Going on to Berlin for two days, travelling for one day to Munich, crossing the Alps to shoot in Monaco. From there the team travelled via Milan to Venice for one day.All in all we had to organize a shooting in eight different cities, in five European countries in 14 shooting days including five travel days. “To shoot in so many locations, and to organize everything on a low-budget-level in such a short time (we ourselves had to get permissions, locations, for the three German locations as well as equipment and crew for the entire shooting) we needed help – but thanks to the EAVE-built network, I was able to work together with other participants from the 2006 workshop,” says Matthias Krause. He could count on the support of EAVE 2006 graduates Anne Beresford from MJW productions, Antonin Dedet from Neon productions and Franco Bocca Gelsi. Film Training and Education in Africa: Challenges and Opportunities

Thursday 3rd March 2011, Imagine Institute, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

Practice-oriented film training is changing all around the world, as a result, among other things, of new technologies and globalisation. This symposium would explore the implications of such changes for Africa by bringing together people who are actively involved in creating opportunities to increase filmmaking capacity on the African continent and beyond. In addition to trying to understand the challenges that are involved in these capacity-building endeavors, we will explore the values and aspirations that are driving specific initiatives. A further goal would be to identify the models that are especially constructive and the conditions that help them to succeed.

10am – 4pm, Thursday 3rd March 2011, Imagine Insitute, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

MEDIA in danger!

Dear colleagues and fellow professionals,

As most of you might have heard, the future existence of the MEDIA programme from 2014 onwards is under serious threat.

We believe that in the past 20 years the MEDIA programme has decisively contributed to strengthening the European industry through the support of development, training, markets/festivals and distribution including the creation of genuine networks of European producers who have developed and produced co-productions which have won numerous top awards and been widely distributed. These networks, of which EAVE is one good example, have become the backbone of the European industry. Abolishing or cutting the budget for this programme or merging it within another programme would be a fatal blow for the European film industry. In addition the loss of MEDIA Mundus, a relatively new programme which enables completely new global cultural and economic relationships to be built, would mean the end of an imaginative and forward looking initiative at its exciting and timely birth.

The support of European film professionals and industry is needed more than ever to express how vital the MEDIA programme is for our industry.

Sign the petition!

The French association ARP, further to a discussion with the CNC of the various European countries, decided to make apetition of European filmmakers and professionals. The text is joined here.

They have already received the support of many great names of the European cinema, the support of many filmmakers and professionals and invite you to sign the petition:

http://www.larp.fr/home/?p=2257

In the name of the European organizations and networks, acommon letter has been sent to Mr Jose Manuel Barroso at the European Commission. Find the text for further information here.

Come to the Public Hearing!

On March 18, 2011, a public hearing will be organized in Brussels. The event will be organised by MEDIA to discuss future needs/plans. There will be invited speakers from different media disciplines followed by a 'public discussion'. It is crucial that many European film professionals attend the event in order to take the opportunity to express doubts/worries/need for clarification regarding the future of MEDIA. Please try to attend if you can possibly make the time. A small crowd will make a fatally wrong signal to the European Commission. For details and registration see the MEDIA website: http://ec.europa.eu/culture/media/programme/overview/news/publichearing_en.htm

Thanks for your precious support.

With best wishes,

EAVE

REMINDER: Film Finance Forum 2011 – apply now!

Deadline for applications: February 24, 2011

EAVE Film Finance Forum 2011 takes place during March 31 – April 3 in Luxembourg. It is an intensive four day workshop for European and international professionals on European film finance.

The EAVE Film Finance Forum provides an exploration and update of the latest financial developments and funding sources in Europe. It includes sessions on public and private finance, co-production, tax incentives, the sales and distribution market, banking services and new industry trends. Since most films produced in Europe are made with low to medium budgets, the Finance Forum will focus on its participants’ real financial situation and provide them with solutions adapted to their needs and projects.

How does it work?

The workshop takes the form of an inclusive round table with presentations on various up-to-date topics followed by open discussion with the participants and leading industry experts from the finance and film businesses. In order to achieve a maximum level of interactivity the total number of participants is limited. This enables an approach focused on a small group and the specific needs of each participant as well as facilitating networking between participants and experts.

Leading European experts

The Film Finance Forum’s team is composed of leading experts (subject to change). The 2010 edition included: Christian Kmiotek (Head of Studies, Film Finance Forum & CFO, Samsa Film), Stéphane Cordier (Cofiloisirs), Joëlle Levie (independent finance expert), Chris Paton (Fortissimo Films), Katrine Schlüter-Schierbeck (Johan Schlüter advokatfirma), Bernhard Stampfer (Vice-President, Deutsche Bank), Jani Thiltges (Samsa Film) and Max Wiedemann (Wiedemann & Berg Film).

Who can apply?

The Film Finance Forum is targeted to producers and associated film industry professionals, members of the financial and legal communities, policy makers, and consultants. It is also open to non-EU applicants, thanks to the support of MEDIA Mundus.

The selection of the candidates is based on the application file submitted by each applicant according to the form provided. EAVE evaluates the quality of the candidate’s company, his/her and the company’s track record and the level of professional background of the candidate(s). Priority is given to applicants working within independent and/or small and medium sized companies.

Further information

For futher information about applying, participation fees, scholarships and more, please visit www.eave.org or contact EAVE workshop manager Satu Elo:  satu@eave.org

EAVE & Sofia Meetings

Dear EAVE producers,

For those of you who wish to attend Sofia Meetings, please don't miss the deadline: February 10, 2011!!

EAVE is delighted to be partner of the 8th Sofia Meetings, taking place from March 10-13, 2011 within the framework of the Sofia International Film Festival.

Sofia Meetings has two separate modules:
- Second Films Pitching presentation of European feature film projects looking for financial support and realization;
- Balkan Films Showcase screenings of the latest Bulgarian and Balkan films for directors and programmers from different international festivals.

The aim of Sofia Meetings is to promote new projects of young European filmmakers and new films from Bulgaria and the Balkan region to European film festivals and distributors.

Thanks to our partnership with Sofia Meetings, we are able to offer 6 EAVE producers privileged access in order to meet regional filmmakers and their projects.

The selected 6 EAVE producers will be invited by the festival (accommodation and accreditation).
In addition, 3 EAVE 2010 projects will be presented at the Second Films Pitching.

If you are interested, please send a short CV, company profile and motivation statement to tina@eave.org before February 10, 2011.

Donate to the EAVE Alan Fountain International Scholarship Fund

A scholarship has been set up to honour the memory of Alan Fountain, former Head of Studies and President of EAVE, who passed away on March 3. Its goal is to enable one producer from outside the EU to participate in all three sessions of the EAVE Producers Workshop each year.
