work on one's resilience in stressful situations to raising private equity and managing those investor relationships. The networking element also really paid off in terms of finding a co-producer with access to a national fund in a country where one of my projects takes place, and that funding application is now underway. »

Natasha Dack, Tigerlily Films, UK

« It was hugely inspiring and interesting to look back and forward at our companies and the ever changing film environment in a greatly open atmosphere with an international group of colleague creative entrepreneurs. Priceless and inspiring to share thoughts and ideas, weakness and strengths about leading our companies and the ever changing film environment. »

Hanneke Niens, KeyFilm, The Netherlands

« It was the perfect moment for me and my partner to come to EAVE +, … (the) best moment to take a look… and see how it works for people with (the) same passion, but living and working in a completely different environment. »

Fernando Epstein, Mutante Cine, Uruguay

« The combination of people both participants and experts was magnificent and lead to a complete openness that I could not have imagined possible between a group of professionals at this stage of their careers. It was like an AA for producers, very painful but critical for our wellbeing. I am looking at everything since quite differently. »

Christine Alderson, Ipso Facto Films, UK

The selected participants for the third edition of EAVE+ are:

  • Christophe Audeguis, the cup of tea, France

DIGITAL PRODUCTION CHALLENGE 2014 in BERLIN - Open for Applications!

DIGITAL PRODUCTION CHALLENGE 2014 in BERLIN - Open for Applications!

DIGITAL PRODUCTION CHALLENGE enters its sixth year. The European workshop on digital production workflows, especially designed for 35 producers, line producers, production managers and post production supervisors, will take place in Berlin from 13 to 15 November 2014.

It will be run in English by an experienced pool of professionals including:

  • the German producer Martin Hagemann (zero fiction; “The Turin Horse” by Béla Tarr, “Fay Grimm” by Hal Hartley, “Moloch” & “Father and Son” by Aleksandr Sokurov),
  • the French DoP Philippe Ros, AFC (“Oceans” by Jacques Perrin & Jacques Cluzaud, “Home” by Yann Arthus-Bertrand),
  • the German DIT Florian Rettich (“Pina” by Wim Wenders, “Die Wermessung der Welt” by Detlev Buck, “Highlander – The Source” by Brett Leonard)
  • the post-production experts Ruedi Schick (Founder & CEO of Swiss Effects, Switzerland) and Tommaso Vergallo (French consultant with a 20 year experience at Swiss Effects, Duboi, Quinta and Digimage; “Amelie” by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, “Asterix and Obelix, Mission Cleopatra by Alain Chabat”, “René” by Alain Cavalier, “Amour” by Michael Haneke, “Ten” by Abbas Kiarostami“, ”On the Road” by Walter Salles).

Although digital technology is now part of everyday life, a plethora of workflows on one hand and a lack of lasting standards/supports on the other make it more complicated for producers to fulfill the demands of their partners (co-producers and distributors).

DPC enables professionals to get a better grasp of this complex environment, of the tasks division between the partners involved  - from the director to the post-production provider - and to acquire that shared language, thus granting them full access to the decision chain and guiding them to best position their productions within the digital workflow.

The workshop is divided into four parts:

  • Comparison of workflows and case-study presentations of different budget ranges (special focus on low budget films and a "standard" budget  around 2mio€) by experienced producers and their post-production providers;
  • Discussions on selected participants' projects (feature or documentary films);
  • Panel discussions on key topics such as teamwork, digital distribution and archiving;
  • Focus subjects on selected technical aspects.

DIGITAL PRODUCTION CHALLENGE is proposed by FOCAL in co-operation with Swiss Effects and with support of the MEDIA Programme of the European Union.

Registration is now open until 16 September 2014 at www.focal.ch/digiprodchallenge/form/application_form_2014.html

Participation fee for 2,5 days (including meals):

450 Euro for full board accommodation (excluding travel). Some scholarships are available.

250 Euro excluding accommodation & travel.
