Biography

Daniel van Hoogstraten graduated in Law at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro and worked as a lawyer for couple years before he started working on the entertainment industry as a producer. Daniel is the co-founder and now the CEO of Syndrome Films, a Brazilian film and TV production company. He acted as producer on “Diamantino”, Portuguese-French-Brazilian co-production directed by Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt (awarded with the Grand Prize at La Semaine de La Critique – Festival de Cannes 2018), “The Other End”, directed by Felipe Sholl (awarded with the best actress and best film prizes at the Rio Film Festival 2016), “Just for Today” by Sabrina Garcia (best screenplay at Cine Ceará 2018), “Queen of Brazil” by Fernanda Tornaghi and Ricardo Bruno (2008), “Gisela” by Felipe Sholl (2011) and “Favela Frontlines” directed by Renato Martins (2018) (Brazilian premiere at Rio Film Festival 2018 and international premiere at the CPH:DOX 2019), as executive producer on “Satellites”, by Léo Bittencourt (2013), and “Roaller Coaster” directed by Vinicius Reis (in post production), and as creative producer on “Pendular”, Brazilian-French-Argentinean co-production directed by Julia Murat (world premiere on Berlinale 2017 – Panorama, where won the FIPRESCI award). Daniel also worked on the production team of several films and TV series, such as “Rio, I Love You”, “Lilyhammer”, “Through the Shadow” by Walter Lima Junior (2015). During 5 years, Daniel worked as the general coordinator of the RioMarket, the business area of the Rio de Janeiro Int’l Film Festival (aka Festival do Rio), worked as the general manager for the MediaFundMarket.Com, an online platform that gathers crowdfunding and sales of Brazilian content. Daniel was also the Transmedia Lab & One-to-One Meetings coordinator for the RioContentMarket, an international event dedicated to multi-platform content production and open to the television and digital media industry, held in the city of Rio de Janeiro, and the International Acquisitions and Productions Manager for H2O Films, a Brazilian film distribution company. He was selected by the EAVE Puentes 2019, a training program designed to foster the network between Latin American and European producers, and for the Binger Film Lab (The Netherlands), where he took part on the Writers and Creative Producers Film Lab residency program, in Amsterdam; participated on the Rotterdam Lab, organized by the Rotterdam International Film Festival; and took part on a Creative Producer’s Workshop of the Producers Guild of America (held in Rio de Janeiro). Daniel also acted 5 different times as an Emmy International juror (2010, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2018).

Donate to the EAVE Alan Fountain International Scholarship Fund

A scholarship has been set up to honour the memory of Alan Fountain, former Head of Studies and President of EAVE, who passed away in 2016. Its goal is to enable one producer from outside the EU to participate in all three sessions of the EAVE Producers Workshop each year.
