- MILK TEETH by Mihai Mincan, producers: EAVE, PUENTES and TTB graduate Radu Stancu, EAVE graduates Monica Hellström and Konstantinos Vassilaros is in production. The story: As the last person to see her sister before she disappears, Maria (8) finds herself trapped in a world of deceit. Consumed by the loss, she takes it upon herself to find out what really happened, navigating through a universe of muted confusion, in the twilight of the Communist era. As Maria starts feeling that she is getting closer to uncovering the truth, a strange world opens up, threatening to take control of her. The only way to fight against it is to rely on her friends and imagination. MILK TEETH serves as a powerful allegory of Romania’s transition from the Communist era to the hope of a new society after 1989. By representing darkness and void as visual symbolic elements, the film portrays the uncertainty and fear experienced during this period. Maria’s quest for truth mirrors the nation’s desire for justice and accountability. She represents the generation that seeks empowerment, and change becomes vital in a time and place that finally show glimpses of prospects of a free world (producer Radu Stancu). Radu Stancu is producing with Ioana Lascar through Romania’s deFilm in co-production with Cyriac Auriol through France’s Remora Films, Monica Hellström through Danish Strom Pictures, Konstantinos Vassilaros through Greece’s StudioBauhaus and Pavlina Angelova through Bulgaria’s Screening Emotions. - FRONTERA by Judith Colell, co-producer: EAVE graduate Katleen Goossens is in production. Filming of the historical thriller telling of the adventures of a group of people who, despite the threats to their existence, put their lives at risk and flout the rules imposed upon them in order help Jews escaping from Nazi repression, is taking place over six weeks in the region of Pallars and on location around Barcelona. The plot unfolds in 1943, after General Franco has blocked the route for Jews fleeing over the Pyrenees to escape Nazi repression. At the customs office in a border town, Manel Grau, a civil servant with a Republican past, decides to disobey orders, helped by Juliana, a local resident, and Jerôme, a French people smuggler. They all join forces and begin a crusade to help as many Jews to flee as they possibly can. But then, Manel will be trapped in a dangerous odyssey that will revive within him – and within his wife, Mercé – old ghosts of the still-recent Spanish Civil War. “Today, more than ever, there are millions of people who are forced to flee war, hunger and the brutality being caused by their leaders. On the other side, there are always people who help, people who condemn those who run away, and people who turn a blind eye as if nothing were happening to them – people who put themselves at risk and people who don’t,” explains the director. “I believe that film is a weapon for raising awareness and for condemnation. And, as a fast-paced, action-packed film, FRONTERA is also exactly that.” FRONTERA is a production by Coming Soon Films (Spain), Diagonal TV (Banijay Iberia) and Bulletproof Cupid (Belgium). It has secured support from the ICEC, ICAA, Screen Flanders (a VLAIO initiative in conjunction with the Flanders Audiovisual Fund) and the Belgian Federal Government’s Tax Shelter, as well as BNP Paribas Fortis Film Finance and the MEDIA programme.
