EAVE June News 2020

EAVE interview & EAVE masterclass @ Shoot the Book! with producer Ed Guiney

Ed Guiney, Element Pictures, producer of Yorgos Lanthimos’ THE FAVOURITE and Lenny Abrahamson’s ROOM on the production of the TV series NORMAL PEOPLE, based on the acclaimed novel by Sally Rooney and directed by Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie Macdonald.

- You are known as very successful producer of rather unusual films for the big screen. Why did you want to adapt Sally Rooney’s novel for TV?

Because its an incredible novel and I thought it would make a brilliant TV series – very simple really!

- The protagonists in ROOM and FRANK are everything but „normal people“. So why did you say that Lenny Abrahamson and Sally Rooney’s novel were „meant for each other“?

As a writer Sally writes characters with such clarity and depth that they cease to be characters in a novel and become living breathing people who you believe exist in your orbit. Lenny has a similar gift as a film-maker. He can remove the lens between the audience and the characters on screen and in such a way that you feel that they cease to be fictional characters but become real people with whom you believe you have an intimate connection.

- What makes the novel interesting for you?

As above, its incredible honesty and its ability to create such rich characters with whom one empathises so deeply.

- Why did you choose to produce 12 episodes of half an hour length instead of six one-hour episodes?

It’s a character centric piece rather than a plot driven piece so we felt this would work best in shorter 30 min episodes or chapters. It felt like there would be too much pressure on plot if we made them hour long episodes.

- Does your approach to the work as a producer for a TV series differ from your work as film producer?

Not really to be honest – its all about supporting the work of outstanding creators who have something unique to say.

Watch here the EAVE Masterclass organised in partnership with Shoot the Book! at Marche du Film 2020 with Ed Guiney about the adaptation of the novel „Normal People“ by Sally Rooney to TV series. Moderated by Ben Croll (Variety).

New film project by Olmo Omerzu now in post-production

The as yet unnamed new film project by Olmo Omerzu, producer: EAVE graduate Jiri Konecny is in post-production. Olmo Omerzu was in the midst of shooting his latest feature-length film when it was interrupted by the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. Principal photography on his new outing was halted 20 days into shooting. Omerzu then resorted to going into the editing room to work on the shot footage. The film crew returned to the set to shoot the remaining ten days’ worth of material, wrapping on 14 June. The story follows the ageing patriarch and owner of a family company, an electronics factory, who sacrificed his whole life for the firm. He finds out that his long-time accountant stole huge sums of money, and she became a victim of an online scam. This situation has a severe impact on the protagonist, his whole family and the future of the company. The film is being produced by Jiri Konecny of endorfilm, and co-produced by Slovakian outfit Punkchart Film, Slovenia’s Cvinger Film, France's Melocoton Films and Czech Television. The Czech Film Fund, the Slovenian Film Centre, RTV Slovenia and the Slovak Audiovisual Fund have supported the project.

MIA MISSES HER REVENGE by Bogdan Theodor Olteanu, producer: EAVE graduate Anamaria Antoci is in post-production.   THE CONFERENCE by Ivan I. Tverdovskiy, co-producer: EAVE on Demand graduate Diana Mikita is in post-production. At the core of THE CONFERENCE is the tragic terrorist siege which took place in the Dubrovka Theatre in 2002. The attack involved 850 hostages and ended with the deaths of at least 170 people. Tverdovskiy’s film looks at the horrific tragedy through the eyes of the protagonist Natasha, a survivor who returns to the crime scene to confront her survivor’s guilt. Nafta Films is handling postproduction, currently underway. The project has been funded by the Estonian Film Institute, the Cultural Endowment, and Eurimages.

SAVING ONE WHO WAS DEAD by Vaclav Kadrnka, producer: EAVE graduate Katarina Krnacova is in post-production. The film tells the story of a family left in a terminal life situation after the father falls into a coma. The mother and son silently concentrate all their powers. They meekly accept the diagnosis but resist the verdict. Yet they reject an open conflict because the life thread is so taut that conflict could inadvertently break it.The film is produced by Vaclav Kadrnka’s Czech company Sirius Films in co-production with the Slovak company Silverart and the Czech Television. The film received support from the Czech Film Fund, the Slovak Audiovisual Fund and Eurimages.

LEBENSDORF by Valentin Hotea, producer: EAVE graduate and Romanian National coordinator Ada Solomon is in post-production. The film is being staged by HiFilm Productions and co-produced by Romanian outfits Chainsaw Europe Studio, Abis Studio, Production XMG Media and Scharf Film Production. The screenplay follows Ducu Dobrescu, a 45-year-old writer who leaves Bucharest to be part of a creative residency in Berlin. Ducu swings between two countries and two women: Andra, his hot-tempered wife, who wants a divorce, and Giulia, Ducu’s old flame from his youth, who lives in Lebensdorf, an ecovillage in Germany. Several events and misadventures help Ducu decide on how he wants to move on. The film's budget is coming from the Romanian National Film Center. The project also received support from the European Union’s Creative Europe MEDIA programme and Romanian National Television. LEBENSDORF was shot over six weeks in the summer and autumn of 2019, in Bucharest, Berlin and the Sieben Linden ecovillage in Germany.

Call for Applications: EAVE Producers Workshop 2021

EAVE, European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs, is one of the leading training and development providers for producers in Europe, renowned for its EAVE Producers Workshop.

  Who is it for?

EAVE is aimed at producers, both fiction, documentary and TV series, who are already working in the film and television industries who wish to expand their operation internationally by increasing their knowledge of producing and co-producing in Europe and by building up a pan European professional network. We also welcome applications from associated branches of the industry – e.g. commissioning, funding, legal and finance, festivals & markets, media administration. Each year fifty participants are selected from most of the EU countries and beyond and take part in three one-week long workshops.

  How does it work?

Half the participants attend the course with projects and it is an excellent means of development through intense focus on the project with colleagues and experts throughout the year. The other half come to EAVE in order to focus on developing their companies or careers. Most participants attending with a project also bring their writer for the first two weeks which enables producer and writer to benefit together from one-to-one sessions with script experts.

During the first two workshops, participants work within groups led by experienced producers and with several experts on script analysis, development and production financing, legal aspects of co-production, marketing, pitching, packaging and more. In the third workshop 60-70 Decision Makers (commissioning editors, national and regional media funds, sales agents, etc.) join the participants to discuss the projects, companies and careers of the participants, a process which offers unusual access to Europe's Decision Makers.

EAVE graduates join a unique network of active European producers which forms one of the backbones of the industry. Furthermore, EAVE participants and members benefit from our partnerships with the leading European film festivals and markets where EAVE facilitates graduate participation.

The interviews with a pre-selection of candidates will take place in autumn 2020 and the selection will be announced in December 2020. The 3 workshops take place in March 5-12, 2021 in Luxembourg (LU), June 2021 in Orléans (FR - TBC), and October 2021 in Catalonia (ES - TBC).
EAVE is a residential workshop programme with a strong focus on network building. Should local travel restrictions occur, alternative digital solutions will be proposed.

Check out the EAVE website for more information and the application form or contact us!

Call for applications: EAVE Marketing Workshop 2020

EAVE offers a tailor-made workshop embracing the importance of marketing techniques and Audience-centered strategies. Co-Heads of Studies Alya Belgaroui-Degalet and Sarah Calderón have designed a unique programme where participants are collectively working on the group’s projects more than half of the time. Inspired by the EAVE sharing pedagogy, Design Thinking techniques and visual, tangible and ludic exercises, the sessions are equally creative, innovative and strategic. The result is a hands-on approach with concrete tools that anyone can apply immediately within their own team in today’s and tomorrow’s industry. This casual way of learning facilitates network and community building across countries from all over the world.

An importance place for digital marketing

Now, more than ever, digital strategies are gaining importance in the audiovisual market. Although digital, innovation and new windows have always been crucial at this workshop, in 2020 we are taking it a step further: we will involve more digital-oriented sessions, more online and hybrid case studies and a handful of forward-thinking social media examples that are linked to the new digital era. Through our EAVE IMPACT Programme, we also consider inviting some participants online to selected sessions.

The 30 carefully selected participants will have a full overview of the actual marketing trades in terms of targeting and positioning from international sales strategies to national release and also generating awareness all across the release process including festivals.

“The EAVE Marketing Workshop has been for me a unique opportunity to work on new marketing techniques together with a group of experts tutors and established colleagues, in an open and collaborative environment where everyone was keen to share experiences in order to improve together in the business.”

Gaetano Maiorino, True Colours Glorious Films, Italy

Participants can apply with or without a project at any stage of production to work with cutting-edge marketing specialists, such as Alya Belgaroui-Degalet (Wild Bunch – international sales marketing) and Sarah Calderon (The Film Agency – marketing consultant) as Heads of Studies and contributors like Michael Arnon (Wolf Consultants – PR), Boris Pugnet (former Head of Marketing at Le Pacte / Editor at Turn Right), Sally Hodgson (PIPOCA, UK), Wendy Mitchell (Screen International, UK) and others to come. These cherry-picked experts go beyond their own field of marketing and get involved in other experts sessions sharing their complementary experience

“The workshop was great in bringing together people from all over the film industry and we've learnt a great deal about what film marketing actually means during each step of a film's life: From production to sales and distribution and finally the audience.”

Meret Ruggle, Trigon Films, Switzerland

The workshop is targeted at producers as well as professionals working in sales, distribution and marketing departments.  We also welcome applications from related areas of the industry (e.g. regional and national funding institutions, film festivals and markets etc.) and from relevant trainers and consultants who want to innovate in their marketing techniques. The two groups that will be working during the entire workshop are balanced in terms of all the above-mentioned trades of the film industry in order to nourish as much as possible the different perspectives.

The EAVE Marketing Workshop participants are joined every year by graduates of the renowned EAVE Producers Workshop, who have trained over one year as specialized marketing professionals.

EAVE is also proud to announce ongoing steady partnerships. We will select participants from Warsaw Kids Film Forum, M:brane, Thessaloniki Crossroads and LA INCUBADORA. Members of CICAE, Europa International, Europa Distribution and EuroVOD as well as EAVE graduates will benefit of special discounts.

The workshop will take place in Luxembourg in partnership with Film Fund Luxembourg.

Application deadline: August 10, 2020

Co-production in a post-pandemic world

The sanitary crisis has shaken up the independent cinema industry. Whereas the wish to return to ‘business as usual’ is strong in all players, our societies have transformed and we have to define the parameters for a ‘new future normal’.

What are the opportunities coming out of the crisis? How can independent producers find new ways of collaborating on an international level? How can we support diversity in cinema? How can training programmes change and adapt the proven, collective know-how of an industry which does not know structured innovation, research and development? And how can film markets support the transformation of the industry?

Leading independent producers from Russia and Europe will explore pathways for a possible future of independent (co-)production in a panel discussion moderated by Erwin M. Schmidt.

Speakers: Didar Domehri (Maneki Films - FULL HOUSE), Natalia Drozd (CTB Film Company, Titus Kreyenberg (unafilm), Riina Sildos (Amrion), Artem Vassiliev (Metrafilms)
