With 158 applications coming from 47 different countries, we are delighted to close the year announcing the participants for the EAVE 2014 European Producers Workshop: 51 promising producers from 28 countries have finally been selected for 2014. Out of the selected producers, 32 are bringing a project to EAVE (of which 6 documentaries). Find below the full list of participants.

EAVE project CHRISTIAN in pre-production

 

  • Venice’s Biennale College – the development and production workshop for micro-budget films - has selected three films for production, including BLOOD CELLS by Joseph Bull and Luke Seomore, producer: EAVE 2002 graduate and group leader Samm Haillay. A decade after a catastrophe destroyed his family and their farm, an eruption from the past compels an exiled young man to embark on an odyssey through the broken and beautiful margins of contemporary Britain.

In its third funding round in 2013 the South Tyrolean Film Fund BLS supports ten projects with an overall volume of 2 M Euro. Among them are the following films by EAVE graduates:

  • ANNE FRANK ANIMATION by Ari Folman, producer: EAVE 1994 graduate and group leader Diana Elbaum is in development. The Israeli director is set to script and direct a family driven animation film based on Anne Frank’s life and diary. The film will be produced by Purple Whale Films, a new Belgian outfit, co-owned by Folman’s Israeli production company, Bridgit Folman Film Gang, and Diana Elbaum’s Belgian production company Entre Chien et Loup. It marks the first time a director-producer team has been granted complete access to archives of the Anne Frank Fonds Basel founded by Otto Frank. Production is due to start in winter 2014.

  • IN SEARCH OF A MIRACLE by Konstantin Bojanov co-producer: EAVE 2011 graduate Janja Kralj and EAVE 2007 graduate Serge Guez is in pre-production. Based on the non-fiction bestseller Nine Lives by William Dalrymple, this documentary follows four individuals in contemporary India who try to transcend the limits of their everyday existence through escape or devotion to a higher power. Produced by Crescendo Films, Film And Music Entertainment (F&ME), KinoElektron and Overdose Joint. Shooting is planned for January 2014 in India.

  •  EAVE 2007 graduate & Romanian National Coordinator Ada Solomon has several films in development: THE DISTANCE BETWEEN YOU AND ME by Mona Nicoara, who is co-producing through her company Sat Mic, TARZAN’S TESTICLES by Alexandru Solomon, co- produced by EAVE 2011 graduate Cedric Bonin, ONE STEP BEHIND THE SERAPHIM, the first feature film of Daniel Gabriel Sandu. Through her company Parada Film, Ada Solomon develops several international projects as minority co-producer. BANAT by Adriano Valerio, produced by EAVE 2011 graduateFabio Battistin. VIKING LINE STORY by Stefan Constantinescu, produced by EAVE 2007 graduate Kristina Åberg. Maren Ade’s TONY ERDMANN, producer: EAVE2007 graduate Jonas Dornbach.

  • MELODY by Bernard Bellefroid, co-producer: EAVE 1992 graduate and EAVE Head of Studies Jani Thiltges is in pre-production. The film is produced by Artémis Production in co-production with Samsa Films (Luxembourg) and Mille et Une Films (France), with the backing of the CCA, RTBF, the Film Fund Luxembourg and Wallimage/Bruxellimage. Filming will start on January 13 for 6 weeks in Brittany, Luxembourg, Odessa and Liverpool.

  •  The Bulgarian National Film Center has selected three Romanian projects for minority co-production support: among them EAVE 2011 project CHRISTIAN by EAVE 2008 graduate Tudor Giurgiu, produced by EAVE 2011 graduate Oana Giurgiu, and Radu Jude’s AFERIM, produced by EAVE 2007 graduate & Romanian National Coordinator Ada Solomon.

  • MEIN VATER by Visar Morina, co-producer: EAVE 2006 graduate Nicole Gerhards is in production. The film received production funding by German FFA and Film- und Medienstiftung NRW.

  • HERE IS HAROLD by Gunnar Vikene, producer: EAVE 2009 graduate Lizette Jonjic is shooting. Produced by Norwegian producer Maria Ekerhovd for Mer Film, Sweden's Migma Film, and SF Norge, the film tells the story of a Norwegian furniture dealer who wants to kidnap IKEA's founder. After principal photography in Bergen, Norway, the crew went to Kalix, Sweden, where shooting concludes on December 21. Based on a novella by Norwegian author Frode Grytten, HERE IS HAROLD is described as "a humorous, warm and human portrait of a man in an existential crisis."

Produced by Cinema-Film Kft, with co-producers KaBoAl Pictures and Toolbox Film. The film is funded by: MDM, MMK.

  • LUCIA DE B. by Paula van der Oest, producer: EAVE 2006 graduate Reinier Selen, co-producers EAVE 2006 graduate Klara Björk, EAVE 2007 graduate Daniella Prah and EAVE 2010 graduate Bernard Michaux is in post-production. The psychological thriller / drama is based on a true story: Lucia de Berk was acquitted in 2010 from an accusation of multiple murders and attempted murder. The nurse from The Hague innocently spent over six years in prison. Nobody was blamed for the mistakes that were made. Therefore, the trial has the ambivalent honour to be the biggest miscarriage of justice in the Netherlands ever. Produced by Rinkel Film B.V. in co-production with Dutch broadcaster NCRV Swedish Filmkreatorerna, Luxembourgian Lucil Film and Belgian Living Stone. The film has been financed by the Netherlands Film Fund, the CoBO Fund, the NCRV, the Swedish Film Institute, Rinkel Film, and the Belgian Tax Shelter. Independent Films will release LUCIA DE B. in March 2014 in Dutch cinemas.

  •  ZERO by Gyula Nemes, co-producer: EAVE 2007 graduate Jiri Konecny is in post-production. The film traces the misadventures of a beekeeper engaged in a desperate battle against consumerist society. Productions companies are 42film, Endorfilm, Katapult Film and Playtime. ZERO is funded by Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (MDM), MEDIA Programme, Czech Film Commission and Hungarian National Film Fund.

  • TRADING GERMANS by Razvan Georgescu, producer: EAVE 2007 graduate & Romanian National Coordinator Ada Solomon is in post-production. The film is dealing with the topic of how the German government bought ethnic Germans from Romania during communism. The budget is 350,000 EUR. The co-production with Februar Film is supported by MEDIA Programme and HBO Romania.

Competitive sections

Compétition InternationaleIt includes three sections for feature length, medium length and short films and presents the best of the contemprary production. Only world, international and European premiers are considered. Special consideration is given to the World premiere. 

Helvétiques

A selection of medium length and short contemporary Swiss films. Special consideration is given to the world premieres. 

État d’esprit

A selection of films that explore the best of the world production focusing on the new talents. Special consideration is given to the world, international and European premieres. 

Regard Neuf

A selection of all first feature films included in the competitive sections of the festival.

Atelier(s)

Focus  

A panorama of the contemporary documentary production of a Southern or Eastern country that is currently developing at an international level. This program is organised in collaboration with the Doc Outlook - International Market, with the support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Visions Sud Est funds. It includes a selection of films of the invited country, a round table discussion and coproduction meetings.

Register to When East Meets West 2014

Accreditation until January 11, 2014

WEMW is aimed at gathering a large number of industry representatives so all film professionals who wish to attend are invited to apply!

WEMW will take place in Trieste from the 20th to the 22nd January 2014 within the frame of the 25th edition of the Trieste Film Festival. The programme will include the pitching of 20 selected projects, a framework programme with round tables, panel discussions, case studies, one-to-one meetings and it will be a two day exchange of knowledge about recent issues of the Eastern and Western European film markets.

Registration for the upcoming 2014 edition of WEMW are open! A unique opportunity to meet funders, commissioning editors, sales agents, distributors and producers, in particular from Eastern Europe, Italy and – only for 2014 – from Benelux (BE, LU, NL).

When East Meets West, that will take place in Trieste from the 20th to 22nd of January: if you wish to know who are the guests already confirmed you can have a look at the decision maker section!

The programme will include the pitching of 22 promising selected projects, a framework programme with round tables, panel discussions, case studies and one-to-one meetings. If you wish to have more details you can find a draft schedule in the programme section.

Georgia Opens Coproduction Funding Applications 

Applications are due by 10 January 2014. 

The Georgian National Film Centeris accepting applications for funding for film co-productions.The grants contest was announced on 10 December 2013. Applicants that have not met GNFC conditions will then have until 3 February to make amendments to their applications.

Grants are available to films with two coproduction partners eligible for European Convention funding and to coproductions with three or more partners, with one eligible European Convention country partner. 

 GNFC also announced that it will partner with the United Nations to support a documentary on the topic of domestic violence and violence toward women.

FRONTIÈRES – International Co-Production Market

Brussels April 10-12, 2014
THE SUBMISSION DEADLINE FOR FRONTIÈRES BRUSSELS IS DECEMBER 20!

Following two highly successful editions of the Frontières International Co-Production Market at the Fantasia International Film Festival, the market is now expanding its physical reach to Europe, to hold its third edition at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, from April 10 to 12, 2014. Frontières is the first and only co-production market to connect North America with Europe in an environment focused specifically on genre film production.

12 projects from European countries, Canada and the USA will be selected to be presented within Frontières this upcoming April in Brussels, to meet with producers, financiers, sales agents, distributors and production services entities looking to attach themselves to film projects in development.

To apply to Frontières, projects must be market premieres with a completed script (or treatment in some cases), and must be applicable to an international co-production environment majorly using European, American and/or Canadian shooting locations and production teams. The market is open to both seasoned filmmakers and directors proposing their first feature film project. Projects may be submitted by the main operating producer or by the director.

Submission details may be found at frontieresmarket.com. The selected projects will be announced in early February 2014. Accreditations and invitations will begin in January.

Donate to the EAVE Alan Fountain International Scholarship Fund

A scholarship has been set up to honour the memory of Alan Fountain, former Head of Studies and President of EAVE, who passed away in 2016. Its goal is to enable one producer from outside the EU to participate in all three sessions of the EAVE Producers Workshop each year.
