PUENTES: EAVE EUROPE / LATIN AMERICA PRODUCERS WORKSHOP 2013

Extended Deadline: June 5, 2013!

Continuing the great success of the PUENTES workshops for European and Latin American producers, we are delighted to announce the fifth edition of PUENTES, connecting professionals from Europe & Latin America.

PUENTES is targeted at Latin  American & European producers with projects, bringing them together with potential financiers, distributors, sales agents, and reinforcing artistic and industrial cooperation between Europe & Latin America.  

The workshop modules bring together 5  European & 5  Latin American producers with their feature projects in development for 2 workshops in Locarno, Switzerland (August  8-­14, 2013) in partnership with the Locarno International Film Festival and its Industry Days, and in Montevideo, Uruguay (November 29-­December 4, 2013) in cooperation with Mutante Cine. Thanks to our partnership with VENTANA SUR (December 3-­6, 2013 in Buenos Aires, Argentina), free accreditations will be offered to the selected participants who want to attend the market after the second workshop.

PUENTES combines producetraining, project development, and networking. During the two workshops producers will work together with ‘state of the art’ experts from both continents on script development, co-­production between Latin America and Europe, financing in the two regions, legal aspects of co-­production, marketing, pitching and promotion, and meet with decision makers during both sessions.   

The workshop will enablfeature film producers from both continents to work together in two workshops and will offer the 10 selected participants:    

  • top level professional and project development,
  • work on the comprehensive development, production and distribution of European and Latin American projects,  
  • cooperation and co-­production on these and future projects,
  • networking between the participants and their companies to create medium and long term co-­financing and co-­production relationships,
  • access to a network of producers, financiers, markets, festivals, distributors and sales agents in both continents.

 

Target  group:    

Experienced feature film producers from Europe and Latin America wishing to work on an international scale and to create long term creative and business relationships between Europe and Latin America. Interested producers should apply with a feature film project in development stage. 

European producers applying must be able to demonstrate a clear involvement with Latin America and vice versa. In exceptional cases, we can also consider applications of producers without project. Applications with project will be given priority.

 

Project  criteria:    

  • feature-­length fiction film (for theatrical release)
  • projects suitable for an international co-­production and looking for co-­producers
  • preferably a minimum of 20% should be in place
  • projects suggested by European applicants should have a link to Latin America (thematic, cultural, technical) and the producer should be motivated to work with / in Latin America and vice versa
  • projects suggested by applicants should have a potential for co-­production
  • producers must have completed at least one film released theatrically in the last 3 years
  • 1st draft of the script must be available in English for the first workshop and at the latest by July 15, 2013.

  • 1-­2 page CV of the Producer and the Director
  • Brief description of the production company
  • A list of the company's productions: in development, pre-­production, production and of those released
  • 1 page Note of Intention of the Producer and 1 page Note of Intention of the Director concerning the development of your project
  • 1 page Synopsis
  • 8-­10 pages Treatment

 

Scripts are to be sent only on request, but should be ready for the first workshop by July 15.

All documents have to be sent in English – the working language of the workshop will be English.

 

Participation fee and conditions:    

Thanks to the support of MEDIA Mundus, the participation at Puentes is free of charge. Each participant will be offered accommodation during the workshop stay (hotel & part of the meals). We will also provide a limited number of partial travel scholarships.

The selection will be made by a selection committee and will be published early July, 2013. Selection interviews might be held via SKYPE.

- PUENTES 2011 project REY by Niles Atallah, producer: PUENTES 2011 graduate Lucie Kalmar is supported by Hubert Bals Fund Plus. REY received a Production Award in the Framework program of the Torino Film Lab in November 2012. The project also participated in the CPH:FORUM in Copenhagen and the rivieraLAB at the Riviera Maya Film Festival in Mexico. REY is supported by the Hubert Bals Fund, Amiens Screenplay Development Support, the Torino Film Lab, the Binger FilmLab, the Australab Award, and the Chilean Corfo development grant.

- TIES THAT BIND 2011 project FLAPPING IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE by Diep Nguyen Hoang, producer: TIES THAT BIND 2011 graduate David Lindner has been funded with the highest sum ever granted by the Norwegian SØRFOND. Together with the funding by CNC Aide aux cinemas du monde. FLAPPING IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE has now a solid financial basis for the shooting. The first images of the shooting can be expected in about two months.

- THE FOX by Matthias Luthardt, producers: EAVE 1998 graduate Oliver Damian of 27 Films Production and Kasia Skibinska of Braidmade Films Krakow. The film is based on David H. Lawrence’s novel of the same name. Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Mitteldeutsche Medienfoerderung and the Polish Film Institute are supporting the project.

- THE CUT by Fatih Akin, is co-produced by EAVE 2012 graduate Lukasz Dzieciol’s Opus Film. THE CUT is about evil personified in the figure of the devil with Tahar Rahim in the leading role. Poland will provide crew members, and the first sets are currently being  drafted by Oscar winning Polish set designer Allan Starski. The film is produced by Corazon International and Pandora Film, which has secured 1 M EUR of financing from the Film Förderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein and 250,000 EUR from the German Ministry of Culture.

- CATHEDRALS, executive producer: Wim Wenders is in development. The international series in both 3D and 2D about the souls of buildings is produced by EAVE 2010 graduate Gian-Piero Ringel and EAVE 2011 graduate Erwin M. Schmidt. EAVE 2011 graduate Anne Köhncke, EAVE 2010 graduate Signe Byrge Sørensen, Interchange 2011 graduate Charlotte Uzu are co-producers. The six episodes are shot by internationally acclaimed filmmakers, including Robert Redford, Michael Madsen, Michael Glawogger, Karim Ainouz, Wim Wenders, and James Marsh. Each one of them will portray an outstanding building and explore its greater social context. The series has received financial backing from Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, the Media TV Broadcasting Support, and rbb/Arte. The project will premiere in spring 2014 and is produced by Neue Road Movies, co-produced by rbb (Rundfunk Berlin- Brandenburg) in collaboration with Arte, co-produced by WOWOW (Tokyo), Final Cut for Real (Copenhagen), Les Films d’Ici 2 (Paris) and Lotus Film (Vienna), in association with Sundance Productions (New York) and @radical.media (New York).

- BIG GAME by Jalmari Helander, co-producer: EAVE 1995 graduate Jens Meurer is in pre-production. The action adventure is about a shy 13-year-old Finnish boy who has to spend the night in a local forest to prove his manhood; but when Air Force One is shot down by terrorists and the boy meets the US president, they fight to save themselves. Production companies are Altitude Film Entertainment, Egoli Tossell Film and Subzero Film Entertainment. Shooting on locations in Finland and Germany is planned for late summer.

- THE AMAZING MR JONES by Michael Caton-Jones, producer: EAVE 1995 graduate Jens Meurer is in development. Set in London, it tells the story of a beautiful woman, married to a wealthy politician, who places an advert seeking a lover who can give her the orgasm she has yet to experience. When she meets a younger man, a passionate but complicated affair begins. uMedia will handle international rights and will produce alongside Lauri Apelian’s Ocean Sky Entertainment and Jens Meurer of Egoli Tossell.

- THE LOBSTER by Yorgos Lanthimos, producer: EAVE 1991 graduate Ed Guiney is in development. Director Lanthimos wrote the love story, set in a dystopian future where single people are given strict conditions for finding mates, with regular co-writer Efthimis Filippou. Element Pictures, Faliro House, Haut Et Court, Limp and Scarlet Films are the production companies. Shooting in Ireland will start in autumn.

- LOUDER THAN BOMBS by Joachim Trier, producer: EAVE 1995 graduate Sigve Endresen, co-producer EAVE 1995 graduate Heino Deckert starts filming this autumn in the USA. The drama with Isabelle Huppert and Gabriel Byrne in the leading roles is co-produced by Bonafide Films, Ma.Ja.De Filmproduktion, Memento Films, Motlys AS and Nimbus Film. The family drama revolves around the character of a famous, late war photographer. On the eve of a retrospective of work, some three years after her untimely death, her husband and two sons discover an unsettling secret from her past. Support comes from Danish Film Institute, Nordic Film & Television Fund and Norwegian Film Institute.

- EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE by Wim Wenders, co-producers: EAVE 2010 graduate Gian-Piero Ringel and EAVE 2011 graduate Erwin M. Schmidt is in pre-production. James Franco and Sarah Polley are playing the main roles in a film about a  writer who accidentally kills a boy in a traffic accident and gets closer to the boy's mother and brother. Eurimages and German Federal Film Board (FFA) are supporting the film.

- JIMMY’S HALL by Ken Loach, co-producer: EAVE 1991 graduate Ed Guiney is in development. In 1921 Jimmy Gralton’s sin was to build a dancehall on a rural crossroads in Ireland where young people could come to learn, to argue, to dream… but above all to dance and have fun. The film is produced by Rebecca O’Brien and written by Paul Laverty. Partners of the Sixteen Films production include Why Not, Wild Bunch, Element Pictures and the Irish Film Board. The film is set to shoot in Ireland this summer.

- LA MARCHE by Nabil Ben Yadir, co-producer: EAVE 1994 graduate and group leader Diana Elbaum is in pre-production. Written by the director with Nadia Lakhdar and Ahmed Ahmidi, the screenplay is inspired by real events and is set back in 1983. Youth from the the outskirts of Lyon decide to stop hanging out and to do everything so as not to be considered as second class citizens. In the way of Gandhi, they have the idea of a great non-violent march for equality and against discrimination from Marseille to Paris. Produced by les Productions du Trésor, LA MARCHE is to be made on a €10.6m budget. Shooting is set to last from February to April, 2013. Set in 1983 and inspired by real events when youths from Lyon decided to march for equality and against discrimination from Marseille to Paris.

- BRAND NEW-U by Simon Pummell, producer: EAVE 2006 graduate Reinier Selen is in post-production. Shot in March in London and Dublin the story follows the 33-year-old Slater, who obsessively chases Nadia, the love of his life. When she suddenly disappears Slater wants to report her missing, but realises he knows nothing about her. The only clue he has is Brand New-U, a strange organisation that deals in new personalities. Besides support from the Netherlands Film Fund, the production is funded by the MEDIA Programme, the British Film Institute and the Irish Film Board.

- FRANK by Lenny Abrahamson, producer: EAVE 1991 graduate Ed Guiney is in post-production. The film is an offbeat comedy following an aspiring musician who joins a band led by the enigmatic Frank. Michael Fassbender — wearing a large plastic head — stars, alongside Domhnall Gleeson and Maggie Gyllenhaal. Written by Jon Ronson and Peter Straughan, the film was shot in Ireland and New Mexico. FRANK was produced by Element Pictures and Runaway Fridge, with backing from Film4, the BFI and the Irish Film Board.

- LIFE’S A BREEZE by Lance Daly, producer: EAVE 2004 graduate Macdara Kelleher and EAVE 2002 graduate Martin Persson is in post-production. From the director of KISSES, this comedy tells the story of a man who throws his mother’s mattress away only to realise she had stashed her life savings inside it. Starring Fionnula Flanagan and Pat Shortt, the film was produced by Fastnet Films and co-produced with Anagram Produktion in Sweden, where it was partly shot.

B’EST - Producers’ Workshop Baltic Bridge East by West: TWO WEEKS LEFT!

The Baltic Bridge East by West (B’EST) is an initiative to be held in 2013 by the organizers of the Baltic Event (Estonia), and RFilms and CTB Film Company (Russia) in cooperation with EAVE (European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs), and with the support from MEDIA Mundus

B’EST consists of two workshops, which will take place on September 11-15 in St. Petersburg within the framework of St. Petersburg International Film Festival and November 26-29 in Tallinn, within the framework of Baltic Event. The workshop will bring together 10 producers with feature film projects from the European Union (5 participants) and the CIS countries and Georgia (5 participants) and will offer the selected participants:

  • 5-day workshop-training, which includes plenaries on the script development process, financing in the Eastern and Western Europe, legal aspects of co-production, marketing strategies, as well as individual meetings with script, pitching and finance/marketing consultants 
  • meetings with decision-makers and potential co-production partners in St. Petersburg, Russia 
  • online sessions with the producers and tutors concerning the development of the scripts and the projects during the 2-month gap between the workshops 
  • 2-day follow-up session regarding the development of the projects and the final preparation for pitching at Baltic Event 
  • presentation of the projects at Baltic Event and meetings with potential financiers, co-producers, sales agents, and distributors 

Target group: 

  • experienced feature film producers wishing to work on an international scale and create long-term creative and business relationships between Western and Eastern Europe 
  • interested producers should apply with a feature film project in development stage 

Project criteria: 

  •  full-length feature film with potential for theatrical distribution 
  •  suitable for an international co-production and looking for co-producers 
  •  preferably national support in place 
  •  projects from the European Union and Russia, Belorussia, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldavia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are accepted 
  •  projects should have a link to the other region (thematic, cultural, technical) and the producer should be motivated to work with / in the other region 

Special conditions: 

  •  participation includes an accreditation fee of 200 Euros 
  •  once a project is selected, the producer should be present at both workshops 
  •  the programme covers travel and accommodation costs 
  •  finalized films must mention their participation at B’EST in the credits 
  •  all documents have to be sent in English – the working language of the workshop is English 
  •  submission of the project is considered as acceptance of special conditions

connecting cottbus: Save the date and submit your project now

Deadline:  15th July 2013

connecting cottbus, the East-West co-production market at the FilmFestival Cottbus, is currently accepting project submissions for its 2013 pitching session. Furthermore, producers, sales agents and other industry representatives interested in East-West projects are invited to participate without  projects. Experienced producers can apply with a fiction feature project that either originates from or is related to Eastern Europe and shows potential for an East-West co-production. 

connecting cottbus will be held in Cottbus on 7th and 8th November 2013. 13 selected projects will be presented to the industry audience. The Best Pitch Award of € 1,500 for the best pitch goes to the producer of the awarded project. A jury of three industry representatives will decide on the Post Pitch Award, an in-kind award donated by the German post-production company The Post Republic (value: approx. € 25,000).

Netherlands Production Platform

Call for applications! Deadline 1st July 2013

At the Netherlands Production Platform (NPP) approximately 20 Dutch and European feature films in development are introduced to a selected group of top international industry professionals from the production, finance, sales and distribution sectors. Feature films suitable for co-production and with local financial support in place, will be considered.

Selection includes travel and accommodation for 3 nights in Utrecht’s luxurious Karel V hotel, covering 2 delegates per project.

Call for projects for Les Arcs

The deadline for the call for projects has been set for September 27th.

The European Film Festival of Les Arcs (5th edition from December 14th to 21st, 2013) is launching a call for projects for its Coproduction Village (December 14th to 17th) and Work in Progress section.

On these three days, developers of the projects selected (animated, documentary or fiction feature films, undergoing development or in post-production, of European initiative and directed by a European) will be invited to Les Arcs, where they will meet with potential coproducers.

This year, the Festival Focus will be dedicated to ex-Yugoslavia countries (Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Macedonia).

Crossroads Co-production Forum: Call for entries 

All submissions must be received by July 31st, 2013

Celebrating its 9th edition, the CROSSROADS Co-production Forum is announcing its call for entries for its next event, which will take place during the 54th Thessaloniki International Film Festival in November 2013.

The event’s goal is to support the producers of feature-length fiction film projects from the the Mediterranean, Central and South-eastern Europe regions. Qualifying features should be produced or co-produced by a country in this area or contain story elements from the aforementioned regions. Mediterranean and European producers with a feature film script are given the chance to encounter a new network of financiers, co-producers and leading industry specialists.

Each year the Crossroads Jury gives an award to the best Crossroads film project:a co-production award with the Two Thirty Five company, providing complete image & sound post-production services. The producer of the winning project is also granted a Producer’s Network accreditation for the 2014 Cannes IFF. A second prize will be awarded by the Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée (CNC), worth 7000 euros cash.

Sofia Meetings will select a project that will participate in their next session in March 2014 and the MFI (Mediterranean Film Institute) is offering a scholarship to its Script 2 Film Workshop for one of the projects. Applications are open for The Pixel Market 2013! 

Part of the 7th Cross-Media Forum (15-18 October), The Pixel Market is the only finance market dedicated to getting cross-media projects off the ground.

We'll select 30 projects in total. The criteria are simple:

• Projects must be at an advanced stage of development

• Projects can be any genre, including hybrid

• Stories must use more than one platform - any platform - to engage audiences

Eight of the 30 teams will be chosen as finalists to present their project at The Pixel Pitch competition (16 Oct) in front of a public audience (watch this space for ticket availability). A panel of international experts (see last year's here) will choose the winner of ARTE's 6,000 € International Prize for The Pixel Pitch!

All teams take part in The Pixel Market meetings (17 Oct), a day of bespoke 1-2-1 business meetings with 100+ financiers.  But that's not all - other prizes for 2013 include:

The selected producers will be invited by the festival providing accreditation & accommodation during the event (4 nights).

In 2013 the OPEN DOORS section will focus on the regions of on South Caucasus (Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia). Around 10 projects will be selected and the directors and producers of the chosen projects will be present in Locarno and available for pre-scheduled one-to-one meetings.

EAVE Workshop for Palestinian Producers, Writer-Directors and Writers - Call for Applications

This is an EAVE Workshop, supported by the British Council and the Palestinian Ministry of Culture, aimed at Palestinian producers, writers and writer/directors. 

The Workshop will take place in Ramallah, September 2 – 6, 2013. 

EAVE (European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs) is a leading training, development and networking organization for producers, a partner in the Interchange Workshop and has previously been involved in workshops for producers and writers in Palestine. (For further information see www.eave.org).

The main concerns around which the workshop is built are project development (including script and comprehensive production development), co-production strategies, pitching & presentation.  The project-based training is designed to match the needs of professionals who want to develop their skills through concrete work on their projects - under the expert guidance of international tutors – and who are ready to share their ideas with colleagues and engage themselves in discussions in order to improve and increase their knowledge.

 

Who can apply?

* Teams of producer + writer/director applying with a fiction feature film project

* Writer or writer/director applying with a fiction feature film project

* Producer applying without a project 

All applicants should have a demonstrable track record of producing, writing or directing nationally, as well as, possibly, internationally. This should ideally include the production, writing or direction of fiction feature films and/or fiction shorts but can also include documentaries, music videos, and advertising. 

The project can be at treatment or script stage.

For producers applying without a project this Workshop offers the opportunity to improve your knowledge and some of the necessary skills for beginning to work internationally. 

This Workshop is open to Palestinians only.  

The working language is English; thus, a good knowledge of English is essential in order to participate.

There is no participation fee.  Accomodation in Ramallah and meals will be provided.

  •  if possible - one previous short film or extract of previous materials to be uploaded to Vimeo.

Donate to the EAVE Alan Fountain International Scholarship Fund

A scholarship has been set up to honour the memory of Alan Fountain, former Head of Studies and President of EAVE, who passed away in 2016. Its goal is to enable one producer from outside the EU to participate in all three sessions of the EAVE Producers Workshop each year.
