From Producers to Producers at the Locarno Film Festival
From Producers to Producers
An annual invitation by the Swiss producers for a peer to peer exchange of experiences with European producers at the Locarno Film Festival
How can a creative producer build a sustainable independent business
This producers’ meeting is divided into two parts — a thematic debate (1.5 hours) and a reception to encourage contacts between professionals (1.5 hours).
Based on the testimonies of experienced European producers, the discussion will focus on the key factors to consider when designing a business plan and developing a slate of projects. This exchange will give all producers attending the event the opportunity to question their mid-term company development strategy. The questions dealt with will include What are my objectives for the next five years? With which projects and stories? Which directors will be involved? What are my expectations in terms of business prospects and financial consequences for my company?
After the debate, the participating producers will be invited to continue the discussions in a more relaxed atmosphere (terrace and cocktail), pitch their projects and/or make new contacts with producers as well as with representatives of the European professional training organizations taking part in this event.
Monday 6 August 2012, from 15.00 to 18.00, at the Hotel Belvedere in Locarno. Welcome from 14.30
Registration deadline: 27 July 2012. The event is free of charge but prior registration with FOCAL is compulsory at: www.focal.ch/FPtP_ch

After the award-winning and internationally acclaimed documentary features HAVANNA, MI AMOR (2000), MARRY ME (2003), COMRADES IN DREAMS (2006) and PINK TAXI (2009), his latest project is just about to be finished. The budget for music rights was exceeded and 25,000 Dollars are to be raised within 30 days via Kickstarter, in order to make the film happen. The elderly gentlemen seen in the film greatly enjoyed improvising American big band classics and humming Elvis tunes. These scenes are often beautiful and touching and the filmmakers would love to keep these shots in the film. This will only be possible if the full music rights can be acquired. If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to contact them.

Call for applications: EAVE 2013 European Producers Workshop
Deadline October 1, 2012
EAVE, European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs, is one of the leading training and development providers for producers in Europe, renowned for its European Producers Workshop.
Who is it for?
EAVE is aimed at producers, both fiction and documentary, who are already working in the film and television industries, who wish to begin to operate on a European wide basis by increasing their knowledge of producing and co-producing in Europe and by building up a pan European professional network. We also welcome applications from associated branches of the industry - e.g. commissioning, funding, legal and finance, festivals & markets, media administration. Each year fifty participants are selected from most of the EU countries and beyond and take part in three one-week long workshops.
How does it work?
Half the participants attend the course with projects and it is an excellent means of development through intense focus on the project with colleagues and experts throughout the year. Most participants attending with a project also bring their writer for the first two weeks which enables producer and writer to benefit together from one-to-one sessions with script experts.
During the first two workshops, in March and June, participants work within groups led by experienced producers and with several experts on script analysis, development and production financing, legal aspects of co-production, marketing, pitching, packaging and more. In the third week in October/November, 40-50 Decision Makers (commissioning editors, national and regional media funds, sales agents, etc.) join the participants to discuss the projects, companies and careers of the participants, a process which offers unusual access to Europe's Decision Makers.
EAVE graduates join a unique network of active European producers which forms one of the backbones of the industry. Furthermore, EAVE participants and members benefit from our partnerships with the leading European film festivals and markets where EAVE facilitates graduate participation.
Timeline
The interviews with all candidates will take place in autumn 2012 and the selection will be announced in December 2012. The 3 workshops take place during March 11 - 18 in Luxembourg (LU), June 12 - 19 in Turku (FI) and October/November (tbc) in Vienna (AT) 2013.

Postgraduate Opportunities – Develop your voice as an independent producer further with an Online Raindance Masters course
Would you like to study filmmaking on your own terms? The Raindance Postgraduate Film Degree allows producers to achieve a Staffordshire University Masters degree (subject to validation) in a film-related field of their own choosing, in a structure they personally negotiate with their tutors and industry collaborators on a part-time or full-time basis. Our 20 years of experience in training supported film makers like directors Christopher Nolan (Inception), Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead), Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes) and writer Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey). Some of our current Masters students are now making their first films, have gone on to better jobs than when they first started with help from the Degree, or are about to close multi-million financing deals - depending on their interest.
The programme can build on your past and present work at EAVE and includes additional online training courses from the Raindance Course Calendar, networking with industry and self-directed study. The learning activities and themes depend on the evolving student career and project aims and could lead to an M.Sc. testing various avenues to Crowd Funding, an M.A. Film Financing Case Study or looking at Marketing Comedy Webisodes, to support later professional development in teaching or management. Your final project could be a thesis, production package including budget and schedule, or a finished feature film.
Please contact us on carl@raindance.co.uk to check if you meet entry requirements, and if you would like to arrange a taster tutorial through Skype.

3D Film Mart 2012 Call for Projects
Submission deadline: August 31
The European Summit for Stereoscopic 3D for Science, Technology, and Digital Art, called 3D Stereo MEDIA, comprises a co-production 3D film market – which is the object of the present call – and a 3D film festival, as well as a scientific conference, a professional conference, and a 3D academy, all dedicated to stereoscopic 3D (S-3D) and more. For more information about 3D Stereo MEDIA, please visit at www.3dstereomedia.eu.
Producers of 2D and S-3D movies are invited to submit S-3D movie projects to the first co-production market for S-3D movies in Europe and beyond, called the “3D Film Mart (3DFM)”, to be held in Liège, Belgium, on 4-5 December 2012, during 3D Stereo MEDIA.
In 2011, over 60 projects were submitted, for a total budget of about € 250,000,000. 3D Stereo MEDIA has formed partnerships with the technology cluster TWIST and the creative industries consultancy peacefulfish, and has received funding support from the MEDIA Programme of the European Commission, to create a co-production market dedicated to S-3D movie projects (live action, documentary, animation, alternative content, etc.) that are at the development stage, but already have at least 20% of their financing secured.
Producers of 2D movies interested in the possibility of producing their next project in S-3D, as well as producers who already have a track record in S-3D, are encouraged to submit projects. 3DFM thus functions not only as a project market but also as a forum for discussion and education about producing and distributing S-3D content.
A jury will select about 20 projects among those submitted. As a result of the sponsoring by the EU, about 90% of the selected projects will be from producers based in Europe. During 3D Stereo MEDIA, the producers of the selected projects will pitch their project to a Pitch Panel including investors, financiers, sales agents, and (co-)producers.Besides the pitch sessions, the market features other business tools such as:
• Networking events over the two days of the market for producers to meet investors, financiers, sales agents, (co-)producers, distributors, and other key players in co-production and S-3D. The networking evening of 4 Dec is specifically dedicated to 3DFM attendees.
• Preorganized one-to-one meetings, which will provide the producers of the selected projects with access to Belgium-based S-3D post-production houses as well as to Belgian film funds specialized in Belgium’s tax shelter system.
The producer of the best project will receive, at the overall Awards Ceremony of 3D Stereo MEDIA of 6 Dec evening, the Best Project Award and a € 3,000 (three thousand Euros) cash award. If the winning producer is not personally present at this ceremony, he/she loses any right to this cash award. The selected producers are required to attend 3D Film Mart from its opening on 4 Dec at 11am until its closing on 5 Dec at6pm.
The selected producers must cover their own travel and accommodation costs. However, small travel stipends are available. To apply, please provide a one-page justification letter as part of your submission. There is no fee for submitting a project.
All the information for submitting a project, including the regulations, Call for Projects, and submission form, is available at www.3dstereomedia.eu/filmmart. The submission form and all required elements must arrive at the Secretariat of the Film Mart no later than 31 August 2012. The regulations should answer most of the questions you might have. However, do not hesitate to contact our Secretariat: market@3dstereomedia.eu

Les Arcs European Film Festival Co-production Village
Applications are open until September 21
In only three years, the Les Arcs European Film Festival has acquired incontestable notoriety and become sought after for the quality of its programming, its conviviality, and its effective Co-production Village. The festival has just launched a call for applications for its European co-production market and Work in Progress event to be held at its fourth edition from December 15 to 22 this year.
For three days, selected participants representing their film projects (fiction features, animation features, or feature-length documentaries, in development or post-production, that are European initiatives and directed by a European) will be invited to Les Arcs to meet potential co-producers (including EAVE - European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs members), distributors (including some from Europa Distribution and the French network DIRE), representatives from regional funds (Rhône-Alpes Cinéma and other partners of the European network Cine Regio), international sales agents, and representatives from the financial sector. Projects that already have a European region’s support and projects that have already gathered 25% of funding will be at an advantage.
The Co-production Village 2012 will also repeat the Works in Progress screenings launched last year (read more). Frédéric Boyer (artistic director for the Les Arcs Film Festival as well as the Tribeca Film Festival) will animate the session to allow film professionals to discover a selection of nine films in post-production looking for extra funding, distributors, and international sales agents.
The co-production market’s programme will also include debates and case studies on European film production and distribution, with a focus on Belgium this year.
Applications for the Co-production Village are open until September 21 on the festival’s website: http://www.lesarcs-filmfest.com
