APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR THE 3rd EDITION OF EAVE+ for experienced producers!

APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR THE 3rd EDITION OF EAVE+

for experienced producers from Europe and the rest of the world!

After two successful editions in September 2013 and January 2014, EAVE+ goes into the third round. 12-15 experienced producers and 6 high-profile industry experts will gather during 4 days to discuss their company structures, management practices and new business models.

The third edition of EAVE+ will take place during September 17-21, 2014 at the hotel Le Place D’Armes in Luxembourg.

Applications are open for independent producers with a solid track record and international experience from Europe and the rest of the world until June 19, 2014.

A limited number of scholarships are available for participants from selected MEDIA countries.

Led by EAVE Head of Studies Jani Thiltges (Samsa Film, LU) together with EAVE+ consultant Michael Weber (The Match Factory, DE), keynote sessions by international guests will be mixed with group work sessions and 1-2-1 meetings.

Among the guests this time are German producer Stefan Arndt who will run a company case study about his production and distribution outlets X-Filme and X-Verleih. Management coach Michael Comyn (IE) will work with the producers on leadership, management skills and personal resilience. Anne Flamant (Head of the cinema department at the OBCNeuflize bank in France) will give an overview of new ways of film financing in the French film industry. US indie producer Mike S. Ryan will share his experience with and provide insight into the world of the American independents.

Some comments from the previous editions:

« I thought it was a great four days and served as a real think tank for experienced producers to gain perspective on our changing world. »

Mike S. Ryan, Greyshack Films, USA

« The EAVE+ workshop was extremely useful on many levels - practical information on a range of subjects from promoting films on VoD platforms to how to work on one's resilience in stressful situations to raising private equity and managing those investor relationships. The networking element also really paid off in terms of finding a co-producer with access to a national fund in a country where one of my projects takes place, and that funding application is now underway.»

Natasha Dack, Tigerlily Films, UK

« It was hugely inspiring and interesting to look back and forward at our companies and the ever changing film environment in a greatly open atmosphere with an international group of colleague creative entrepreneurs. Priceless and inspiring to share thoughts and ideas, weakness and strengths about leading our companies and the ever changing film environment. »

Hanneke Niens, KeyFilm, The Netherlands

« It was the perfect moment for me and my partner to come to EAVE +, … (the) best moment to take a look… and see how it works for people with (the) same passion, but living and working in a completely different environment. »

Fernando Epstein, Mutante Cine, Uruguay

« The combination of people both participants and experts was magnificent and lead to a complete openness that I could not have imagined possible between a group of professionals at this stage of their careers. It was like an AA for producers, very painful but critical for our wellbeing. I am looking at everything since quite differently. »

Christine Alderson, Ipso Facto Films, UK

EAVE+ is organised twice a year in Luxembourg with different keynote speakers and topics addressed at each workshop session.

EAVE+ is supported by the MEDIA Programme of the EU and the Luxembourg Film Fund.

Jarka ends up stealing two toddlers whose mother has left them, and she brings them to her favourite garden, where she plays ‘family’ with her friend Kristián. With the budget now reduced to 350,000 EUR, the project has attracted an international coproducer, Seppia. The project also benefitted from a MEDIA development grant. In his feature documentary, Solomon will move to the Abkhazian Scientific Research Institute of Experimental Pathology and Therapy, established in 1927, a renowned primatology center during the Communist era. His aim is to investigate the relationship between humans and monkeys many years after the Soviet Union’s collapse, in a “country that tries to reinvent itself" (as Abkhazia is doing today) where “the thin line between humanity and animality has been crossed during a savage civil war.”

HOLLAND FILM MEETING CO-PRODUCTION PLATFORM

Call for applications! Deadline 1st July 2014

The Holland Film Meeting Co-production Platform (formerly the Netherlands Production Platform) is the co-production market of the NFF. Its selection comprises approximately twenty brilliant, entertaining and thought-provoking projects, all ripe for co-production, ready to be presented to some of international cinema's most important and influential financiers, distributors, sales agents and co-producers.

The aim of the HFM Co-pro Platform is to encourage co-production collaboration between the Netherlands and other countries, especially those with a similar production capacity. Only feature-length films suitable for co-production, with a minimum duration of 70 minutes and with local financial support in place, are eligible for HFM Co-pro Platform selection.

The 2014 application is now available here: www.filmfestival.nl

CROSSROADS CO-PRODUCTION FORUM

Application deadline: JULY 31st 2014

CROSSROADS is the Co-Production Forum, organized by the Thessaloniki International Film Festival. Mediterranean, Balkan and Central European producers with a feature film script are given the chance to meet a new network of financiers, co-producers and leading industry specialists. CROSSROADS introduces producers and directors to a variety of industry professionals from all over the world. The programme is varied and provides the opportunity to meet, formally and informally, distributors, broadcasters, sales agents and consultants. CROSSROADS’ goal is to support the producers of feature-length fiction film projects that contain a link to the Mediterranean and Balkan regions as well as Central Europe. Qualifying features will be produced or co-produced by a country in this area or are movies that contain story elements based in these regions.

Headed by Marie Pierre Macia and together with the CROSSROADS team, we are looking for feature-length fiction film projects that contain a link to the Mediterranean and Balkan region or Central Europe. They should either be produced or co-produced by a country within these regions or contain elements in the story that link them to these regions. Projects should have a producer attached and could be in all stages of pre-production. Our main focus in the selection procedure will be on projects that present a high possibility of being realized, combining this quality with artistic elements.

In this framework, CROSSROADS has come to add an important action in the direction of aiding and promoting local talent. CROSSROADS has a particular focus to countries from the regions with a low production capacity. The constant goal of the project is to scout for new talent in these countries and to provide producers with opportunities to make their work known in a wider market. Through the actions of the Forum, the selected producers are aided in their efforts to promote their projects outside their countries and to network with potential partners. The joint involvement of countries from the Mediterranean, the Balkans and Central Europe signals the start of a new relationship between countries, which, although separated geographically by the Mediterranean, are culturally united through the international language of cinema.

CROSSROADS awards include the main co-production award with Two Thirty Five Inc. offering post-production services (image & sound) and the CNC Development Award of 7.000 euros. The producer of the winning project will also be granted a free accreditation for the Producer’s Network, Cannes Film Festival 2015 session and Sofia Meetings of the Sofia International Film Festival is selecting a project to be presented during their session in March 2015. Also, the MFI Script 2 Film Workshops is awarding a scholarship to one of the projects and Initiative Film (France) is offering its script development services to one Greek project.

Venice European Gap-Financing Co-production Market

La Biennale di Venezia / Venice European Gap-Financing Co-production Market (29th - 30th August)

The new event within the 3rd edition of the Venice Film Market (28th August – 2nd September 2014)

Dear EAVE producers,

After a 2nd edition which showed a 25% increase in the number of distributors, producers and sales agents attending the market as well as films presented, the 3rd edition of the Venice Film Market continues its development and launches a new initiative, the Venice European Gap-Financing Co-production Market, which will take place on August 29 and 30, 2014.

The Venice European Gap-Financing Co-Production Market is a new platform intended to support the European producers to secure the final financing of their projects through one-to-one meetings with potential and appropriate international professionals.

The main criteria to participate in this original event is to have 70% of the financing in place, and the VFM will offer 16 selected projects (8 European and 8 Italian) the unique opportunity to close their international financing through selected financiers, producers, distributors, sales agents and film funds.

The call for projects has opened on May 9th and the submission deadline is June 20th. The regulations, submissions procedure and the application form are available on http://www.labiennale.org/en/cinema/vfm-71/egf.html

A special Italian Industry Focus will also be organized this year and will emphasise the internationalisation of the Italian industry with specific networking sessions, panels and events involving international and Italian professionals.

The Venice Film Market (28th August – 2nd September 2014) of the 71st Venice International Film Festival will partner and strengthen the Industry Office, which in turn will continue to function as it has in past years throughout the entire Venice Film Festival, offering many services to its guests.

The 2013 edition of the VFM clearly showed a very positive increase in the number of  professionals attending the market, with 246 key distributors and 86 key sales agents. In addition, some 1,400 professionals, including producers, film commissions and institutions, exhibitors, film festivals etc, coming from 58 countries, attended the Venice Film Market.

The general feedback from the industry is that this Market is the perfect place for networking, and fits seamlessly with the programming of the festival, proving that Venice is once again becoming a rendezvous to add to the professional agenda.

Viña del Mar, CHILE. May 2014. The Application form to participate in the Training and Networks Program is now available on the FICVIÑA´s webpage: www.cinevina.cl

This year, the program will select 10 audiovisual projects with their respective creative team members (directors, producers and scriptwriters) to participate in this year’s course.

Over the last six years, EAVE has expanded its training opportunities beyond the borders of Europe: with new partnerships in Latin America, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, the former Soviet states and Asia, EAVE is opening new windows of cooperation at a global scale.

The applications will be open until June 15th for professionals with fictional and documentary projects aimed for cinema in development stage. The regulations are available on www.ficvina.cl.

The main objective is to promote skills and competences of producers, directors and scriptwriters in order to improve their audiovisual project’s artistic contents and business dynamics. Crowdfunding for EAVE projects THE SKY ABOVE US and DUST CLOTH

CTM Pictures crowdfunding for EAVE 2010 project THE SKY ABOVE US

NATO started a large-scale air campaign to destroy the Yugoslav military infrastructure, hitting on both military and civilian targets including the local TV station. The bombings lasted for 78 days. THE SKY ABOVE US does not touch on the politics or details behind the war. Instead it forms the backdrop for a human story portraying how Ana, Sloba & Bojan react and cope with the fear from the nightly attacks.

THE SKY ABOVE US is an authentic, contemporary drama about the bombing of Belgrade in 1999. Ana, Sloba and Bojan: three different people, three different ways of hanging onto normal life in the most difficult of situations. Every night Belgrade transforms from a vibrant city into a military target. While the bombs fall from the sky above, Ana, Bojan and Sloba struggle with the question: How can I survive and stay sane in this insane world?

The NATO bombings on Belgrade took place 15 years ago. Now 15 years later we are asking your support to help finalize Marinus Groothof's debut film.

Ret Film crowdfunding for EAVE 2013 project DUST CLOTH

"We are making a film, and we want to make it a collaborative effort! The challenges of making a film in Turkey need no explaining… It isn’t always easy to tell the stories we want to tell."

EAVE 2013 project TOZ BEZI (DUST CLOTH) is the tale of two women struggling to find a foothold in the city; it is a much-cherished project we have been working on for three years. Over this time, writer-director Ahu Öztürk has drawn on episodes from her own life to weave together and fine-tune a simple, but hugely engaging story. The story centers on Nesrin and Hatun, two women who live in the city outskirts on Istanbul’s Asian shore. Home is a down-at-heel neighborhood under threat of urban regeneration, which the women leave to clean homes in the more upscale center of Kadiköy. Life may have dealt them a rough hand, but they manage for the most part to retain a wry, and often self-deprecating sense of humor. Still, there comes a point where the uphill struggle begins to wear them down. One is tougher, the other more sensitive; one more pragmatic, the other more of a dreamer… The relationships they build with the women they clean for are fraught with dilemmas; and even their own sister-like bond is prone to moments of spite and outright maliciousness…
Dust Cloth is a simple film by women, about women. And like most simple stories, it needs support to be made.

When the project was first launched, Dust Cloth won the CNC Development Award at the Istanbul Film Festival’s Meetings on the Bridge. An EAVE Award followed at the Sarajevo Film Festival’s CineLink Co-production Market. The project then traveled to the Holland Film Meeting at the Nederlands Film Festival and won production support from the Turkish Ministry of Culture in 2012.

Names lined up for the main cast of Dust Cloth include Nazan Kesal, Asiye Dinçsoy, Serra Yilmaz and Didem Inselel, while Meryem Yavuz will join the creative team as cinematographer. As we said, this is truly a women’s film…

If you think you can support us in kind, or any other way, please drop Ret Film an email to either of the following addresses: nesrag@gmail.com and cigdemmater@gmail.com

EP2C post-production workshop

We are pleased to announce that the EP2C post-production workshop is heading to Vienna, Austria, in October this year. It will be a special occasion, as the workshop will celebrate its 5th anniversary!

After four editions, EP2C is proud to see its projects find their way: 15 films have already been completed or are in post-production and 30 more are in pre-production or development. It has been a pleasure to host 82 participants (55 producers and 27 post-production supervisors) from 36 countries.

This newsletter gives us the opportunity to present you with the films that were brought to EP2C for post-production development.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the pedagogical team of 50 international experts, producers, post-production supervisors, VFX supervisors, sound experts, sales agents, lawyers… who have breathed life into our workshops and have guided our participants on how to get to grips with the challenges of post-production.We are also grateful for the support of the MEDIA programme of the European Union and the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles who have supported the workshop since the beginning as well as our local partners who made it possible for EP2C to travel to Belgium, Poland, and Germany.

Last but not least, we would like to thank Filmfonds WIEN to host us in Austria this year.EP2C is a project-based workshop, tailor-made for producers and dedicated to the post-production management of feature films (fiction or documentary). The workshop is also open to post-production supervisors.

Registrarion is now open!

As in every other year, we are pleased to announce the start of our further education program »International Producing« in September in Cologne, Germany. We offer around 12 participants the opportunity to expand their knowledge of the material, financing and marketing of international film projects in five weekend workshops.

The focus is on exploring the current conditions of international co-productions and individually suitable business models. Many professionals from Europe and overseas will explain issues and provide case studies. Simon Perry - president of ACE and our program mentor - will act as facilitator and moderator throughout the program.

The process of exploring the participants’ individual profiles and accessing their goals forms the framework of our themes "Finding Material", "Finding Money" and "Finding Markets." Our program is aimed at graduates of film school production programs as well as young professionals from fields such as producing, development, financing, distribution and sales.
